Abstract

We demonstrate enhanced resolution in image detection by phase-sensitive preamplification. In one-versus-two-target experiment we distinguish otherwise unresolved images with higher probability after such amplification than is possible without amplification.

We study phase-sensitive image pre-amplification versus pumping conditions and number of signal modes. We see image improvement by pre-amplification, and high-spatial-frequency enhancement for “higher-order-pump,” “nonzero-wavevector-mismatch” cases.

Transverse phase amplification of spatially multimode beams can be achieved via phase-sensitive optical parametric amplification. Transverse phase amplification of the signal in the canonical imaging problem can improve imaging resolution beyond the Rayleigh limit.

Phase-sensitive three-wave mixing operated in the deamplification mode can produce angular phase amplification for multimode beams. A detailed analysis of this scheme indicates that super-Rayleigh imaging resolution is expected.

Resolution enhancement of imaging systems by quantum phase amplification

Yanchun Yin, D. French, Igor Jovanovic

A novel quantum phase amplification (QPA) technique is proposed to enhance the spatial resolution of passive imaging systems, without the commensurate increase of the aperture size. The key component of this approach is the production of phase-amplified light, a squeezed state of the electromagnetic field that can be generated in phase-sensitive three-wave mixing (PSTWM). We have established the theoretical basis for QPA using PSTWM and theoretically derived the conditions for the operation of the ubiquitous PSTWM realized by using standard laser technology. In our approach sub-Rayleigh imaging can be explored to perform the super-resolution enhancement of remotely sensed data. We applied the PSTWM to improve the distinguishability of two point sources in several scenarios. In addition, detector segmentation was modeled to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio.

We describe an experimental demonstration of fiber-based optical phase-sensitive amplification for improved detection of correlated single-photon pairs. A measured coincidence gain of 4.5dB provides 3dB improvement in the detection system signal-to-noise ratio.
