Abstract

Bias instability is one of the most critical factors in the performance of spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) co-magnetometers. Previous studies on SERF co-magnetometers have shown that changes in the atomic ensemble temperature can lead to variations in the alkali metal atom density, which in turn affect the optical rotation angle and light shift, ultimately influencing the system’s stability. Building on this understanding, this paper introduces the thermoelectric analogy method for the first time in the transient heat transfer analysis of SERF co-magnetometer atomic ensembles. Using this method, the primary factors affecting the atomic ensemble temperature in a SERF co-magnetometer were analyzed, and transient heat transfer models were established for the following processes: the interaction between the non-magnetic electric heating system and the atomic ensemble temperature, laser heating of the atomic ensemble by the optical system, and the effect of environmental temperature changes on the non-magnetic electric heating system. These models were experimentally validated through active temperature variation experiments. The experimental results show that the proposed transient heat transfer models accurately describe the related heat transfer processes of the atomic ensemble, with model fitting accuracy exceeding 98%. This lays a solid foundation for the high-precision closed-loop control of the atomic ensemble temperature in SERF co-magnetometers and provides valuable insights for the structural design and engineering applications of SERF co-magnetometers.

Suppression of thermal coupling noise in the SERF atomic co-magnetometer

Jiasen Ruan, Lihong Duan, Yang Fu +4 more

Heating the alkali metal vapor cell to obtain high atomic density is a prerequisite for realizing the high-precision measurement for spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) co-magnetometer. However, the thermo-magnetic and thermo-optical coupling noise caused by the temperature diffusion from the alkali vapor cell is one of the main factors restricting the co-magnetometer performance at present. Here the influence of heating on the SERF co-magnetometer was comprehensively studied, and the thermal error model of the system was established. A novel heat insulation structure for the co-magnetometer was designed, and the effectiveness was verified through monitoring of characteristic temperature points. Compared to the conventional oven support, the average maximum temperature difference within 12 h of the optical path and magnetic shielding systems (OPMSS) decreased by 52%, the bias instability of the co-magnetometer decreased by 24%, and the noise of the co-magnetometer at 1 Hz decreased by 33%. The experimental results demonstrate that this method reduces the temperature fluctuation of the OPMSS, effectively suppresses the thermal coupling noise, and thus improves the performance of the SERF co-magnetometer. Moreover, this method is also applicable to other quantum sensors based on alkali metal vapor cell.

Circular Dichroism Analysis and Ellipticity Measurement in SERF Atom Ensemble

Haoran Lv, Bozheng Xing, Xiujie Fang +2 more

In the research of the interaction between light and atoms, ellipticity is an important characterization of the pump and absorption rates. In previous researches, it was generally believed that ellipticity only originated from the interaction between magnetic fields and polarized alkali metal atomic ensembles. In this article, we derive and analyze the circular dichroism based on density matrix and Maxwell equations during the interaction between magnetic fields, probe light, and alkali metal atomic ensembles in spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) regime. We construct an optical path for measuring ellipticity based on photo elastic modulator (PEM) to measure ellipticity. Under different experimental conditions, we compare the measurement results of ellipticity from circular dichroism effect and rotation angle from circular birefringence effect. The results indicates that the interaction between magnetic field and alkali metal atomic ensemble which is polarized by probe light is a new source of ellipticity. Then, we research the ratio of rotation angle to ellipticity, and the results indicates that ellipticity generated by the interaction between the magnetic field and the alkali metal atomic ensemble is an intrinsic characteristic, which is independent of external conditions. The confidence level of the fitting between the experimental results and the theoretical equation is 99.7%. This research can be applied to SERF magnetometers and co-magnetometers.

