Abstract

In this paper, we consider that a quantum linear system is driven by two input channels, which contain a single-photon state and an unfactorizable two-photon state. Quantum entanglement between the two channels is analyzed by deriving the explicit forms of the input and output covariance functions. Simulations are conducted by tunning the coupling strengths between the two input channels and the quantum system, which has certain guiding effect on the design and application of quantum optical experiments.

Analysis of Quantum Linear Systems' Response to Multi-photon States

Guo‐Feng Zhang

The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical framework for analyzing the response of quantum linear systems driven by multi-photon states. Both the factorizable (namely, no correlation among the photons in the channel) and unfactorizable multi-photon states are treated. Pulse information of multi-photon input state is encoded in terms of tensor, and response of quantum linear systems to multi-photon input states is characterized by tensor operations. Analytic forms of output correlation functions and output states are derived. The proposed framework is applicable no matter whether the underlying quantum dynamic system is passive or active. The results presented here generalize those in the single-photon setting studied in (Milburn, 2008) and (Zhang and James, 2013}). Moreover, interesting multi-photon interference phenomena studied in (Sanaka, Resch, and Zeilinger, 2006), (Ou, 2007), and (Bartley, et al., 2012) can be reproduced in the proposed framework

Analysis of non-Markovian passive quantum linear systems’ response to single-photon input fields*

Zhengyi Sun, Shibei Xue, Zibo Miao +4 more

In this paper, we analyze the response of passive quantum linear systems in a non-Markovian environment to single photon input fields. Based on an augmented modelling method for non-Markovian quantum systems, analytic forms of output intensity and output covariance function in steady-state are derived. These results allow us to quantitatively analyze the influence of non-Markovian environment on system response under a framework of linear system theory.

On dynamics of a two-qubit coherent feedback network driven by two photons

Guofeng Zhang, Yu Pan

The purpose of this paper is to study the dynamics of a quantum coherent feedback network composed of two two-level systems (qubits) driven by two counter-propagating photons. The coherent feedback network is a marginally stable system, and the spectral entanglement of photons could be enhanced as a consequence of the continuing two-photon interaction inside the feedback loop. By means of quantum stochastic calculus and the input-output framework, the analytic form of the steady-state output field states are derived in the Heisenberg picture for the first time. Based on the analytic form, significant enhancement of photon-photon interaction can be observed. In particular, we demonstrate that the famous Hong-Ou-Mandel effect can be created using this coherent feedback structure. The proposed framework is also applicable in the single-photon scenario.

Generation and evaluation of entanglement between two multi-photon systems using single photon sources and linear optics

Jun-Yi Wu, Holger Friedrich Hofmann

Single photon sources can be used to generate and control highly non-classical states of light. Here, we consider the possibility of generating bi-partite entanglement between two separate multi-photon states by splitting the input modes of the single photon sources into a mode distributed to $A$ and a mode distributed to $B$. If multiple photons are combined at $A$ and at $B$, the large variety of photon patterns observed after linear optics transformations of the local multi-mode systems can be used to characterize the non-classical correlation of this entangled state. However, the transformation between different photon number states in linear optics is a complicated problem, and further analysis is needed to understand the possible applications of this scalable quantum system. To obtain maximal complementarity between two measurements, we consider the unbiased interference of all input modes represented by a discrete Fourier transform of the multi-mode field. We identify characteristic patterns that can be used to identify non-classical correlations between the two multi-photon systems at $A$ and $B$ and derive a quantitative criterion for entanglement verification. Our results indicate that the large scale quantum operations can be achieved by a comparatively simple quantum network interfering the outputs of multiple single photons, where the size of the system mainly depends on the number of available single photon sources.

Exact analysis of quantum filter for systems driven by two counter-propagating single-photon states

Zhiyuan Dong, Guofeng Zhang, Nina H. Amini

In this paper, quantum filtering for a two-level atom, which is illuminated by two counter-propagating single-photon pulses, has been considered. The scenario is equivalent to that the two-level atom is driven by two input light field channels, each of which contains a single-photon. Based on two homodyne detection measurements, filtering equations in the Schrödinger picture have been derived explicitly.

On the Response of Quantum Linear Systems to Single Photon Input Fields

Guofeng Zhang, M. R. James

The purpose of this paper is to extend linear systems and signals theory to include single photon quantum signals. We provide detailed results describing how quantum linear systems respond to multichannel single photon quantum signals. In particular, we characterize the class of states (which we call photon-Gaussian states) that result when multichannel photons are input to a quantum linear system. We show that this class of quantum states is preserved by quantum linear systems. Multichannel photon-Gaussian states are defined via the action of certain creation and annihilation operators on Gaussian states. Our results show how the output states are determined from the input states through a pair of transfer function relations. We also provide equations from which output signal intensities can be computed. Examples from quantum optics are provided to illustrate the results.
