Abstract

In this paper,in the four-level atomic system,we analyze the atomic absorbing spectra driven by one saturation field and two coherent coupling fields. There are six coherent hole-burnings(CHBs) and one electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) in the spectra, when the coupling lasers co-propagates with the probe laser and counter-propagates with saturating lasers. We interpret the reason of the CHB and calculate the position of the CHB in absorbing spectra.

Optical hole-burnings and slow light in atoms vapors with laser interaction

李东康 Li Dongkang, 刘玉娟 Liu Yujuan

Five coherent hole-burning can be simultaneously observed in the absorption spectra of four-level N-style atoms vapors. In this system they adopt a saturated laser co-propagates and two coupling lasers counter-propagate with a probe laser, and the saturated laser can not be in the destructive Doppler state with the probe light. The positions of the coherent hole-burning can be explained by Dressed-state theory. The middle narrow deep hole-burning is induced by the superposition of two coherent hole-burnings. The depth of the coherent hole-burning can be changed by adjusting the reference parameters and the Rabi frequency of the saturated laser. The positions of the coherent hole-burning can be changed by modulating the Rabi frequency of the probe light. By numerical simulation it is found that Rabi frequency of the saturated light plays an important role in slowing the propagating speed. These results may be useful in optical quantum memory and optical quantum information.

Coherent hole-burning phenomenon in a Doppler broadened three-level -type atomic system

In a Doppler broadened three-level Λ-type atomic system, we investigate the absorption spectrum of a weak probe laser in the presence of a saturating laser and a coupling laser. We find that, in order to observe coherent hole-burnings effectively, the two lower levels should be so well spaced that atomic collisions can be neglected, and the saturating (coupling) laser should counter-propagate (co-propagate) with the probe laser. We also give a qualitative analysis to understand the physical origin of coherent hole-burnings.

Enhancement of four-wave mixing due to coherent hole burning in a degenerate two-level system

Liu Zhi-Yuan, Yao Yi-Fan, Yue 悦 Sun 孙 +2 more

Abstract We present a theoretical study of four-wave mixing (FWM) in a degenerate two-level atomic system subject to a magnetic field whose Zeeman sublevels constitute a tripod-type atomic system, which is driven by a linearly polarized field, and coupled and probed by two sets of left and right circularly polarized fields. The optical effects of coherent hole burning (CHB) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) are involved in the coherent system, among which the CHB has much larger response for the FWM than the EITs. Three situations of CHB are involved, and they are the solitary CHB, overlapped CHBs, and an overlap between CHB and EIT. The overlapped CHBs have the greatest magnitude of FWM signal among the three situations. Whereas, for the overlapped CHB and EIT, it has the smallest FWM magnitude, which is no more than one tenth of the former. While for the single CHB, the FWM magnitude is half of that of the overlapped CHBs. It is noted that, in the overlap between CHB and EIT, dual EIAs can be obtained, whose FWM signal also has an enhancement in comparison to no EIA.

First-principles experimental observation of coherent hole burnings in atomic rubidium vapor

Xiaogang Wei, Jin‐Hui Wu, Hai-Hua Wang +4 more

We demonstrate in experiment that the simultaneous use of two laser fields, a saturating and a coupling field, allows us to observe three or four coherent hole burnings with controllable widths, depths, and positions in a single Doppler absorption profile. Appropriate theoretical simulations and analysis show that these correlated coherent hole burnings result from the combination of strong saturating excitation and dynamically induced quantum coherence.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in an inverted Y-type four-level system

Jianbing Qi

The interaction of a weak probe laser with an inverted Y-type four-level atomic system driven by two additional coherent fields is investigated theoretically. Under the influence of the coherent coupling fields, the steady-state linear susceptibility of the probe laser shows that the system can have single or double electromagnetically induced transparency windows depending on the amplitude and the detuning of the coupling lasers. The corresponding index of refraction associated with the group velocity of the probe laser can be controlled at both transparency windows by the coupling fields. The propagation of the probe field can be switched from superluminal near the resonance to subluminal on resonance within the single transparency window when two coupling lasers are on resonance. We propose an atomic 87Rb system for experimental observation.

Multiple Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Four-Level Atomic System

Xiangyang Zhang

Using matrix theory, the absorption and dispersion properties of a lamda-type four-level system driven by two coherent fields are investigated. The result obtained by means of numerical method indicates that by adjusting the intensity of Rabi frequencies of the coherent field in the steady state, double or single electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) can appear explicitly in this system. And the explanations of these phenomena are given by using the dressed states. In the double electromagnetically induced transparency, the location of transparent windows can be manipulated by controlling the detuning of the driving field.Additionally,it is also found that the medium shows a large refractive index at each transparency window, and the group velocity of the probe laser can be enhanced.