Decoupling and suppression of opto-thermal drifts in SERF atomic co-magnetometers via precise null-point characterization

Xiaoping Li, Wenfeng Fan, Shimiao Fan +2 more

The long-term bias stability of spin-exchange relaxation-free atomic co-magnetometers is significantly constrained by coupled opto-thermal fluctuations. Traditionally, random systemic offsets at the magnetic compensation point lead to inconsistent opto-thermal coupling, compromising the reproducibility of sensor performance. In this work, we propose a method to simultaneously decouple and suppress these primary drifts by precisely characterizing the physical null-point of the atomic ensemble. A combined compensation scheme, joining residual rotation angle alignment and transverse magnetic field adjustment, is implemented to isolate the sensor output from fluctuations in probe laser intensity and vapor cell temperature. Experimental results demonstrate that the sensitivities to temperature drifts and probe power fluctuations are suppressed simultaneously at the identified null-point by factors of 72 and 880, respectively. This approach establishes a stable zero point, which is expected to significantly enhance sensor reproducibility and stability without sacrificing fundamental sensing performance.

Probe beam influence on spin polarization in spin-exchange relaxation-free co-magnetometers

Yao Wei, Xing Li, Yueyang Zhai +4 more

Abstract Spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) co-magnetometers have promising applications in both inertial navigation and fundamental physics experiments. However, the fluctuation in the spin polarization caused by the probe beam has a non-negligible influence on the co-magnetometer signal. In this paper, a theoretical model containing three parameters of the probe beam is established by extending the coupled Bloch equation. Based on this model, the influence of probe power density on the transient and steady-state response of the SERF co-magnetometer is analyzed. According to the transient response model, a new measurement method for transverse optical pumping of the probe beam is proposed. Then, for the steady-state response model, a steady-state error suppression method is suggested by adjusting the degree of circular polarization of the probe beam. Eventually, the suppression method is used to refine the SERF co-magnetometer, achieving a suppression rate of 70.31% in transverse electron spin polarization fluctuations, thus improving the co-magnetometer to a stability of 0.0079∘ h−1. To our knowledge, this is better than what has been reported so far.

Effects of pump laser intensity on the cell temperature working point in a K-Rb- 21 Ne spin-exchange relaxation-free co-magnetometer

Jiasen Ruan, Lihong Duan, Yang Fu +2 more

The cell temperature working point optimization of the spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) co-magnetometer is studied theoretically and experimentally in this article. Based on the steady-state solution of the Bloch equations, the steady-state response model of the K-Rb- 21 Ne SERF co-magnetometer output signal with cell temperature is established in this paper. And combined with the model, a method to find the optimal working point of the cell temperature that incorporates the pump laser intensity is proposed. The scale factor of the co-magnetometer under different pump laser intensities and cell temperatures is obtained experimentally, and the long-term stability of the co-magnetometer at the different cell temperatures with corresponding pump laser intensities is measured. The results show that the bias instability of the co-magnetometer is reduced from 0.0311 deg/h to 0.0169 deg/h by obtaining the optimal working point of the cell temperature, which verifies the validity and accuracy of the theoretical derivation and the proposed method.

The Space Density Distribution of Alkali Metal Atoms in a SERF Atomic Magnetometer

Qiang Guo, Xuewen Li, Ning Zhang +4 more

The number density of alkali atoms in vaper cell is an important parameter for atomic magnetometer. The vapor cell is usually heated to a high temperature for the number density exceed to 1018m−3to achieve the spin-exchange-relaxation-free (SERF) process. The optical rotation of multichannel atomic magnetometers is affected by the number density distribution. We present an effective method for monitoring and analyzing the spatial distribution homogeneity of the atomic number density in the alkali metal cell within the SERF magnetometer. The numerical results from researching the model of electric heating films and ovens show that the temperature gradient increases with an increase in the cell temperature. This causes an nonuniform number density distribution based on the saturated vapor pressure curve. We present a laser absorption spectroscopy method by using the high-resolution beam profiling camera to record the power of the beam before and after the cell. An optimized optical system of the atomic magnetometer has been established by measuring the the number density variation in the spatial distribution in mm scale. The number density variation coefficient, which is introduced to evaluate the distribution homogeneity, increases from 0.0257 to 0.0333 when the temperature of the oven wall rises from 140°C to 190 °C, showing the same trend as the simulation results. The optical rotation distribution is calculated according to the magnetometer output signal formula. This study is of great interest for optimizing the oven structure and improving the stability of atomic spin polarization and sensitivity of the multichannel magnetometer.
