Output property of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer

Abstract

This paper discusses the output property of a Fabry-Perot interferometer filled with a nonlinear medium. Because of the optical-field-induced refractive index, the transmissivity across monochromatic beam through the interferometer depends on the distribution of the beam intensity. The output beam is different from the input. As the reflectivity of two mirrors increases, the distinction changes clear, and there is a change close to discontinue.

Theory of a lossless nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer

John H. Marburger, F. S. Felber

A Fabry-Perot interferometer filled with a medium whose refractive index depends upon intensity has a multiple-valued transmission-vs-intensity characteristic. When the incident light is circularly polarized, and the nonlinearity is only cubic in the fields, Maxwell's equations may be solved exactly for the plane-parallel resonator field in terms of elliptic functions. An accurate approximate analysis is given for more general cases, including resonators with spherical mirrors and finite beams, where self-focusing is important. The theory is developed to yield design information for operation as an optical switch, "transistor," and power limiter.

Signal Processing With A Nonlinear Fabry-Perot

E. Garmire

In this paper we consider the nonlinear Fabry-Perot and its applications to optical signal and image processing. This paper addresses the signal processing aspects of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer with emphasis on image processing. The device geometry is shown in Figure 1. A thin nonlinear medium, whose refractive index is a function of the light intensity inside the Fabry-Perot is sandwiched between two plane parallel mirrors. The output as a function of input is shown in Fig. 2, for two different values of the difference between the Fabry-Perot low intensity resonance and the incident wavelength. The bistable curve in 2a is the origin of the term optical bistability and makes possible an optical memory, in which the output is a function of the history of the device. The Figure 2b represents a typical nonlinear transfer curve which may be used for signal processing. It can be seen that small changes in the input intensity Ic make large changes in the output intensity.

Optical Bistability from Ferroelectric Fabry-Perot Interferometer

Abdel-Baset M.A. Ibrahim, David Reginald Tilley, Junaidah Osman

We study the nonlinear optical bistability and multistability of a nonlinear ferroelectric (FE) Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer assumed coated with partial dielectric mirrors on its interfaces. The FE material is considered to have an intensity-dependent refractive index where the third order nonlinear susceptibility χ ilmn (3) acts like Kerr coefficient. The nonlinear response of the FE medium is modeled by the Landau-Khalatnikov (LK) dynamical equation. Within a single frequency approximation, the nonlinear wave equation is written in terms of polarization P rather than the electric field E as the dependent variable. The resulting nonlinear polarization equation is numerically integrated across the FP film using the fourth order Runge-Kutta method. The behavior of the resulting polarization and transmission as a function of the field input intensity is investigated.

Nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer as an optical medium for waves traveling parallel to reflecting planes

Yu. I. Balkareǐ, V. B. Sandomirskiǐ

An analysis is made of the propagation of an optical wave parallel to reflecting planes in an extended nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer pumped by a strong wave of the same intensity. It is shown that the nonlinear-optics self-interaction of the first wave changes drastically near certain parts of the main experimental characteristic of the interferometer, which is the dependence of the intensity of the transmitted light on the intensity of the pump wave. The acoustooptic interaction can change similarly in this interferometer.

Input-output characteristics of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot system

Yoshio Nishiyama, Susumu Kurita

We study a Fabry-Perot system with a homogeneously broadened medium of active two-level atoms when monochromatic waves are incident on it from both sides. It is found that the ratio of output intensities at both sides depends on the relative phase between the bilateral incident waves and there are the cases when the output intensities are equal even if the bilateral inputs are different from each other. It is shown that completely absorbed states or emission states are attained for the light of special modes with proper intensity and for suitable population.

Transverse effects under four-wave coupling in the nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer

O. G. Romanov, Alexei L. Tolstik

Specific features of the light-beam transverse structure transformation in the process of four-wave coupling in the Fabry-Perot interferometer with a resonant nonlinearity under conditions of bifurcation of the symmetry breaking and optical bistability are analyzed. The asymmetric regimes of the interaction, characterized by a difference both in the integrated transmission functions of the nonlinear interferometer for two light beams with equal intensities and in the spatial intensity distribution at the exit of the interferometer, are considered.
