Abstract

The sensitivity and bandwidth (BW) as the primary criteria of spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometer (AM) are closely related to the transverse relaxation rate of atomic ensemble. In this study, we show an effective method for transverse relaxation rate measurement drawing on the golden Section algorithm. With no requirement of offline fitting, the measuring time of this method is only 7 s. This is especially advantageous for reducing measurement errors due to the drifts of spatial magnetic field and light intensity and using multiple measurements to better monitor the performance of magnetometers. Moreover, the reset after measuring is optimized as the sensitive axis magnetic field correction, ensuring the integrity of measurement while improving the accuracy of magnetic compensation. Furthermore, we find that the acquired experimental data using this method can be adopted for the evaluation of magnetic field compensation performance and the monitoring of magnetic anomaly states. This determination method for transverse relaxation rate is anticipated to play a greater important role in multichannel SERF AMs’ arrays.

Measurement of Relaxation Mechanism for the Spin-Exchange Relaxation-Free Magnetometer

Jin Peng, An‐Ning Xu, Yiran Yin +1 more

The spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometer (AM) has vital importance in advanced research and has been widely applied in different fields. To improve the sensitivity and robustness of SERF magnetometers, understanding the relaxation mechanism is a significant approach. By controlling the amplitude and direction of external magnetic fields, and switching statuses of the pump and probe laser beam, we measured both the transverse and longitudinal relaxation rate in two experimental methods, respectively, and obtained the Larmor precession frequency, the spin-exchange relaxation rate, the spin-destruction relaxation rate, and the relaxation rate due to collisions between atoms and vapor cell walls. All experimental results are verified with the theoretical calculations. The final longitudinal relaxation rate of our magnetometer is 53 Hz. Furthermore, we measured the sensitivity of our SERF magnetometer reaching 5 fT/Hz1/2 from 5 to 70 Hz after differential measurement with the 3-dB bandwidth of 70 Hz. Our work helps to improve the detection capability of SERF magnetometers, providing performance assurance for searching for exotic spin-dependent interactions and applications, including magnetoencephalograms and magnetocardiograms.

A Performance-Enhanced Closed-Loop SERF Atomic Magnetometer

Ziao Liu, Jianli Li, Xiaoyu Li +3 more

The spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometers (AMs) exhibit ultrahigh sensitivity in ultraweak magnetic field measurement, but their narrow bandwidth constrains the scope of their applications. To increase the bandwidth, magnetic field closed-loop control technology has been introduced into AMs with demonstrated efficacy. However, previous research on closed-loop AMs resulted in signal distortion problems, primarily due to imprecise closed-loop models and control parameters selection without theoretical support. This problem is specifically characterized by the unexpected amplification or reduction of signals at certain frequencies, directly leading to the degradation of the frequency performance of the closed-loop AM, making it unsuitable for applications requiring full-bandwidth measurement. In this study, we proposed a performance-enhanced closed-loop SERF AM, maximizing the bandwidth while ensuring consistent performance across the entire bandwidth. An accurate closed-loop system model was first established. Subsequently, an optimal relationship between the control parameters was proposed according to the eigenvalues of the closed-loop system, and the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was introduced to determine the optimal control parameters. The improved closed-loop system was constructed in a triaxial SERF AM, achieving an average bandwidth of 410 Hz and a sensitivity of 10 fT/Hz$^{{1}/{2}}$in three axes, while ensuring consistent performance across the entire bandwidth. With the proposed method, the optimized control parameters can be obtained only by requiring the frequency response of the open-loop AM, which is convenient and useful for closed-loop AM applications.

Fast extraction of the electron spin-relaxation rate in the SERF magnetometer from a transient response

Yanning Ma, Kaixuan Zhang, Yaoguo Wang +3 more

The magnitude of the electron spin-relaxation rate Rrel of the atomic ensemble directly affects the sensitivity of the spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometer (AM). The rapid and in-situ characterization of Rrel is of great importance. In this work, a fast extraction method of Rrel is proposed with a measurement period shorten to 0.5 s, merely detecting the transient response of SERF AM to a transverse DC excitation magnetic field after switching off the pump beam. In contrast to the conventional methods based on the measurement of the magnetic resonance linewidth, this method circumvents the involvement of optical pumping rate, and enables monitoring Rrel under arbitrary polarization, which is expected to improve the authenticity of Rrel measurement in a more convenient way.

