Abstract

Summary form only given. We analytically discuss a nonlinear quadratic regime of second harmonic generation in an optical cavity: a beam at frequency /spl omega/ overlapped with a beam at frequency 2/spl omega/ are incident on the surface of a Fabry-Perot interferometer filled with a quadratic material.

All-optical switching in a high- Q Fabry–Perot cavity filled with a quadratic material

Giuseppe D’Aguanno, E. Angelillo, C. Sibilia +2 more

A theoretical analysis of the nonlinear quadratic interaction between two monochromatic plane waves at frequencies ω and 2ω in a Fabry–Perot cavity shows that all-optical control of reflectivity and transmissivity of the fundamental beam is possible under suitable conditions. We report all-optical switching of the fundamental beam for cavity lengths that vary from a few micrometers to a few millimeters. Specifically, we show that 100% all-optical switching can occur for a 6-µm cavity when the nonlinear coefficient is not greater than 20 pm/V and the input intensity does not exceed 10 GW/cm2. Our analytical results are obtained without use of the slowly varying envelope approximation and without resort to the undepleted-pump approximation.

Fast induced transmission via a quadratic nonlinear interaction within a microcavity

Crina M. Cojocaru, Jordi Martorell, Ramon A. Vilaseca +1 more

Summary form only given. The enhancement of the light and matter interaction that can be obtained in periodic structures such as 1D photonic crystals or Fabry-Perot microcavities might be best used when the interaction considered is nonlinear. It has been theoretically shown that changes in the effective index of refraction of a dielectric material leading to large changes in reflection or transmission, can be obtained in a periodic array of layers with a /spl chi//sup (3)/ nonlinearity, or in a microcavity filled with a quadratic nonlinear material. We have considered a 43 /spl mu/m thick KTiOPO/sub 4/ crystal sandwiched between two identical mirrors.

Bistability observed in a Fabry–Perot interferometer with quadratic nonlinear medium

B. Wedding, D. Jäger

Bistability due to a second-order dispersive nonlinearity in a Fabry–Perot resonator is studied. The experiments are performed on a nonlinear transmission line resonator. Nonlinear resonance curves, bistability as well as instabilities, and the generation of harmonics are observed. The theoretical treatment of bistability is based upon a nonlinear dispersion relation as derived from an inspection of two interacting harmonics or, in a second approach, of propagating solitons.

Self-pulsing and transients of a Fabry–Perot interferometer with quadratic nonlinear medium

B. Wedding, Armin Gasch, D. Jäger

The dynamic properties of a Fabry–Perot interferometer filled with a material exhibiting second-order dispersive nonlinearity are studied both theoretically and experimentally. The response of the medium is described by an intensity dependent phase constant as derived from self-action effects. Considering two relaxation times, that of the material and that of the cavity, the basic relations for the stability analysis and for the numerical calculations are obtained. Bistability and self-pulsing effects are predicted. Moreover, the transient behavior is characterized by anomalous switching properties like overshoot and alternate switching. The corresponding experiments performed on a nonlinear transmission line resonator confirm the theoretical results. In a final discussion, the relations to the field of nonlinear optics are outlined.
