Observation of Noiseless Image Amplification by an Optical Parametric Amplifier

Sang-Kyung Choi, Michael Vasilyev, Prem Kumar

A spatially-broadband optical parametric amplifier is used for image amplification. In the phase-sensitive configuration, we observe a noise figure of −0.1± 0.3dB for a gain of 2.4, which is 2dB lower than the quantum limit for an ideal phase-insensitive amplifier. Image pre-amplification before loss is shown to improve the detected signal-to-noise ratio.

Enhancement of single-photon level signal detection based on phase sensitive amplification strategy

Changchang Zhang, Zhaolu Wang, Hongjun Liu +1 more

Abstract We investigate the ability of phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) to noiselessly amplify the preferred quadrature components of single-photon signals that are limited by phase fluctuations relative to the pump. We present a PSA enhancement strategy that is more realistic for possible experimental realization and is expected to significantly improve the detection of weak signals at the single-photon level and obtain more useful information. Our study shows that with a large PSA gain, proper transmissivity allows both direct and balanced homodyne detections to operate optimally simultaneously, and effectively improves the noise figure degradation owing to the internal losses and non-ideal detection efficiency.

Quantum-enhanced standoff detection using correlated photon pairs

Duncan G. England, Bhashyam Balaji, Benjamin Sussman

We investigate the use of correlated photon pair sources for the improved quantum-level detection of a target in the presence of a noise background. Photon pairs are generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing, one photon from each pair (the herald) is measured locally while the other (the signal) is sent to illuminate the target. Following diffuse reflection from the target, the signal photons are detected by a receiver and nonclassical timing correlations between the signal and herald are measured in the presence of a configurable background noise source. Quantum correlations from the photon pair source can be used to provide an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio when compared to a classical light source of the same intensity.

We show theoretically that weak-value amplification can enhance the signal-to-noise ratio in the presence of noise with long correlation times, in particular for measurements of single-photon-level nonlinearities.
