Based on an analysis of kinetic processes in the continuous-wave (CW) single-wavelength two-photon pumped Rb-vapor laser (Rb-TPAL), a three-dimensional computational model is established using the rate equation. Based on the application of the model to cavity-enhanced Rb-TPAL [Yuanet al.,Optics Express29, 4858 (2021)], the calculated and measured dependences of the laser power on the pump power show good agreement. We simulate the Rb-TPAL pumped by a high-power CW laser diode and analyze the effects of temperature, vapor cell length, pump waist, vapor cell transmission, and output mirror reflectance on the characteristics of the blue laser. The results suggest that the output power and efficiency of blue laser can be improved by optimizing the above parameters; however, the particles in the
52D5/2level face difficulty to transition to the
62P3/2level, and this limits the further improvement of blue laser efficiency; therefore, an approach is proposed to improve the efficiency of Rb-TPAL. This study can be useful for designing a two-photon pumped alkali metal laser with high-power output.
Abstract : An optically pumped mid-infrared rubidium (Rb) pulsed laser has been demonstrated in a heat pipe along the 62P3/2 - 62S1/2 transition at 2.730 micrometer and the 62P1/2 - 62S1/2 transition at 2.790 micrometer. The bleached limit, slope efficiency, and maximum laser output energy of the mid-IR Rb laser have been shown to scale linearly with increasing Rb density, contrary to prior laser demonstrations. A maximum output energy of 5 nJ per pulse had previously been observed before a rollover occurred in the scaling of output energy with Rb concentration. In this experiment, the maximum laser output energy observed was 100 nJ, with linear scaling to a Rb concentration of 7 x 10 to the 15th power cm-3. A maximum slope efficiency of 1.7 x 0.0001 was observed. Evidence that only a small percentage (2%) of the available pump photons were absorbed at a concentration of 2 x 10 to the 15th power cm-3 and a pump energy of 10 (mu)J. This indicated that there were 20,000 pump photons per Rb atom at a pump energy of 10 mJ, and that the effective laser efficiency was 0.65 percent or higher. The hyperfine structure and absorption spectral profile of the 52S1/2 - 62P1/2 and 52S1/2 - 62P3/2 (blue) pump transitions were studied using a continuous wave (cw) pump source.
The parametric four-wave mixing (4WM) process responsible for the generation of coherent blue light in alkali vapors is a self-seeded process which starts by population inversion and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). Lately, attention has been turned toward frequency up- and down-conversion in alkali vapors, using relatively low pump powers with CW diode lasers. In this Letter, we investigate the interplay between ASE and 4WM in rubidium (Rb) vapors by studying the mid-infrared (mid-IR) radiation emitted in the forward direction at 5.23 μm. We show that the ASE can be suppressed by 4WM in the CW regime. Thus, we demonstrate the generation of coherent mid-IR light at 5.23 μm in hot Rb vapors via parametric 4WM.
