Abstract

Abstract We discuss the possibility of implementing a universal quantum XOR gate by using two coupled quantum dots subject to external magnetic fields that are parallel and slightly different. We consider this system in two different field configurations. In the first case, parallel external fields with the intensity difference at each spin being proportional to the time‐dependent interaction between the spins. A general exact solution describing this system is presented and analyzed to adjust field parameters. Then we consider parallel fields with intensity difference at each spin being constant and the interaction between the spins switching on and off adiabatically. In both cases we adjust characteristics of the external fields (their intensities and duration) in order to have the parallel pulse adequate for constructing the XOR gate. In order to provide a complete theoretical description of all the cases, we derive relations between the spin interaction, the inter‐dot distance, and the external field.

Two interacting spins in external fields and application to quantum computation

Mario Cesar Baldiotti, Vladislav G. Bagrov, Dmitri M Gitman

We study the four-level-system given by two quantum dots immersed in a time-dependent magnetic field, which are coupled to each other by an effective Heisenberg-type interaction. We describe the construction of the corresponding evolution operator in a special case of different time-dependent parallel external magnetic fields. We find a relation between the external field and the effective interaction function. The obtained results are used to analyze the theoretical implementation of a universal quantum gate.

Two interacting spins in external fields. Four‐level systems

Vladislav G. Bagrov, Mario Cesar Baldiotti, Dmitri M Gitman +1 more

Abstract In the present article, we consider the so‐called two‐spin equation that describes four‐level quantum systems. Recently, these systems attract attention due to their relation to the problem of quantum computation. We study general properties of the two‐spin equation and show that the problem for certain external backgrounds can be identified with the problem of one spin in an appropriate background. This allows one to generate a number of exact solutions for two‐spin equations on the basis of already known exact solutions of the one‐spin equation. Besides, we present some exact solutions for the two‐spin equation with an external background different for each spin but having the same direction. We study the eigenvalue problem for a time‐independent spin interaction and a time‐independent external background. A possible analogue of the Rabi problem for the two‐spin equation is defined. We present its exact solution and demonstrate the existence of magnetic resonances in two specific frequencies, one of them coinciding with the Rabi frequency, and the other depending on the rotating field magnitude. The resonance that corresponds to the second frequency is suppressed with respect to the first one.

Entanglement of two-electron spin states in a double quantum dot

Vladislav G. Bagrov, Dmitri M Gitman, Aleksandr D. Levin +1 more

Recently, an implementation of a universal set of one- and two-quantum-bit gates for quantum computation using spin states of coupled single-electron quantum dots was proposed. It was demonstrated that it is possible to execute a coherent control of a quantum system based on two-electron spin states in a double quantum dot, allowing state preparation, coherent manipulation, and projective readout. This possibility is based on rapid electrical control of the spin exchange interaction. These results motivated us to develop a formal theoretical study of the corresponding model of two coupled spins placed in a magnetic field and subjected to a time-dependent mutual Heisenberg interaction. Using possible exact solutions of the corresponding quantum problem, we study entangling of different separable initial states in this model. It is demonstrated that the entanglement due to a time-dependent Heisenberg interaction is dominating in comparison with the entanglement due to the action of an external magnetic field.

Universal quantum computing with spin and valley states

Niklas Rohling, Guido Burkard

We investigate a two-electron double quantum dot with both spin and valley degrees of freedom as they occur in graphene, carbon nanotubes or silicon and regard the 16-dimensional space with one electron per dot as a four-qubit logic space. In the spin-only case, it is well known that the exchange coupling between the dots combined with arbitrary single-qubit operations is sufficient for universal quantum computation. The presence of valley degeneracy in the electronic band structure alters the form of the exchange coupling and, in general, leads to spin–valley entanglement. Here, we show that universal quantum computation can still be performed by exchange interaction and single-qubit gates in the presence of an additional (valley) degree of freedom. We present an explicit pulse sequence for a spin-only controlled-NOT consisting of the generalized exchange coupling and single-electron spin and valley rotations. We also propose state preparations and projective measurements with the use of adiabatic transitions between states with (1,1) and (0,2) charge distributions similar to the spin-only case, but with the additional requirement of controlling the spin and valley Zeeman energies by an external magnetic field. Finally, we demonstrate a universal two-qubit gate between a spin and a valley qubit, allowing universal gate operations on the combined spin and valley quantum register.

Universal Set of Quantum Gates for Double-Dot Spin Qubits with Fixed Interdot Coupling

Ronald Hanson, Guido Burkard

We propose a set of universal gate operations for the singlet-triplet qubit realized by two-electron spins in a double quantum dot, in the presence of a fixed inhomogeneous magnetic field. All gate operations are achieved by switching the potential offset between the two dots with an electrical bias, and do not require time-dependent control of the tunnel coupling between the dots. We analyze the two-electron dynamics and calculate the effective qubit rotation angle as a function of the applied electric bias. We present explicit gate sequences for single-qubit rotations about two orthogonal axes, and a CNOT gate sequence, completing the universal gate set.
