Abstract

The results of an experimental comparison of the parameters of the coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance for the87RbD1line and the light shifts during the detection of signals from different cross-sectional areas of the interaction of laser radiation with atoms are presented. A method is proposed to search for zero-light-shift operating conditions and their automatic stabilization, which would improve the long-term stability of CPT-resonance-based microwave frequency standards.

Comparison of field shifts in an atomic clock based on the effect of coherent population trapping in 87Rb atoms under modulation of laser pump current at frequencies of 3.4 and 6.8 GHz

S M Ignatovich, Mikhail N Skvortsov, I. S. Mesenzova +4 more

Abstract Experimental parameters of the resonance of coherent population trapping (CTP) on D1 line in 87Rb and light shifts are compared under modulation of the laser pump current at frequencies of 3.4 and 6.8 GHz. Reproducibility of the parameters of a laser with a vertical cavity needed for long-term stability of an atomic clock is considered. The instabilities of atomic CPT-clock obtained for 1 s are 1.2 × 10−11 and 3 × 10−12 for frequencies of 3.4 GHz and 6.8 GHz, respectively.

Optimization of laser radiation for CPT-based miniature frequency standard

К. А. Баранцев, A. N. Litvinov, Evgeniy Popov +1 more

The present work is dedicated to optimization of the laser radiation parameters and optically thickness of the gas cell for improvement of short-term stability of quantum frequency standard based on coherent population trapping effect in the cell with 87Rb working gas and buffer gas. The effects associated with the optical density of the medium are investigated, such as laser spectrum distortion and appearance of the light shifts of the coherent population trapping resonance due to different absorption of frequency components.

Spectroscopy of coherent population trapping with a light source based on a femtosecond laser

Alexey V. Akimov, N. Kolachevsky, А. В. Соколов +5 more

A new source of the bichromatic laser field with a stable mean value of the difference frequency is used to study coherent population trapping (CPT). A high stability of the difference phase of the fields of the radiation source is achieved by phase locking the radiation frequency of two semiconductor lasers to longitudinal modes of a femtosecond laser. The first experimental results on the spectroscopy of CPT resonances in rubidium are presented. The possibility of using the new method for spectroscopy of CPT resonances in rare-earth atom vapours is discussed.

All-optical atomic clock based on coherent population trapping in ^85Rb

Mikko Merimaa, Thomas Lindvall, Ilkka Juhani Tittonen +1 more

An all-optical microwave frequency standard based on coherent population trapping (CPT) in 85Rb is developed. The CPT resonances are detected by an ordinary edge-emitting diode laser in a simple optical setup. A buffer-gas mixture is carefully optimized to yield a narrow linewidth and a reduced temperature dependence of the resonance frequency. With the developed system we are able to measure ultranarrow optically induced hyperfine CPT resonances at <20 Hz, which is in good agreement with the linewidth calculated from experimental parameters. The frequency of an RF-signal generator has been stabilized to the CPT resonance between the two mF=0 magnetic sublevels. The relative frequency stability (square root of Allan variance) follows a slope of 3.5×10-11 τ-1/2(1 s<τ<2000 s). The best stability of 6.4×10-13 is reached at an integration time of τ=2000 s. This stability is sufficient for many high-precision applications. Frequency-shift measurements were made to evaluate the frequency dependencies on the operation parameters.

Active Suppression of the Light Shift in an Atomic Clock Based on Coherent Population Trapping in 87Rb Vapor Using the Phase Jump Technique

Daba A. Radnatarov, Sergey M Kobtsev, Valeriy Andryushkov +4 more

The active suppression of light shift of the reference coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance in87Rb vapor to improve the long-term stability of compact atomic clocks has been demonstrated experimentally. The approach is based on the phase jump technique used to synthesize an error signal, which is proportional to the light shift of the CPT resonance, from an optical transmission signal. The use of this error signal in an additional feedback loop allows one to stabilize the amplitude of a microwave signal for the phase modulation of laser radiation near a value at which the light shift of the CPT resonance is absent. This technique has made it possible to reduce the long-term instability of CPT atomic clocks in our experiments by a factor of 15 at an integration time of 10 000–20 000 s.
