Abstract

We consider a 3D Bose gas in a elongated cylindrical harmonic trap and find the density profiles for 3D cigar and 1D mean field regimes. In addition, beyond the scope of the mean field behavior, expressions of the wave functions and density profiles of two, three and N-body systems are obtained for a 1D δ-interacting Bose gas trapped in a harmonic potential.

Hydrodynamic modes of a one-dimensional trapped Bose gas

Jean-Noël Fuchs, X. Leyronas, R. Combescot

We consider two regimes where a trapped Bose gas behaves as a one-dimensional (1D) system. In the first one the Bose gas is microscopically described by 3D mean-field theory, but the trap is so elongated that it behaves as a 1D gas with respect to low-frequency collective modes. In the second regime we assume that the 1D gas is truly 1D and that it is properly described by the Lieb-Liniger model. In both regimes we find the frequency of the lowest compressional mode by solving the hydrodynamic equations. This is done by making use of a method which allows us to find analytical or quasianalytical solutions of these equations for a large class of models approaching very closely the actual equation of state of the Bose gas. We find an excellent agreement with the recent results of Menotti and Stringari obtained from a sum-rule approach.

One-Dimensional Bosons in Three-Dimensional Traps

Élliott H. Lieb, Robert Seiringer, Jakob Yngvason

Recent experimental and theoretical work has indicated conditions in which a trapped, low density Bose gas ought to behave like the 1D delta-function Bose gas solved by Lieb and Liniger. Up until now, the theoretical arguments have been based on variational/perturbative ideas or numerical investigations. There are four parameters: density, transverse and longitudinal dimensions, and scattering length. In this paper we explicate five parameter regions in which various types of 1D or 3D behavior occur in the ground state. Our treatment is based on a rigorous analysis of the many-body Schrödinger equation.

THE IMPACT OF INTERACTION ON BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATION OF ULTRACOLD ATOMIC GASES IN TRAPPED POTENTIALS

ALEM MEBRAHATU, Seid Nigatu Fentaw

In this paper, we discuss theoretically the behavior of ideal Bose-Einstein gases in a 3D box and in a harmonic trap. We make use of the mean filed theory based on the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation which describes the main features of Bose-Einstein condensation. We investigate and discuss the density profiles and the ground state properties of a trapped condensate confined in harmonic trap. We found out that in an attractive interaction, the gas tends to increase its central density in order to lower the interaction energy.

We consider a one-dimensional system of repulsive δ-interacting bosons trapped in a harmonic potential. For all values of the coupling strength, we derive expressions of the wave functions and ground-state energies of two, three, four-body systems.

Finite temperature correlations and density profiles of an inhomogeneous interacting 1D Bose gas

Karen V. Kheruntsyan, Dimitri M. Gangardt, P. D. Drummond +1 more

We calculate the density profiles and density correlation functions of the one-dimensional Bose gas in a harmonic trap, using the exact finite-temperature solutions for the uniform case, and applying a local density approximation. The results are valid for a trapping potential which is slowly varying relative to a correlation length. They allow a direct experimental test of the transition from the weak coupling Gross-Pitaevskii regime to the strong coupling, \'fermionic\' Tonks-Girardeau regime. We also calculate the average two-particle correlation which characterizes the bulk properties of the sample, and find that it can be well approximated by the value of the local pair correlation in the trap center.

Condensation and quasicondensation in an elongated three-dimensional Bose gas

Michael C. Garrett, Tod M. Wright, Matthew J. Davis

We study the equilibrium correlations of a Bose gas in an elongated three-dimensional harmonic trap using a grand-canonical classical-field method. We focus in particular on the progressive transformation of the gas from the normal phase, through a phase-fluctuating quasicondensate regime to the so-called true-condensate regime, with decreasing temperature. Choosing realistic experimental parameters, we quantify the density fluctuations and phase coherence of the atomic field as functions of the system temperature. We identify the onset of Bose condensation through analysis of both the generalized Binder cumulant appropriate to the inhomogeneous system, and the suppression of the effective many-body $T$ matrix that characterizes interactions between condensate atoms in the finite-temperature field. We find that the system undergoes a second-order transition to condensation near the critical temperature for an ideal Bose gas in the strongly anisotropic three-dimensional geometry but remains in a strongly phase-fluctuating quasicondensate regime until significantly lower temperatures. We characterize the crossover from a quasicondensate to a true condensate by a qualitative change in the form of the nonlocal first-order coherence function of the field and compare our results to those of previous works employing a density-phase Bogoliubov--de Gennes analysis.
