Abstract

Nonlinear optical mixing of existing laser frequencies to access portions of the spectrum where lasing action is not easily obtainable is common practice today. Although nonlinear solid-state media are available [1] for frequency conversion from just under 200 nm in the ultraviolet to about a few microns in the infrared, the generation of widely-tunable laser radiation in the mid-to-far infrared and VUV regions typically requires four-frequency mixing in atomic vapors. In the past, frequency conversion in atomic vapors suffered from poor conversion efficiencies due to the small magnitude of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility and the difficulty in phasematching. We demonstrate a method [2] for performing four-frequency mixing which overcomes both of these shortcomings, allowing efficient frequency conversion with moderate pump intensities.

Tunable Resonant Enhancement in Nonlinear Optical Frequency Mixing

Arlee V. Smith

The ability to introduce additional resonances in the nonlinear optical susceptibility of a medium by the injection of an additional radiation field is an attractive possibility from the standpoint of efficient tunable frequency mixing processes in the VUV. The possibility of such processes suggest themselves in previous observations in atomic mercury where an enhancement of several orders of magnitude in the third harmonic generation efficiency has been reported when the input frequency is four-photon resonant with the 6S → 6D transition(1).

Resonant four-wave frequency mixing in the cw regime in sodium vapor

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, A. L. Vysotin, Im Tkhek-De +2 more

An experimental investigation was made of resonant nonlinear four-wave frequency mixing processes involving cw laser radiation in sodium vapor. It was found that, in spite of an increase in absorption, the use of resonant atomic nonlinearities can substantially improve the frequency conversion efficiency in the cw regime. The results of the measurements were compared with the theoretical conclusions. Ultraviolet radiation was generated at the sum frequency ( λ s = 268 nm) with the proportionality factor C = W s / W 1 W 2 W 3 ≈2W −2

Cavity-enhanced frequency up-conversion in rubidium vapour

Rachel F. Offer, Johnathan W. C. Conway, Erling Riis +2 more

Atomic vapours are a versatile tool for studying a wide range of nonlinear phenomena. In particular, quasi-resonant atomic systems allow processes such as electromagnetically induced transparency, fast and slow light, lasing without inversion and four wave mixing (FWM) to be studied at low light intensities. The resonant enhancement of FWM in a rubidium vapour is such that it can be used for efficient frequency up-conversion of near-infrared light (780 and 776 nm) to blue light (420 nm) [1-4].

Generation of continuously tunable coherent vacuum-ultraviolet radiation in Cd vapor

Kenzo Miyazaki, Hirofumi Sakai, Takuzo Sato

Continuously tunable coherent vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) radiation has been generated in the 128.7-135.3-nm region by two-photon resonant four-wave mixing in Cd vapor. The generated VUV has no spectral structure over the tuning range and indicates that Cd vapor is an efficient nonlinear medium for frequency conversion.

We demonstrate efficient, pulsed, gas-phase, nonlinear frequency conversion in a quadruply resonant, double- Lambda system and, simultaneously, verify theoretical predictions of Rabi-frequency matching unique to absorbing nonlinear media. This system is used to up-convert ultraviolet light at 233 nm to the vacuum ultraviolet at 186 nm in atomic Pb vapor with small-signal conversion efficiencies exceeding 30% and with modest atomic density-length (NL) products (scale 10(14) cm(-2)) and optical power densities (10-100 kW/cm(2)).

Efficient Nonlinear Frequency Conversion with Maximal Atomic Coherence

Maneesh Jain, Hui Xia, G. Y. Yin +2 more

We demonstrate efficient nonlinear frequency conversion in atomic Pb vapor under conditions where the linear susceptibility and the effective nonlinear susceptibility are of the same order. This is accomplished by using electromagnetically induced transparency to prepare a near-maximal atomic coherence on a Raman transition. This strongly driven transition is used to convert an intense laser beam from 425 to 293 nm with an efficiency of $\ensuremath{\sim}40%$.
