Development of Modern Cryptography and Research on Quantum Cryptography

Masayuki Abe

The foundation of modern cryptography developed in 1976 considered security by modeling adversaries as polynomial-time Turing machines. However, recent advances in developing a general-purpose quantum computer have made a significant impact on modern cryptography because it overturns the security model.NTT's research on cryptography aims to provide technologies to ensure the security of modern information systems and create applications when quantum computers become widespread. This article reviews the 40 years of cryptologic research at NTT and outlines our current efforts.

Research of Cryptographic Protocols for Secure Communications in the Quantum Computer Era

Takashi Yamakawa

The development of quantum computers has been progressing rapidly in recent years based on principles fundamentally different from those of conventional computers. It is known that they can be used to break many of the encryption schemes that are now in actual use.To counter this threat, there is a need for "postquantum cryptography" that cannot be broken even by quantum computers. In this interview, we asked NTT Distinguished Researcher Takashi Yamakawa to tell about his research in solving such social issues using cryptography.

Next-generation cryptographic techniques for robust network security

Himmat Rathore

Cryptography is a key enabling tool in digital security that is needed to protect information, secure communication, and ensure the integrity between connected networks. As cybersecurity threats continue to emerge constantly and, as evidenced by APTs, ransomware, and, later, quantum cyber threats, the need for stronger, more modern generations of cryptographic methods is more urgent than ever. Therefore, this paper seeks to discuss the emerging trends in the most recent cryptographic advancements including post quantum cryptography, homomorphic cryptography and security paradigms leveraging on blockchain system. These techniques are equally effective in correcting significant limitations of existing systems and in improving their overall efficiency and rates. The coursework points out the inherent weaknesses of traditional cryptographic solutions, such as the exposure to quantum computing threat models and their ability to address current and future security needs. Through a brief discussion of the theoretical background and practical implementations, this paper aims to assess the efficiency of the latest cryptographic technologies in strengthening network security measures. Research insights show that using third-generation cryptographic approaches is far more effective in protecting information from new risks. Besides, applying these methods in essential industries, including finance, healthcare, and IoT, supports the practical utilization of these methods. Based on the findings of this research, these innovations should be adopted to secure digital structure in a growing complex environment.

Securing the Future: A Comprehensive Review of Post-Quantum Cryptography and Emerging Algorithms

Winfred Allgyer, Tyler White, Tarek A. Youssef

In the modern world, technological advancements are being made nearly every day. However, some of these advancements also give way to new vulnerabilities in the security systems implemented in the world today. Specifically, the slowly growing realm of quantum computers has triggered many researchers and experts to raise the alarm on the security of current cryptographic methods used to safeguard personal and valuable information from unauthorized entities. Many experts agree that the topic of post-quantum cryptography is a field that needs immediate attention to prevent a severe crisis when quantum computers become stable enough to run reliably. While it has been slow to this point, a breakthrough will likely trigger a wave of innovation that could rapidly overtake the world. In this paper, the current cryptographic systems, the basics of quantum computing, and post-quantum cryptography as well as the new algorithms associated with it will be discussed. This paper will provide a base of information in which readers will be introduced to several viewpoints regarding the matter of post-quantum cryptography.
