Abstract

Abstract We present a theoretical study of four-wave mixing (FWM) in a degenerate two-level atomic system subject to a magnetic field whose Zeeman sublevels constitute a tripod-type atomic system, which is driven by a linearly polarized field, and coupled and probed by two sets of left and right circularly polarized fields. The optical effects of coherent hole burning (CHB) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) are involved in the coherent system, among which the CHB has much larger response for the FWM than the EITs. Three situations of CHB are involved, and they are the solitary CHB, overlapped CHBs, and an overlap between CHB and EIT. The overlapped CHBs have the greatest magnitude of FWM signal among the three situations. Whereas, for the overlapped CHB and EIT, it has the smallest FWM magnitude, which is no more than one tenth of the former. While for the single CHB, the FWM magnitude is half of that of the overlapped CHBs. It is noted that, in the overlap between CHB and EIT, dual EIAs can be obtained, whose FWM signal also has an enhancement in comparison to no EIA.

Research on Coherent Hole-burning in Four-level Atom with Two Coherent Radiation Fields

In this paper,in the four-level atomic system,we analyze the atomic absorbing spectra driven by one saturation field and two coherent coupling fields. There are six coherent hole-burnings(CHBs) and one electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) in the spectra, when the coupling lasers co-propagates with the probe laser and counter-propagates with saturating lasers. We interpret the reason of the CHB and calculate the position of the CHB in absorbing spectra.

Enhancement of electromagnetically induced absorption and four-wave mixing in a double two-level system

Yunpeng Wang, Yingjie Du

Abstract We present a theoretical investigation of the electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) due to transfer of population (TOP) in the double two-level system (TLS). It shows that one TLS is responsible for the sub-natural absorption part of EIA, and the other TLS is responsible for the natural absorption part of EIA. We propose a scheme in which the sub-natural absorption part of EIA is governed by the effect of coherent hole burning (CHB) and achieves an enhancement of at least two orders of magnitude with the detuned coupling field, while the natural absorption part is dominated by the effect of Mollow absorption (MA) and does not change with the detuned coupling field. Due to the effects of CHB and MA, the magnitude of four-wave mixing (FWM) achieves a significant increase for double TLS. We show in detail the evolution of the magnitude of the FWM signal with coupling detuning and Rabi frequency. It is demonstrated that strong resonances occur in the FWM profile at frequencies symmetrically displaced from the frequency of the coupling field by coupling detuning.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and four wave mixing in coherently coupled Λ system

Min Kyeong Kim, Lim Lee, Xumei Su +1 more

We have measured electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and four wave mixing (FWM) signals in a three level atomic system to enhance nonlinearity for a weak field due to quantum coherence with standing fields. We were able to observe quite different EIT signals according to a traveling or standing coupling field. (1) We obtained EIT and FWM signals depending on detunings, polarization, (2) and power of the coupling field. Our results will be analyzed theoretically in viewpoint of a photonic band gap model.

Controlling four-wave mixing and six-wave mixing in a multi-Zeeman-sublevel atomic system with electromagnetically induced transparency

Yigang Du, Yanpeng Zhang, Cuicui Zuo +8 more

We theoretically investigate the dually dressed electromagnetically induced transparency, and the multidressed four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) processes in an inverted-$Y$-type atomic system with Zeeman sublevels. The results show that the Zeeman degeneracy of the dark states can be lifted by the dressing field as its intensity is increased. Moreover, the derived analytical expressions indicate that one can, for example, selectively create secondary dark states on the multi-Zeeman-sublevel dark states (by tuning the coupling field), distinguish two different types of dark states generated in two FWM processes (by properly controlling the coupling field intensity), and selectively enhance multi-FWM signals coming from various paths consisting of split Zeeman sublevels (by tuning the dressing field). The SWM signals can be either enhanced or suppressed by controlling the dressing field.

Effects of static magnetic field, driving laser strength and polarization on the coherent properties of a microwave mediated four-level tripod-type atomic system

Aparajita Das, Md. Mabud Hossain

Abstract In this theoretical work, we study the optical behaviour of a microwave driven four-level tripod-type atomic system, configured by Zeeman sub-levels in D 1 line of 87 Rb atom. The non-optical microwave field (L) reasonably assists the optical pumping by a linearly polarized (π) laser field (P1) and a right-handed circularly polarized (σ +) laser field (P2), in presence as well as absence of a static magnetic field (MF). The optical responses of the system to the left-handed circularly polarized (σ −) optical probe laser field (Pr) under three specific P1-P2 strength conditions depict substantial variations in the Doppler-free and Doppler-broadened absorption peaks, accompanied with single EIT or double EIT windows. The origin of Doppler-free Pr absorption peaks are explained by analyzing the resonant poles for the scanning Pr which attribute to the decaying-dressed-states. Perceptible changes of resonant pole positions on the complex planes of the poles w. r. t. the applied MF and L signify that one can externally alter the optical responses of the medium. The related Pr dispersion and its controllability are discussed as well. It is found that the interaction length of the Doppler-free medium has a prominent effect on the Pr absorption and transmission when both MF and L are present in the medium. Furthermore, we have shown the modifications in the Doppler-free Pr absorption profiles in presence of MF and L by considering P2 as an elliptically polarized laser field. Interestingly, Pr absorption turns into Pr gain at suitable polarization rotation angles of the elliptically polarized P2 field for different P1-P2 strength ratios.

Electromagnetically induced grating in a degenerate open two-level system

George C. Cardoso, J. W. R. Tabosa

Summary form only given. The demonstration of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) on an atomic transition along with its potential possibilities of applications has driven a much deeper investigation on the atom-field interaction, specifically concerning to the level degeneracy. This coherent response of an atomic system can also be studied through four-wave mixing (FWM), a process named electromagnetically induced grating (EIG) which present the advantage of being a background free technique. In this work we present results on the observation of subnatural EIG resonance in a degenerate open two-level system where the Zeeman degeneracy plays a important role. The experiment is performed in cold cesium atoms obtained from a MOT and employs the conventional backwards FWM configuration.
