Muhammad Azeem Akbar, Arif Ali Khan, Sami Hyrynsalmi

The emergence of 6 G technology heralds a groundbreaking era in digital connectivity, envisaging universal and seamless links. To address the intricate computational and security requirements of this revolution, the integration of quantum computing (QC) into these networks is perceived as a promising solution. The objective this study presents a comprehensive investigation into the potential roles and implications of QC within the context of 6 G technology. To address the objectives of this study, firstly, we have conducted literature survey to identify the key applications of using QC in 6 G technology. Secondly, we performed interview study with industry experts to identify the best practices related to the key application of QC in 6 G technology. Our study unfolds in two distinct stages: firstly, we identify 15 key applications of QC in 6 G technology and segmented into 4 core areas. Secondly, the literature findings were empirically validated by conducting interview study and identified 49 best practices related to one of the identified key applications of QC in 6 G technology. The outcomes of this research lay a solid foundation for understanding both the pivotal applications of QC in 6 G technology and the effective practices for its implementation, thus providing valuable insights to both academics and industry practitioners.

Quantum Technologies for Beyond 5G and 6G Networks: Applications, Opportunities, and Challenges

Engin Zeydan, Chamitha de Alwis, Rabia Khan +4 more

As the world prepares for the advent of 6G networks, quantum technologies are becoming critical enablers of the next generation of communication systems. This survey paper investigates the convergence of quantum technologies and 6G networks, focusing on their applications, opportunities and challenges. We begin with an examination of the motivations for integrating quantum technologies into 6G, investigating the potential to overcome the limits of classical computing and cryptography. We then highlight key research gaps, particularly in quantum communication, quantum computing integration and security enhancement. A comprehensive overview of quantum technologies relevant to 6G, including quantum communication devices, quantum computing paradigms, and hybrid quantum-classical approaches is provided. A particular focus is on the role of quantum technologies in enhancing 6G Radio Access Networks (RAN), 6G core and edge network optimization, and 6G security. The survey paper also explores the application of quantum cryptography with a focus on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), Quantum Secure Direct Communication (QSDC) and quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms and assesses their implementation challenges and potential impact on 6G networks. We also discuss the significant challenges associated with integrating quantum technologies into existing communications infrastructures, including issues of technological maturity, standardization, and economic considerations. Finally, we summarize the lessons learned from current research and outline future research directions to guide the ongoing development of quantum-enabled 6G networks.

In‐Network Quantum Computing for Future 6G Networks

Helen Urgelles, Shivam Maheshwari, Swaraj Shekhar Nande +3 more

Abstract In light of the imperative for expeditious data processing and enhanced global connectivity, the domain of communication technology is experiencing a rapid progression from the Fifth Generation (5G) to the forthcoming Sixth Generation (6G) within the research community. Furthermore, 6G promises to significantly augment the synergy between the human, digital, and physical realms, thereby necessitating the formulation of novel Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) as well as Key Values Indicators (KVIs), and the assimilation of commensurate technologies. Among these technologies, quantum computing is evolving rapidly due to its inherent advantages from quantum mechanics. Nevertheless, scant attention is directed toward a comprehensive exploration of the consequences attendant to its present‐day application. The principal objective of this article resides in its endeavor to underscore, from a compensatory perspective, the convergence of 6G and quantum computing while concurrently considering the Sustainable Development Goals and its KVIs.

Anuj Tripathi, Girish C. Tiwari, Teena Bagga

This study presents a strategic framework to accelerate India's quantum computing (QC) advancement by leveraging its established foundation. As qc takes root in India, the potential for transformative impact across sectors such as optimization, cryptography, and artificial intelligence becomes significant. This research traces India's growth—from indigenous technology development in the 1970s to its role as a digital economy leader—and explores how this legacy positions India for leadership in the QC domain. A comparative look at classical computing versus quantum computing (Table 1) shows how qubits enable unprecedented computational efficiency, which is essential for complex problem-solving. The framework (figure 1) prioritizes academic and industry needs, addressing skill-building, policy support, and regulatory alignment crucial for effective QC integration. This framework shows the role of universities and research centers in creating QC programs. It also encourages innovation and development of QC applications for specific fields such as healthcare, finance, and logistics. Although there are technical and infrastructure challenges, the study recommends strategies for Indian industries to start using QC, including hybrid approaches to address current limitations. By incorporating human-computer interaction principles, the framework advocates accessible, user-friendly QC platforms. Using the principles of human-computer interaction, the framework promotes easy-to-use, accessible quantum computing (QC) platforms. It evaluates India's readiness for QC by examining skills, institutional preparation, and how well it aligns with global standards. This study seeks to create a QC-ready workforce. Partnerships between industries and universities can accomplish this. The partnership will help elevate India's position in the global QC landscape. Drawing insights from the framework developed by European competencies on quantum technologies it is recommended that basic and advanced QC skills suited to India's specific needs be developed.