A Novel Measurement Method for Spin Polarization Three Axis Spatial Distribution in Spin-Exchange Relaxation Free Atomic Magnetometer

Xiujie Fang, Jin Chun Li, Yanning Ma +5 more

The measurement of atomic spin polarization distribution in spin-exchange relaxation free (SERF) magnetometer is an important topic for improving the sensitivity and consistency of multi-channel magnetic field measurement applications. A novel spin polarization spatial distribution measurement method is presented based on the transient response of the magnetometer after modulating the pumped light with a chopper. Polarization is obtained by a slow-down factor based on the fast spin-exchange interaction effects. Longitudinal and transverse polarization distributions are measured simultaneously without interrupting the operation of the SERF status. Under different oscillating magnetic fields, the spin polarization is measured at the cell centroid. Residual magnetic field inside the magnetometer is obtained from the linear relationship between the precession frequency and the oscillating magnetic field. The one-dimensional polarization distributions in the x, y, and z axes are measured using a digital micromirror device with a resolution of 0.25 cm. The measurement results conform to the Lambert-Bier absorption law and the Gaussian distribution law. Furthermore, 7 × 7 two-dimensional spatial distribution measurements of polarization on the xy and yz planes are performed. Nonuniformity of 1.04 in the xy plane and 1.82 in the yz plane in the built magnetometer. Compared with other measurement methods, the distribution measurement method proposed is independent of optical depth and suitable for low polarization and high polarization applications. Based on the results of the proposed measurement method of spin polarization spatial distribution, further compensation can improve the application consistency of multi-channel magnetic field measurements and improve the sensitivity of single-channel differential measurements.

Dual-Axis Measurement and Suppression Method for Light Shift Based on a Single-Beam Compact SERF Atomic Magnetometer

Kexuan Miao, Tao Hu, Yan Chang +2 more

The light shift in a spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometer (AM) generated by detuning of circularly polarized pump light, results in deviations of orthogonality measurement and attenuation of magnetometer response. In this paper, we propose and systematically investigate a dual-axis method to suppress light shift based on a self-developed single-beam compact SERF AM capable of measuring magnetic field components along two orthogonal sensitive axes. By sequentially observing the non-sensitive axis response and applying a magnetic field along the pump light direction, the virtual magnetic field induced by light shift is compensated and is rigorously demonstrated as a dominant component in this direction. Experimental results show a significant reduction in crosstalk between the dual sensitive axes, improving accuracy in resonant frequency determination of87Rb atoms and orthogonality evaluation of triaxial coils. Furthermore, the performance of dual-axis measurement in the SERF AM is tested, showing a more notable enhancement than that of single-axis measurement.

Multi-objective Optimization for SERF Atomic Magnetometer using Zero-field Parameter Modulation

Shushan Gao, Bangcheng Han, Zhuo Shi +5 more

The spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometers exhibit ultrahigh sensitivity for the magnetic field measurement, and their performance is further enhanced through zero-field parameter modulation. However, this modulation introduces additional parameter coupling that limits the performance of magnetometers in multi-axis measurement. In this paper, we develop a modified dual-axis output equation based on the nonlinear interaction between the optical pumping rate and modulation field amplitude, mediated by the spin-exchange relaxation and polarization. We employ a multi-objective optimization algorithm incorporating the implicit constraints among these parameters to enable efficient, simultaneous optimization of both the pump rate and modulation amplitude. Experimental results show that under optimal parameters obtained by the algorithm, the dual-axis signal responses improve by approximately 20% and 30% over conventional optimization methods, achieving 2.5 fT/Hz1/2magnetic measurement sensitivities for the y-axis and 4.0 fT/Hz1/2for the x-axis, respectively.
