Second-Order Interference Effect of Polarized Light Based on Two-Photon Absorption Detection

Wenxuan Hao, Huaibin Zheng, Bin Li +6 more

The two-photon interference effect of polarized light holds significant research importance in quantum optics. Different types of polarized light exhibit distinct interference behaviors, making the systematic study of these behaviors crucial. This paper introduces the concept of the polarization two-photon coherence matrix and provides a theoretical explanation for the differences in two-photon interference phenomena among linear, circular, and elliptically polarized light. Using a polarization Michelson interferometer based on two-photon absorption detection, second-order interference images of circularly polarized and elliptically polarized light were experimentally captured. The differences in these two-photon interference phenomena can be elucidated by visualizing the polarization coherence matrix. Furthermore, this theory was applied to the study of sub-wavelength interference phenomena of circularly polarized light, confirming the universality of the theoretical model and offering new perspectives and tools for the study of quantum optics.

Velocity-like maximum polarization: Irreversibility and quantum measurements

Oleg V Teryaev

The polarization emerging in the subsequent scattering processes can never exceed 1 which corresponds to the fully polarized pure state. This property is shown to be provided by the addition rule similar to that for relativistic velocities never exceeding the speed of light. The cases of spin $1/2$ and 1 are considered. The photon linear polarization in subsequent Thomson scattering processes is monotonically increasing. This directness is shown to be a consequence of spin measurement procedure and may be the particular example of the anticipated relation between quantum measurement and time irreversibility. The emergent polarization may be considered as a case of the opposing time's arrows corresponding to microscopic (spin) and macroscopic (momentum) degrees of freedom, respectively.

Coherent population trapping resonances in Cs atoms excited by elliptically polarized light

K. A. Nasyrov, S. Cartaleva, Nikolay Petrov +4 more

Coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances study in Hanle configuration is reported for different polarizations of the exciting light field, on the ${D}_{2}$ line of Cs atoms. While for linear/circular polarization dip/peak in the fluorescence is registered, in case of elliptical polarization, a complex shape resonance is evidenced experimentally, whose profile strongly depends on the ellipticity of polarization. A theoretical model is proposed and developed, which includes the influence on the resonance of polarization ellipticity, transverse magnetic field, and spatial intensity profile of the laser beam. Good agreement is found between the theoretical and experimental results. The reported results allow one to accomplish more profound than in previous research analysis of the CPT resonances behavior pointing out their sensitivity to the light polarization and power as well as to transverse magnetic fields. The presented study is of general importance for the wide application of the coherent resonances in high resolution spectroscopy and precise measurements. The purity of linear/circular polarization of the light needed in different applications can be estimated implementing the proposed model.
