Abstract

Abstract Starting from many-body theory, the density profile function of ideal Fermi systems in harmonic and delta traps are obtained under the quantum mechanics and thermodynamic statistical physics, respectively. The related thermodynamic properties are analyzed based on the Fermi-Dirac distribution and exact solution of the density profile function.

Quantum ideal gases: Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics

Mark E. Tuckerman

Abstract Chapter 11 presents a statistical mechanical treatment of the quantum ideal gases, i.e., the ideal Boltzmann, fermion, and boson gases. The discussion begins with the microscopic description and the solution of the eigenvalue problem for a quantum ideal gas. It is argued that calculating the partition function is most readily accomplished in the grand canonical ensemble using a second-quantized formulation. When the particles are distinguishable, the equation of state is identical to that of a classical ideal gas. For fermions and bosons, however, the problem of computing thermodynamic properties is significantly more complex and can only be solved exactly in certain limits. Away from these limits approximations are needed and are discussed in detail. The relevant distributions - the Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein distributions are derived. The local density approximation of density functional theory is derived for the ideal electron gas. For the ideal boson gas, the phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation is discussed

ON THE DERIVATION OF THERMODYNAMIC QUANTITIES OF IDEAL FERMI GAS IN HARMONIC TRAP

Pham Nguyen Thanh Vinh

In this paper, we provide comprehensive study of the thermodynamic quantities of the ideal Fermi gas confined in a three-dimensional harmonic trap by using the properties of Fermi – Dirac integral function both analytically and numerically. The dependences of the chemical potential, total energy and heat capacity on the temperature are obtained via the appropriately approximated analytic formulae. Afterwards, the results are compared with the exact numerical ones in order to evaluate the applicability of these formulae.

Fermi Gas in the Harmonic Trap

Лев П. Питаевский, S. Stringari

Abstract This chapter deals with Fermi gases confined in harmonic traps. After offering a reminder of the properties of the harmonically trapped ideal Fermi gas, the chapter focuses on the effect of interactions, employing the local density approximation to calculate the density profiles and the momentum along the BCS–BEC crossover and comparing theoretical predictions with experiments.

Thermodynamics of multi-component Fermi vapours

Luca Salasnich, Beatrice Pozzi, Alberto Parola +1 more

We study the thermodynamical properties of Fermi vapours confined in a harmonic external potential. In the case of the ideal Fermi gas, we compare exact density profiles with their semiclassical approximation in the conditions of recent experiments. Then, we consider the phase separation of a multi-component Fermi vapour. In particular, we analyse the phase separation as a function of temperature, number of particles and scattering length. Finally, we discuss the effect of rotation on the stability and thermodynamics of the trapped vapours.

Theory of Bose Systems in Elongated Traps

正人 大矢

We consider a 3D Bose gas in a elongated cylindrical harmonic trap and find the density profiles for 3D cigar and 1D mean field regimes. In addition, beyond the scope of the mean field behavior, expressions of the wave functions and density profiles of two, three and N-body systems are obtained for a 1D δ-interacting Bose gas trapped in a harmonic potential.
