Abstract

Abstract The results of an experimental comparison of the parameters of the coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance for the 87Rb D1 line and the light shifts during the detection of signals from different cross-sectional areas of the interaction of laser radiation with atoms are presented. A method is proposed to search for zero-light-shift operating conditions and their automatic stabilization, which would improve the long-term stability of CPT-resonance-based microwave frequency standards.

Comparison of field shifts in an atomic clock based on the effect of coherent population trapping in 87Rb atoms under modulation of laser pump current at frequencies of 3.4 and 6.8 GHz

S M Ignatovich, Mikhail N Skvortsov, I. S. Mesenzova +4 more

Abstract Experimental parameters of the resonance of coherent population trapping (CTP) on D1 line in 87Rb and light shifts are compared under modulation of the laser pump current at frequencies of 3.4 and 6.8 GHz. Reproducibility of the parameters of a laser with a vertical cavity needed for long-term stability of an atomic clock is considered. The instabilities of atomic CPT-clock obtained for 1 s are 1.2 × 10−11 and 3 × 10−12 for frequencies of 3.4 GHz and 6.8 GHz, respectively.

Optimization of laser radiation for CPT-based miniature frequency standard

К. А. Баранцев, A. N. Litvinov, Evgeniy Popov +1 more

The present work is dedicated to optimization of the laser radiation parameters and optically thickness of the gas cell for improvement of short-term stability of quantum frequency standard based on coherent population trapping effect in the cell with 87Rb working gas and buffer gas. The effects associated with the optical density of the medium are investigated, such as laser spectrum distortion and appearance of the light shifts of the coherent population trapping resonance due to different absorption of frequency components.

Passive atomic frequency standard based on coherent population trapping in ^87Rb using injection-locked lasers

Han Seb Moon, Sang Eon Park, Young‐Ho Park +2 more

We present a microwave frequency standard based on coherent population trapping (CPT) in the 87Rb D1 line. The CPT spectrum is obtained using two Raman lasers with a 6.8 GHz frequency offset by injection locking of a master laser to a slave laser. We have constructed an atomic clock employing a 5 cm long Rb vapor cell confined with 6.67 kPa neon buffer gas at 70 °C. Using this system, we improve the CPT contrast through the elimination of undesired off-resonant fields created by the direct modulation method. We measured the frequency shift of the CPT signal as a function of the temperature of the Rb cell and estimated it to be approximately 1.3 ×10−9/K. The frequency of a 10 MHz crystal oscillator has been stabilized to the CPT spectrum between the two ground states in 87Rb. The relative frequency stability is approximately 2.3×10−12 for an average time of 68 s.

Spectroscopy of coherent population trapping with a light source based on a femtosecond laser

Alexey V. Akimov, N. Kolachevsky, А. В. Соколов +5 more

A new source of the bichromatic laser field with a stable mean value of the difference frequency is used to study coherent population trapping (CPT). A high stability of the difference phase of the fields of the radiation source is achieved by phase locking the radiation frequency of two semiconductor lasers to longitudinal modes of a femtosecond laser. The first experimental results on the spectroscopy of CPT resonances in rubidium are presented. The possibility of using the new method for spectroscopy of CPT resonances in rare-earth atom vapours is discussed.

Spectroscopy of micro-fabricated Cs vapours cells for miniature atomic clocks

D. Miletic, C. Affolderbach, G. Mileti +2 more

In this paper we present our spectroscopic studies on Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) in micro-fabricated Caesium cells and our evaluation of its application in miniature atomic frequency standards (atomic clocks). We observe the CPT signal on the Cs D1-line by coupling two hyperfine ground-state Zeeman sub-levels to a common excited state using two coherent electromagnetic fields created with a modulated DFB laser. Contrarily to double resonance, CPT does not require any microwave cavity, which should facilitate the miniaturization of a future atomic clock device. We study and report here on the light shift phenomena at different cell temperatures and laser wavelength. We also present resonance shifts due to cell temperature variations and clock frequency stability measurements. To the best of our knowledge, this article is the first report on light shift with Cs D1 line in a CPT vapour-cell atomic clock.
