Abstract

A generalization of the calculation of the formation of ghost images in the course of backward four-photon mixing to the real situation of non-planar spatially limited pumping, which has a Gaussian profile of the fundamental laser mode, is developed, taking into account the specifics of the formation of phantom images. Computer images have been obtained that make it possible to estimate the spatial resolution of the systems. A relatively simple equivalent scheme for describing the process is proposed, which shows that the effect of diffraction in nonlinear systems is similar to its role in ordinary linear optics with a limited aperture. A fiber-optic version of the formation of ghost images is proposed, suitable for the study of hard-to-reach cavities and organs of the human body, which allow the introduction of a thin fiber bundle there.

GHOST IMAGES

Aleksandr V. Belinsky, V. V. Vasilkov

A new type of optical imaging is described, which has undoubted advantages in certain applications in comparison with traditional optical methods. The use of nonlinear optical quantum processes makes it possible to obtain entangled photon pairs rigidly correlated in space and time in the course of spontaneous parametric three-photon scattering and counter-propagating four-photon mixing. This correlation can be used to construct ghost images. A fiber-optic version of the formation of phantom images is also described, which is suitable for the study of hard-to-reach cavities and organs of the human body, which allow the introduction of a thin fiber-optic bundle.

Diffraction Structure of Quantum Ghost Images

Dmitriy A. Balakin, Aleksandr V. Belinsky

Abstract We consider the effect of diffraction due to the finite width of pump radiation illuminating a nonlinear crystal, in which spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) occurs, on the spatial resolution of ghost images. We propose the required formal relations and the computational algorithm and perform numerical simulation with account for the influence of this distorting factor on the quality of ghost images.

Control of a quantum ghost image by spatial pumping phase modulation

Dmitriy A. Balakin, Alexander V. Belinsky

We analyze the influence of diffraction caused by finite width of the pumping in quantum ghost imaging on the spatial resolution of produced ghost images. Following the necessary formal relations, we propose an algorithm for modeling and perform computer modeling. New variants of ghost imaging setups with spatial modulation of pumping phase are proposed. Their advantages are shown, and estimates of imaging resolution are provided.

Frequency conversion of coherent images by thin and volume dynamic holograms

Omar A. Ormachea, O. G. Romanov, Alexei L. Tolstik +3 more

One of the main advances of dynamical holography is the possibility to operate with coherent images in real-time experimental situation. Non-degenerate four-wave mixing has some advantages among different holographic methods because it gives the possibility to perform visualization of infra-red images or to convert visible radiation into ultra-violet region. In the work we study different schemes of frequency conversion of coherent images by thin and volume dynamic holograms nonlinearly formed in multilevel resonance media in conditions of non-degenerate four-wave mixing. The theoretical model of dynamic gratings formation in dye solutions based on coupled-wave equations has been developed. Experimental realization of frequency conversion of coherent images from infra-red to the visible and between different wavelengths of visible region has been performed. It has been shown that the criterion of hologram thickness is dependent on the optical density of medium and intensity of input radiation. The diffraction efficiency of dynamic gratings has been measured in conditions of optical bleaching and in the mode of strong absorption, enabling recording of thin gratings.
