Abstract

Experimental observation of one dimensional (1D) and two dimensional (2D) bright and dark spatial soliton propagation has been reported in photorefractive media [1,2]. The experiments were performed under externally applied dc field, which clearly sets some particular direction in the plane perpendicular to the axis of soliton propagation. In this paper we present experimental results on the interferometric analysis of the photoinduced phase changes produced by a 1D dark stripe and a 2D dark circular spot intensity distributions These kind ot intensity distributions are typical for dark spatial soliton generation.

Change in the refractive index of a photorefractive crystal during formation of a spatially screened soliton

S. A. Asselborn, Наталия Дмитриевна Кундикова, Igor' V Novikov

A change in the refractive index of a photorefractive barium-sodium niobate crystal in an alternating electric field during the propagation of intensity-modulated coherent radiation in it is studied. It is shown experimentally that a change in the refractive index in the soliton regime in a photorefractive crystal with a small nonlocal response is independent of the external-field amplitude and intensity-modulation depth.

Photorefractive Spatial Dark-Soliton Stripes in LiNbO 3 :Fe Crystal and Their Application

We observed the photorefractive spatial dark-soliton stripes in LiNbO 3 :Fe crystal, and demonstrate the planar waveguide property of refractive index profile induced by these spatial dark-soliton stripes. We suggest a new mothed to form the planar waveguide utilizing the grating fixing technique.

Role of the local response of a photorefractive medium in the formation of a spatial screened soliton

S. A. Asselborn, Наталия Дмитриевна Кундикова, I V Novikov

The propagation of intensity-modulated laser radiation in a barium—sodium niobate crystal is studied in an external electric field. The possibility of controlling a nonlinear local response of the crystal is demonstrated. It is shown experimentally that the conditions of formation of a one-dimensional spatial soliton can be changed by varying the nonlinear response of the crystal.

Dark spatial solitons in semiconductor microcavities

Yevgeniya Larionova, Carl O. Weiss

This study reports the characteristics of dark solitons different from bright solitons. A striking feature of dark solitons observed in this work is a reflectivity higher than 1 at the center of the soliton. The reflectivity higher than 1 results because the soliton collects energy from its surrounding. As has been predicted for bright solitons this constitutes an optical amplification mechanism worthwhile considering for technical applications. Results show that in addition to the differential gain predicted for bright solitons, the dark solitons experimentally observed permit "DC gain", i.e. the reflected intensity is higher than the incident intensity. Thus dark solitons show "absolute" gain.
