In an era of unprecedented technological advancement, the rise of quantum computing poses both opportunities and challenges to network security. While quantum computers promise to revolutionize data processing and problem-solving, they also render traditional cryptographic protocols vulnerable, threatening the integrity of current network security systems. Quantum cryptography, particularly quantum key distribution (QKD), emerges as a groundbreaking solution, leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics to ensure unparalleled data security. Unlike classical methods, QKD guarantees secure communication by detecting eavesdropping attempts, as any observation of quantum states disrupts their integrity. This paper explores the pivotal role of quantum cryptography in shaping future network security protocols amidst a landscape of increasing cyber threats. It provides a comprehensive analysis of QKD systems, their integration into existing infrastructure, and their resilience against potential quantum-based attacks. The discussion includes real-world implementations, such as satellite-based QKD networks and fiber-optic quantum communication systems, illustrating their practical viability and scalability. Furthermore, the paper addresses current challenges, including cost, technical complexity, and interoperability with classical networks, offering insights into ongoing research aimed at overcoming these hurdles. As global reliance on digital infrastructure grows, the transition to quantum-resilient security frameworks becomes imperative. Policymakers, industry leaders, and technology developers must collaborate to advance quantum cryptographic technologies and ensure their accessibility. By securing communication channels against both classical and quantum threats, quantum cryptography is positioned to redefine the foundations of network security, paving the way for a more secure and interconnected digital future.

The looming threat of quantum attacks on the digital infrastructure protected by conventional cryptographic protocol has generated urgency in identifying and deploying countermeasures that can mitigate the threat. There is a need for stronger cryptographic schemes that combine the strengths of both classic and quantum technologies. Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) has emerged as a potential solution that can withstand the challenges posed by advances in quantum computing. Owing to the increasing importance of PQC, the present research is an attempt to assess the existing research done so far so that the existing gaps can be identified which can then strengthen the existing literature. The systematic literature review presented in this work has outlined six key categories of PQC, namely, lattice-based, code-based, hash-based, multivariate, isogeny-based, symmetric-key-based cryptosystems. The study concluded that the advances made in quantum computing will result in the development of quantum computers with superior computational power. Such highly efficient quantum computers will have the ability to break the currently available cryptography schemes most used in a variety of practical applications. With the advent of quantum computing, the computational capabilities of the potential cyber attackers would grow exponentially, which would render the traditional cyber security measures inadequate. This calls for techniques like PQC to be developed and strengthen.
The rapid development of quantum computing presents a significant challenge to existing cryptographic systems, such as RSA and Elliptic Curve Cryptography, which rely on the complexity of mathematical problems for security. Shor’s algorithm, which can efficiently solve these problems, emphasizes the need for cryptographic solutions that are resistant to quantum threats. This study aims to investigate the potential of Quantum Cryptography, with a specific focus on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), to strengthen network security in response to emerging quantum computing risks. Despite the theoretical potential of QKD, there remains a gap in its practical application, particularly in terms of scalability, high implementation costs, and sensitivity to environmental factors, which have hindered its widespread adoption. The novelty of this research lies in the comprehensive approach it takes, combining theoretical analysis of QKD protocols, simulations using Qiskit, and comparisons with traditional cryptographic methods. This provides a more robust understanding of QKD effectiveness in different network scenarios. The study reveals that the BB84 protocol consistently outperforms the E91 protocol in terms of key generation efficiency and noise resilience. However, despite its unmatched security capabilities, QKD faces challenges such as scalability and implementation costs. To overcome these challenges and achieve widespread adoption, integrating QKD with post quantum cryptography and developing hybrid approaches are essential. Quantum Cryptography, particularly QKD, holds the potential to become a cornerstone for securing critical infrastructure, ensuring communication security in the quantum era.
