Optimization of the threshold for degenerate optical parametric oscillations in a bichromatically pumped microresonator

Nadezhda S. Tatarinova, Artem E. Shitikov, Georgii V. Grechko +5 more

Integrated microring resonators have a broad range of applications in diverse fields with the potential to design compact, robust, energy-efficient devices crucial for quantum applications. Degenerate optical parametric oscillations (DOPOs) realized in dual-pumped microring resonator with third-order optical nonlinearity are of special interest. They demonstrate both bistability of the phase of the excited signal mode and generation of nonclassical light, which can be used for coherent photonic computing. Using coupled mode equations, we perform a comprehensive numerical analysis of DOPO conditions with normal group velocity dispersion and with bichromatic pumping. Through analytical and numerical approaches, we identify optimal setup parameter values that minimize the threshold power, highlighting the importance of considering the full spectrum of mode interactions. Additionally, we show that dispersion engineering, achievable in photonic molecules or photonic crystal microresonators, may provide a targeted frequency shift of specific microresonator modes resulting in pump power threshold reduction.

Experimental Study of Squeezed States Generation Optimal Regimes in Dual-pumped On-chip Microresonators

We perform an experimental optimization of squeezed light generation via degenerate optical parametric oscillation process in dual-pumped integrated microresonators. This process is sensitive to the power and frequency detunings of the pumps, and the threshold of this process depends on the spectral interval between pumps.

Degenerate squeezing in a dual-pumped integrated microresonator: Parasitic processes and their suppression

Hossein Seifoory, Z. Vernon, Dylan H. Mahler +3 more

Using a general Hamiltonian treatment, we theoretically study the generation of degenerate quadrature squeezing in a dual-pumped integrated microring resonator coupled to a waveguide. Considering a dual-pump four-wave mixing configuration in an integrated ${\text{Si}}_{3}{\text{N}}_{4}$ platform, and following the coupled-mode theory approach, we investigate the effects of parasitic quantum nonlinear optical processes on the generation of squeezed light. Considering five resonance modes in this approach allows us to include the most important four-wave mixing processes involved in such a configuration. We theoretically explore the effects of the pump detunings on different nonlinear processes and show that the effects of some of the parasitic processes are effectively neutralized by symmetrically detuning the two pumps. This yields a significant enhancement in the output squeezing quality without physically changing the structure, but suffers from the trade-off of requiring substantially higher pump power for a fixed target level of squeezing.

The single-mode and two-mode squeezed light generated in ring microresonators: Theoretical limitations and experimental possibilities

Stepan N. Balybin, Andrey Voloshin, Olga V. Tikhonova

The correlation properties of photon pairs generated in high-Q whispering-gallery mode microresonators in the four wave mixing process are analyzed theoretically. The degree of two-mode squeezing and photon entanglement are investigated depending on different parameters of the pump or microresonator, and the optimal regime for maximum squeezing is found. Various experimental configurations are analyzed, and the most optimal options for compact generation of two-mode squeezed light are found.

Beyond critical coupling: optimal design considerations for spontaneous four-wave mixing in microring resonators

Joseph M. Lukens, Karthik V. Myilswamy, Alexander Miloshevsky +1 more

We present a self-contained analytical model for biphoton generation in microring resonators. Encompassing both all-pass and add-drop geometries, identical and distinct pump and biphoton coupling coefficients, and continuous-wave and pulsed pumping, our interaction-picture-based approach reveals time-frequency biphoton correlations while also predicting absolute generation rates. Under continuous-wave excitation, we find critical coupling of both the pump and biphoton to maximize the rate of single photons extracted from the microring, whereas critical coupling of the pump but overcoupling of the biphoton maximize the two-photon rate. Under pulsed pumping, overcoupling of both pump and biphoton (to different degrees) maximizes photon extraction probabilities, albeit under a tradeoff with spectral factorability that we quantify via parameter scans over a range of coupler pairings. As a whole, our formalism should prove valuable for the practical design of integrated photon sources, merging a flexible and intuitive biphoton-centric depiction with quantitative predictions closely tied to experimental parameters.
