Abstract

We propose a scheme to generate nonreciprocal photon blockade in a stationary whispering gallery microresonator system based on two physical mechanisms. One of the two mechanisms is inspired by recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett.128, 083604 (2022)10.1103/PhysRevLett.128.083604], where the quantum squeezing caused by parametric interaction not only shifts the optical frequency of propagating mode but also enhances its optomechanical coupling, resulting in a nonreciprocal conventional photon blockade phenomenon. On the other hand, we also give another mechanism to generate stronger nonreciprocity of photon correlation according to the destructive quantum interference. Comparing these two strategies, the required nonlinear strength of parametric interaction in the second one is smaller, and the broadband squeezed vacuum field used to eliminate thermalization noise is no longer needed. All analyses and optimal parameter relations are further verified by numerically simulating the quantum master equation. Our proposed scheme opens a new avenue for achieving the nonreciprocal single photon source without stringent requirements, which may have critical applications in quantum communication, quantum information processing, and topological photonics.

Phase-modulated nonreciprocal photon blockade and transmission via optomechanically induced Kerr nonlinearity

Ning Yuan, Shiyan Li, Nan Wang +2 more

We propose a scheme for implementing nonreciprocal transmission and a nonreciprocal photon blockade (PB) in a whispering-gallery-mode optomechanical resonator. By decoupling the mechanical degree of freedom under the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, the system is reduced to one incorporating Kerr-type nonlinearities induced by optomechanical coupling, including self-Kerr nonlinearities of the clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) modes and cross-Kerr nonlinearity between these two modes, thereby strong nonreciprocal PB and transmission can be implemented. We demonstrate that the nonreciprocal PB and transmission are sensitive to the relative phase $\ensuremath{\theta}$ between CW and CCW modes, allowing for switching between reciprocity and nonreciprocity of PB and transmission through engineering the relative phase of external driving lasers. Numerical results obtained with experimental parameters validate the feasibility of achieving perfect nonreciprocal PB and transmission. Our paper presents a viable mechanism for the implementation of perfect nonreciprocal PB and transmission, along with a versatile approach of phase modulation, which holds great promise in serving as a chiral single-photon source in unidirectional quantum communications based on quantum nonreciprocal devices.

Enhanced photon blockade in a parametrically amplified whispering-gallery-mode microresonator coupled to a two-level system

施振刚, 宋克慧

Abstract We propose a method to enhance photon blockade in a bimodal whispering-gallery-mode microresonator coupled to a polarized two-level system. In our approach, dipole coupling and mode coupling construct an anharmonic energy spectrum, while the parametric amplification field enhances the destructive quantum interference for two-photon excitation. This approach enables one-photon resonance and destructive quantum interference conditions to be simultaneously satisfied. In the weak driving limit, analytical expressions for both the conventional and unconventional photon blockade conditions are derived using the wavefunction approach. The approximate analytical results are validated by full numerical simulations based on the master equation. The blockade mode exhibits high photon purity without compromising brightness across a broad range of dipole-coupling strengths. Our findings present a promising route to enhancing photon blockade and provide valuable guidance for the design of integrated on-chip single-photon sources.

Simultaneous nonreciprocal photon blockade via directional parametric amplification

Wei Zhang, Rui Hou, Tie Wang +3 more

We propose a scheme to achieve the simultaneous nonreciprocal photon blockade of two microring resonators in an all-optical system without any rotating parts. By unidirectionally parametrically pumping a ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$-nonlinear resonator with a classical coherent field, the counterclockwise mode in the resonator is exposed to the parametric amplification process when a forward signal field is input in another resonator, but not the case for a backward signal field. This leads to different quantum interference effects among distinct excitation paths for two optical modes, which is the essential reason for simultaneous nonreciprocal photon blockade. We analytically give the optimal parameter conditions to achieve simultaneous strong photon blockade with the parametric amplification. Furthermore, the nonreciprocity is simultaneously enhanced through tuning the amplitude of input signal. Our work provides an avenue to realize simultaneous nonreciprocal single-photon devices without moving parts and may have potential applications in many-body quantum information processing and quantum communication.

Tunable nonreciprocal photon correlations induced by directional quantum squeezing

Cai‐Peng Shen, Jia‐Qiang Chen, Xue‐Feng Pan +5 more

We investigate nonreciprocal photon correlations in coupled microring resonators with directional quantum squeezing (quantum parametric amplification). We show that the degeneracy of two whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) in a microring resonator are broken by applying parametric amplification to one of the WGMs, which makes tunable chiral photon-qubit coupling and chiral photon hopping between two resonators feasible. Selecting optimal quantum squeezing strength, we predict the appearance of nonreciprocal unconventional photon blockade resulting from the interferences among different photon transition-dissipative paths both analytically and numerically. Moreover, flexible conversion between photon bunching and antibunching can be easily realized in a wide range of parameter regimes by modulating the quantum squeezing field. This work provides an alternative way for tunable nonreciprocal photon coherence manipulations in chiral quantum science and technologies.

Photon blockade by enhancing coupling via a nonlinear medium

Jin-Song Liu, Junya Yang, Hongyu Liu +1 more

A significantly low value of the single-photon coupling constant is a major challenge in the creation of a single-photon source via photon blockade. Here, we propose a photon blockade scheme composed of a weakly second-order nonlinear medium with an optical parametric amplification in a low-frequency cavity. Unlike the traditional weakly coupled system, the effective coupling strength in the proposed scheme can be significantly higher than the decay rate of the cavity mode. This can be achieved by adjusting the squeezing parameter even if the original coupling strength is weak. The thermal noise of the squeezed cavity mode can be suppressed by a squeezed vacuum field. Using a probability amplitude method, we obtain the optimal condition of photon blockade in the steady-state. By solving the master equation numerically in the steady-state, a strong photon antibunching effect that is consistent with the optimal conditions can be obtained in the cavity with low frequency. Besides, the photon blockade phenomenon and cross-correlation of two cavities can be significantly enhanced under a specific squeezing parameter. Our results may be useful for future studies on the characteristics of photon statistics.

Nonreciprocal photon blockade in a spinning microwave magnomechanical system through kerr-magnon and optical parametric amplifier

S. K. Singh, Mohamed Amazioug, Jia-Xin Peng +3 more

Unconventional quantum antibunching, arising from quantum interference effects, represents a notable form of quantum correlation that has attracted significant attention for its ability to generate high-quality single-quantum sources. In this work, we propose a scheme to achieve and actively control strong photon blockade in a spinning microwave magnomechanical system by leveraging the combined nonlinear effects of Kerr-induced magnon interactions and an optical parametric amplifier. By exploiting the Sagnac-Fizeau shift, we establish nonreciprocal photon blockade and verify this effect through a combination of analytical modelling and numerical simulations. To gain intuitive insight into the underlying nonreciprocity, we approximate the equal-time second-order correlation function using the analytical solution of the Schrödinger equation. This analytical result is then compared with the full numerical solution derived from the Lindblad master equation. The influences of thermal noise, the probe field amplitude, and the magnetic-dipole coupling strength are investigated within the constraints of the weak-coupling regime. The system's nonclassicality is characterized using the Mandel parameter, complemented by an analysis of the time evolution of the second-order correlation function. Our work provides a pathway for realizing nonreciprocal photon blockade in a nonlinear spinning microwave magnomechanical system.
