The Uncertainty Principle with Fourier Transform Derivatives

Abstract

Abstract The classical uncertainty principle works for smooth signal functions. In our work, we apply the Fourier transform derivatives for the study of uncertainty principle, so that the smoothness condition for the signal functions is not required. At first, the amplitude and phase derivatives of vector-valued signal functions based on the Fourier transform are defined. Then we obtain a strong form of the uncertainty principle.

A Generalized Uncertainty Principle Involving Fractional Fourier Transform

Marni Rezki, Mawardi Bahri, Muhammad Zakir

It is well known that the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) is a non-trivial generalization of the classical Fourier transform. This transform has been extensively utilized in signal analysis and image processing. The uncertainty principle is one of the fundamental results related to the FrFT. In the present paper, we first propose the different method in proving a variant of Heisenberg uncertainty principles associated with the FrFT. This method combines the Heisenberg-type uncertainty principle pertaining to the FrFT and the additive property of the FrFT. We then provide an alternative proof of the logarithmic inequality for the FRFT and find that this result differs slightly that in the literature. Finally, we explicitly expand the variant of Heisenberg uncertainty principle to a more general case.

Fractional fourier transform: A variant of Heisenberg uncertainty principle, weighted uncertainty inequality and application

Mawardi Bahri

The focus of this article is to propose two different versions of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle related to the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT). The first version is directly derived using the basic connection between the traditional Fourier transform (FT) and the FrFT, and the second is derived by exploiting time differentiation property and Parseval’s formula for the FrFT. In addition, a weighted uncertainty inequality related to this transformation is investigated. As a simple illustration of the use of the obtained results, we design the fractional characteristic function. An inequality describing the relation between the probability density function and its fractional characteristic function is presented.

Uncertainty principles invariant under the fractional Fourier transform

David Mustard

Abstract Uncertainty principles like Heisenberg's assert an inequality obeyed by some measure of joint uncertainty associated with a function and its Fourier transform. The more groups under which that measure is invariant, the more that measure represents an intrinsic property of the underlying object represented by the given function. The Fourier transform is imbedded in a continuous group of operators, the fractional Fourier transforms, but the Heisenberg measure of overall spread turns out not to be invariant under that group. A new family is developed of measures that are invariant under the group of fractional Fourier transforms and that obey associated uncertainty principles. The first member corresponds to Heisenberg's measure but is generally smaller than his although equal to it in special cases.
