Abstract

The dependence of the quantum efficiency of the single photon detector as a function of the average number of photons in the laser pulse is investigated. A method of estimation of quantum efficiency of a single photon detector in the operating mode of a quantum key distribution system operating according to the BB84 protocol is proposed. On the basis of an academic installation of the key quantum distribution system EMQOS 1.0 of the company QRate the experimental researches are executed and dependences of quantum efficiency of the detector of single photons from an average number of photons falling on the detector at various lengths of pulse sequences are received. Practical recommendations are given for the use of the proposed technique to estimate the quantum efficiency of single photon detectors.

Quantum key distribution in single-photon communication system

Denis B. Tretyakov, A. V. Kolyako, A. S. Pleshkov +3 more

This paper presents a brief review of experimental studies in quantum cryptography and quantum key distribution by single photons in atmospheric and fiber-optic quantum communication channels. Two experimental setups for quantum key distribution developed at the Rzhanov Institute of Semiconductor Physics SB RAS are described. The dependence of the quantum key distribution rate on the average number of photons μ in the laser pulse was studied. For μ > 0.3, there is a discrepancy between theory and experiment. The reasons for this are, first, the nonzero probability of multiphoton pulses occurring in quantum transmission and counted as single photons by single-photon detectors and, second, the rejection of the cases where several single-photon detectors click simultaneously in quantum key sifting because the measurement result is not determined in these cases.

Secrecy of quantum key distribution with passive basis choice and detection efficiency mismatch

Egor I. Ivchenko, Anton Sergeevich Trushechkin, A. V. Khmelev +1 more

Subject of study. The effect of different quantum efficiencies of single-photon detectors in quantum key distribution (QKD) systems implementing the BB84 protocol with passive basis choice is investigated. Aim of study. The aim of this study is to determine the secret key generation rate and security of the final key in quantum cryptography systems as functions of detector efficiency mismatch. Additionally, an analytical equation is derived for estimating the secret key generation rate in quantum communication systems with passive basis choice while accounting for different detector efficiencies. Method. The secret key is calculated by dividing the received measurement data according to the measurement bases, followed by performing separate post-processing for each dataset, and finally summing the resulting estimates of the secret key. Main results. An analytical method for estimating the secret key generation rate in systems with passive basis choice and mismatched detector efficiencies is developed. A satellite-to-ground quantum communication channel is modeled using the parameters of the Zvenigorod Observatory in Russia. The proposed theory for accounting for the detector efficiency mismatch is applied to a model of a satellite QKD system, and the determined length of the secret key generated during a single communication session with the satellite is found to be 300 kbit. Practical significance. The obtained results account for the effect of detector efficiency mismatch when estimating the length of the secret key in QKD systems, thereby increasing their reliability in practical implementations.

A. V. Kolyako, Igor G. Neizvestny, V. L. Kurochkin

This work reports on the results of experimental investigations bit rate of quantum key distribution on a setup designed for quantum cryptography with single photons. Silicon avalanche photodiodes (C30902S) serve as single-photon detectors. The quantum key is transmitted with pulsed semiconductor lasers by coding polarization states of photons in two alternative nonorthogonal bases over free space.

Kai-guo Huang

Analyzed how did the fiber length, the attenuation and the average photon number of the pulse emitted by the single photon source affect the receive efficiency in the fiber channel quantum key distribution system based on the BB84 protocol.A theoretic model relative to the system was represented. It was shown by the emulation that the more average photon number was, the higher efficiency receiver would be, and the final key rate would be higher.
