Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the response of passive quantum linear systems in a non-Markovian environment to single photon input fields. Based on an augmented modelling method for non-Markovian quantum systems, analytic forms of output intensity and output covariance function in steady-state are derived. These results allow us to quantitatively analyze the influence of non-Markovian environment on system response under a framework of linear system theory.

Analysis of Quantum Linear Systems' Response to Multi-photon States

Guo‐Feng Zhang

The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical framework for analyzing the response of quantum linear systems driven by multi-photon states. Both the factorizable (namely, no correlation among the photons in the channel) and unfactorizable multi-photon states are treated. Pulse information of multi-photon input state is encoded in terms of tensor, and response of quantum linear systems to multi-photon input states is characterized by tensor operations. Analytic forms of output correlation functions and output states are derived. The proposed framework is applicable no matter whether the underlying quantum dynamic system is passive or active. The results presented here generalize those in the single-photon setting studied in (Milburn, 2008) and (Zhang and James, 2013}). Moreover, interesting multi-photon interference phenomena studied in (Sanaka, Resch, and Zeilinger, 2006), (Ou, 2007), and (Bartley, et al., 2012) can be reproduced in the proposed framework

On the response of linear quantum stochastic systems to single-photon inputs and pulse shaping of photon wave packets

Guofeng Zhang, M. R. James

The purpose of this paper is to study the response of linear quantum stochastic systems to continuous mode single photon input fields. Given multi-channel continuous-mode single-photon input fields interacting with a linear quantum optical system which may contain active components, two expressions for the corresponding mean steady state output intensity are derived. In the single channel case, a synthesis theorem is proposed for pulse shaping of single-photon wave packets by all-pass quantum optics networks. Moreover, for the all-pass case, the steady-state states of output fields are derived. Several examples illustrate the main results.

On the Response of Quantum Linear Systems to Single Photon Input Fields

Guofeng Zhang, M. R. James

The purpose of this paper is to extend linear systems and signals theory to include single photon quantum signals. We provide detailed results describing how quantum linear systems respond to multichannel single photon quantum signals. In particular, we characterize the class of states (which we call photon-Gaussian states) that result when multichannel photons are input to a quantum linear system. We show that this class of quantum states is preserved by quantum linear systems. Multichannel photon-Gaussian states are defined via the action of certain creation and annihilation operators on Gaussian states. Our results show how the output states are determined from the input states through a pair of transfer function relations. We also provide equations from which output signal intensities can be computed. Examples from quantum optics are provided to illustrate the results.

Transfer functions of non-Markovian linear quantum feedback networks

Re-Bing Wu, TZYH JONG TARN

Enabled by rapidly developing quantum technologies, it is possible to network quantum systems at a much larger scale in the near future. To deal with non-Markovian dynamics that is prevalent in solid-state devices, we propose a general transfer function based framework for modeling linear quantum networks, in which signal flow graphs are applied to characterize the network topology by flow of quantum signals. We define a noncommutative ring D and use its elements to construct Hamiltonians, transformations and transfer functions for both active and passive systems. The signal flow graph obtained for direct and indirect coherent quantum feedback systems clearly show the feedback loop via bidirectional signal flows. Importantly, the transfer function from input to output field is derived for non-Markovian quantum systems with colored inputs, from which the Markovian input-output relation can be easily obtained as a limiting case. Moreover, the transfer function possesses a symmetry structure that is analogous to the well-known scattering transformation in Schrödinger picture. Finally, we show that these transfer functions can be integrated to build complex feedback networks via interconnections, serial products and feedback, which may include either direct or indirect coherent feedback loops, and transfer functions between quantum signal nodes can be calculated by the Riegle’s matrix gain rule. The theory paves the way for modeling, analyzing and synthesizing non-Markovian linear quantum feedback networks in the frequency-domain.

Non-Markovian interactions with pulses of quantum radiation

Julien Pinske, Stefan Scheel

The interaction of a traveling pulse of quantum light with a localized quantum system shows non-Markovian features when scattering takes place in a structured environment. Here, we devise a non-Markovian input-output theory by coherently coupling the scatterer to a pseudomode, which decays into a Markovian reservoir. This incorporates memory effects of a structured environment without altering the cascaded nature of the Lindblad master equation, whose solution provides the quantum state of the output field of any desired mode. We apply our theory to the stimulated emission by a two-level atom, and to transmission of a Gaussian pulse through a cavity. We observe that the non-Markovian revival of coherence in the scatterer distorts the single-mode nature of the incoming pulse, thus resulting in a multimode output field.

Covariance Functions for Quantum Linear System Driven by Few Photons

Zhiyuan Dong, Guofeng Zhang, Ai‐Guo Wu

In this paper, we consider that a quantum linear system is driven by two input channels, which contain a single-photon state and an unfactorizable two-photon state. Quantum entanglement between the two channels is analyzed by deriving the explicit forms of the input and output covariance functions. Simulations are conducted by tunning the coupling strengths between the two input channels and the quantum system, which has certain guiding effect on the design and application of quantum optical experiments.
