Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes With Girth at Least Eight Based on Disjoint Difference Sets

Abstract

A novel relationship between disjoint difference sets (DDS) and QC-LDPC codes without cycles of length up to six is established. Based on DDS with two sets, a class of column-weight-four QC-LDPC codes is constructed with girth at least eight. In the literature there are several explicit or semi-random methods which can yield column-weight-four QC-LDPC codes without 4-cycles and 6-cycles. Compared with these existing methods, the new DDS-based method is able to offer QC-LDPC codes with desirable decoding performance and flexible circulant sizes, and at the same time able to provide a large number of non-equivalent candidate codes. Moreover, by employing DDS with only one set, a class of column-weight-three QC-LDPC codes is constructed with short lengths and with girth at least eight.

On Disjoint Difference Sets and Their Associated QC-LDPC Codes with Large Girth

Guohua Zhang, Mengdi Ni, Yi Fang

The disjoint difference set (DDS) has been utilized in recent years to construct quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes without small cycles. However, the existing DDS-based QC-LDPC codes have no all-zero circulants, which limits the decoding performance of such codes to some extent. In this paper, two new types of DDS-based QC-LDPC codes are proposed, which contain all-zero circulants and possess girth at least eight and girth at least ten, respectively. Numerical simulations show that the new codes have good performance in AWGN channels. Besides, a new result on existence for DDSs and two novel deterministic constructions for DDSs are put forward.

Deterministic Girth-Eight QC-LDPC Codes with Large Column Weight

Jianhua Zhang, Guohua Zhang

For any row weight L, several novel classes of (J = 5, L) and (J = 6, L) quasi-cyclic LDPC codes are deterministically constructed with girth eight. From these results, it is proved that (5, L) QC-LDPC codes with girth eight exist for any circulant permutation matrix (CPM) size P ≥ (2L + 3)(L - 1) + 1, and that girth-eight (6, L) QC-LDPC codes exist for any P ≥ 2(L+5)(L-1)+1. The two novel bounds remarkably improve the existing bounds of L2(L-1) + 1 and (L2+1)(L-1)+1, respectively. Moreover, for any column weight J and any row weight L, a construction for (J,L) QC-LDPC codes with girth eight is also proposed. This is the first deterministic and systematic construction which can generate girth-eight QC-LDPC codes with J ≥ 7.

Combinatorial design-based quasi-cyclic LDPC codes with girth eight

Sina Vafi, Narges Rezvani Majid

This paper presents a novel regular Quasi-Cyclic (QC) Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes with column-weight three and girth at least eight. These are designed on the basis of combinatorial design in which subsets applied for the construction of circulant matrices are determined by a particular subset. Considering the non-existence of cycles four and six in the structure of the parity check matrix, a bound for their minimum weight is proposed. The simulations conducted confirm that without applying a masking technique, the newly implemented codes have a performance similar to or better than other well-known codes. This is evident in the waterfall region, while their error floor at very low Bit Error Rate (BER) is expected.

Construction of High-Rate Regular Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes Based on Cyclic Difference Families

Hosung Park, Seokbeom Hong, Jong‐Seon No +1 more

For a high-rate case, it is difficult to randomly construct good low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes of short and moderate lengths because their Tanner graphs are prone to have short cycles. Also, the existing high-rate quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes can be constructed only for very restricted code parameters. In this paper, based on special classes of cyclic difference families, we propose a new construction method of high-rate regular QC LDPC codes having parity-check matrices consisting of a single row of circulants with column-weight 3 or 4. The proposed QC LDPC codes can be constructed for various code rates and lengths including the minimum achievable length for given column-weight and design rate under girth 6. It is observed that the parity-check matrices of the proposed QC LDPC codes have full rank for column-weight 3 and just one redundant row for column-weight 4. It is shown that the error correcting performance of the proposed QC LDPC codes of short and moderate lengths is almost the same as that of the existing ones through numerical analysis.

A Construction of High Rate Quasi-Cyclic Regular LDPC Codes from Cyclic Difference Families with Girth 8

M. FUJISAWA, Shojiro Sakata

In this paper we propose a method of constructing quasi-cyclic regular LDPC codes from a cyclic difference family, which is a kind of combinatorial design. The resulting codes have no 4-cycle, i.e. cycles of length four and are defined by a small set of generators of codes with high rate and large code length. In particular, for LDPC codes with column weight three, we clarify the conditions on which they have no 6-cycle and their minimum distances are improved. Finally, we show the performance of the proposed codes with high rates and moderate lengths.

On Existence of Girth-8 QC-LDPC Code with Large Column Weight: Combining Mirror-sequence with Classification Modulo Ten

Guohua Zhang, Xiangya Liu, Jianhua Zhang +1 more

Quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes with large girths play a crucial role in several research and application fields, including channel coding, compressed sensing and distributed storage systems. A major challenge in respect of the code construction is how to obtain such codes with the shortest possible length (or equivalently, the smallest possible circulant size) using algebraic methods instead of search methods. The greatest-common-divisor (GCD) framework we previously proposed has algebraically constructed QC-LDPC codes with column weights of 5 and 6, very short lengths, and a girth of 8. By introducing the concept of a mirror sequence and adopting a new row-regrouping scheme, QC-LDPC codes with column weights of 7 and 8, very short lengths, and a girth of 8 are proposed for arbitrary row weights in this article via an algebraic manner under the GCD framework. Thanks to these novel algebraic methods, the lower bounds (for column weights 7 and 8) on consecutive circulant sizes are both improved by asymptotically about 20%, compared with the existing benchmarks. Furthermore, these new constructions can also offer circulant sizes asymptotically about 25% smaller than the novel bounds.
