Optical Transistors with Negative Feedback

Abstract

We consider a Fabry-Perot filled with a nonlinear medium. The transmitted (It) and reflected (Ir) intensities are related to the holding or input beam intensity Ih by the Airy formulae: It is assumed that the angle of incidence is sufficiently small (i.e., near normal incidence) to neglect the angular dependence in the Airy function. Two situations have been analysed, depending on whether the reflected beam is fed back into the Fabry-Perot with the same angle of incidence as the holding beam or not. In both cases the reflected beam goes through an attenuator which reduces the intensity by a coefficient α. The coefficient α varies from 0 (no attenuation) to 1 (complete attenuation).

Theory of a lossless nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer

John H. Marburger, F. S. Felber

A Fabry-Perot interferometer filled with a medium whose refractive index depends upon intensity has a multiple-valued transmission-vs-intensity characteristic. When the incident light is circularly polarized, and the nonlinearity is only cubic in the fields, Maxwell's equations may be solved exactly for the plane-parallel resonator field in terms of elliptic functions. An accurate approximate analysis is given for more general cases, including resonators with spherical mirrors and finite beams, where self-focusing is important. The theory is developed to yield design information for operation as an optical switch, "transistor," and power limiter.

Self-reflection in a naive model of nonlinear media

K. D. Lyakhomskaya, P. I. Khadzhi

The optical self-reflection in a naive model of a semi-infinite nonlinear medium is studied theoretically. It is demonstrated that a Fabry-Perot resonator is induced by a propagating wave in the medium if the incident intensity exceeds a critical value. Hysteresis dependences of the reflectivity and the resonator length on the incident intensity are predicted.

Output property of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer

Yanyan Liu, Jun-Bo Wang, Shixiao Le +1 more

This paper discusses the output property of a Fabry-Perot interferometer filled with a nonlinear medium. Because of the optical-field-induced refractive index, the transmissivity across monochromatic beam through the interferometer depends on the distribution of the beam intensity. The output beam is different from the input. As the reflectivity of two mirrors increases, the distinction changes clear, and there is a change close to discontinue.

Input-output characteristics of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot system

Yoshio Nishiyama, Susumu Kurita

We study a Fabry-Perot system with a homogeneously broadened medium of active two-level atoms when monochromatic waves are incident on it from both sides. It is found that the ratio of output intensities at both sides depends on the relative phase between the bilateral incident waves and there are the cases when the output intensities are equal even if the bilateral inputs are different from each other. It is shown that completely absorbed states or emission states are attained for the light of special modes with proper intensity and for suitable population.

Theoretical model for an all-optical control of reflectivity and transmissivity in a Fabry-Perot cavity filled with a quadratic material

Summary form only given. We analytically discuss a nonlinear quadratic regime of second harmonic generation in an optical cavity: a beam at frequency /spl omega/ overlapped with a beam at frequency 2/spl omega/ are incident on the surface of a Fabry-Perot interferometer filled with a quadratic material.
