Abstract

Abstract In light of the imperative for expeditious data processing and enhanced global connectivity, the domain of communication technology is experiencing a rapid progression from the Fifth Generation (5G) to the forthcoming Sixth Generation (6G) within the research community. Furthermore, 6G promises to significantly augment the synergy between the human, digital, and physical realms, thereby necessitating the formulation of novel Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) as well as Key Values Indicators (KVIs), and the assimilation of commensurate technologies. Among these technologies, quantum computing is evolving rapidly due to its inherent advantages from quantum mechanics. Nevertheless, scant attention is directed toward a comprehensive exploration of the consequences attendant to its present‐day application. The principal objective of this article resides in its endeavor to underscore, from a compensatory perspective, the convergence of 6G and quantum computing while concurrently considering the Sustainable Development Goals and its KVIs.

Quantum-Enabled 6G Wireless Networks: Opportunities and Challenges

Chonggang Wang, Akbar Rahman

With the increasing number of commercial 5G deployments, research on beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G has started in earnest. Although it is too early to clearly identify what 6G systems will look like or how they will be designed, it is certain that 6G systems will support novel use cases with challenging key performance indicators (KPIs), which will be empowered by new enabling technologies and network architectures. In parallel with the evolution of cellular systems from 5G toward 6G, quantum information technology (QIT) has been evolving rapidly in recent years in terms of quantum communications and quantum computing. It is envisioned that QIT will enable and boost future 6G systems from both communication and computing perspectives. For example, secure quantum communications such as quantum key distribution can be leveraged to improve 6G security. This article aims to provide a technology-driven and visionary description and exploration on how QIT can be leveraged for future 6G wireless networks.

Quantum Technologies for Beyond 5G and 6G Networks: Applications, Opportunities, and Challenges

Engin Zeydan, Chamitha de Alwis, Rabia Khan +4 more

As the world prepares for the advent of 6G networks, quantum technologies are becoming critical enablers of the next generation of communication systems. This survey paper investigates the convergence of quantum technologies and 6G networks, focusing on their applications, opportunities and challenges. We begin with an examination of the motivations for integrating quantum technologies into 6G, investigating the potential to overcome the limits of classical computing and cryptography. We then highlight key research gaps, particularly in quantum communication, quantum computing integration and security enhancement. A comprehensive overview of quantum technologies relevant to 6G, including quantum communication devices, quantum computing paradigms, and hybrid quantum-classical approaches is provided. A particular focus is on the role of quantum technologies in enhancing 6G Radio Access Networks (RAN), 6G core and edge network optimization, and 6G security. The survey paper also explores the application of quantum cryptography with a focus on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), Quantum Secure Direct Communication (QSDC) and quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms and assesses their implementation challenges and potential impact on 6G networks. We also discuss the significant challenges associated with integrating quantum technologies into existing communications infrastructures, including issues of technological maturity, standardization, and economic considerations. Finally, we summarize the lessons learned from current research and outline future research directions to guide the ongoing development of quantum-enabled 6G networks.

The Quantum Revolution in Telecommunications: 6G and Solutions for MobileOperators

Fatih Çögen, Zehra Yığıt, Buse Bilgin

In general, quantum technologies and quantum algorithms possess transformative potential for next-generation communication systems. Particularly with the unprecedented data speeds, ultra-low latency, and seamless global connectivity promised by 6G, these technologies are expected to offer significant opportunities for telecommunications and mobile network operators. The integration of quantum computing can play a role in optimizing network operations, improving resource management, reducing energy consumption, and increasing data processing efficiency. For mobile network operators, this will result in significant progress in key performance indicators (KPIs) such as scalability, reliability, and security. Furthermore, quantum cryptography will be of critical importance by introducing new security standards for real-time data protection. This paper will focus on a mobile network operators perspective and explore potential solutions. It will assess the synergy between quantum technologies and telecommunications, focusing on key topics such as network latency, bandwidth optimization, and energy efficiency. By leveraging quantum computing, the paper will explore how future telecommunications networks can become faster, more secure, and more sustainable.

Quantum-Computing-Based Channel and Signal Modeling for 6G Wireless Systems

Ahmed Farouk, Najah Abed Abuali, Shahid Mumtaz

Sixth generation (6G) wireless technology introduces a paradigm shift and fundamental transformation of digital wireless connectivity by converging pillars of softwarization, virtualization, and wireless networks. Terahertz (THz) communication technologies are predicted to become more significant in 6G applications as the requirement for bandwidth grows and wireless cell sizes shrink. As a result, 6G will be able to deal with and manage numerous devices and services requiring enhanced spectral throughput and efficiently work with high interference levels. This convergence highlights the increased threat surface of 6G networks and the potentially severe impacts of sophisticated cyber incidents. Furthermore, the heterogeneity of connected devices and provided services will generate a huge amount of data to be processed and managed efficiently. Quantum computing (QC) can efficiently solve several 6G computationally hard problems with a quadratic speedup and provide adaptive techniques for controlling the current and future significant security threats of the 6G network. This article discusses the role of various QC components in 6G and explores the opportunities and challenges of achieving such transformation.
