Abstract

We study the four-level-system given by two quantum dots immersed in a time-dependent magnetic field, which are coupled to each other by an effective Heisenberg-type interaction. We describe the construction of the corresponding evolution operator in a special case of different time-dependent parallel external magnetic fields. We find a relation between the external field and the effective interaction function. The obtained results are used to analyze the theoretical implementation of a universal quantum gate.

Four‐level systems and a universal quantum gate

Mario Cesar Baldiotti, Dmitri M Gitman

Abstract We discuss the possibility of implementing a universal quantum XOR gate by using two coupled quantum dots subject to external magnetic fields that are parallel and slightly different. We consider this system in two different field configurations. In the first case, parallel external fields with the intensity difference at each spin being proportional to the time‐dependent interaction between the spins. A general exact solution describing this system is presented and analyzed to adjust field parameters. Then we consider parallel fields with intensity difference at each spin being constant and the interaction between the spins switching on and off adiabatically. In both cases we adjust characteristics of the external fields (their intensities and duration) in order to have the parallel pulse adequate for constructing the XOR gate. In order to provide a complete theoretical description of all the cases, we derive relations between the spin interaction, the inter‐dot distance, and the external field.

Entanglement of two-electron spin states in a double quantum dot

Vladislav G. Bagrov, Dmitri M Gitman, Aleksandr D. Levin +1 more

Recently, an implementation of a universal set of one- and two-quantum-bit gates for quantum computation using spin states of coupled single-electron quantum dots was proposed. It was demonstrated that it is possible to execute a coherent control of a quantum system based on two-electron spin states in a double quantum dot, allowing state preparation, coherent manipulation, and projective readout. This possibility is based on rapid electrical control of the spin exchange interaction. These results motivated us to develop a formal theoretical study of the corresponding model of two coupled spins placed in a magnetic field and subjected to a time-dependent mutual Heisenberg interaction. Using possible exact solutions of the corresponding quantum problem, we study entangling of different separable initial states in this model. It is demonstrated that the entanglement due to a time-dependent Heisenberg interaction is dominating in comparison with the entanglement due to the action of an external magnetic field.

Two and three coupled spins in magnetic field

Dmitry Gitman, Mario Cesar Baldiotti, Marcelo Meireles dos Santos

We consider three spin systems in the parallel magnetic fields and present some of possible exact solutions. In addition, we discuss an analogue of the Rabi problem for three-spin system. In order to do this, we reduce the problem of three coupled spins, an 8-level system, to a problem of a 3-level system in an effective field. We explicitly construct the evolution operator of the system in two special cases: when the fields and interaction are the same in all the spins but with a arbitrary time-dependence of the fields, and when the spins are subjected to a circular magnetic field (the Rabi problem). Some applications of these results are discussed.

Two Driven Coupled Qubits in a Time Varying Magnetic Field: Exact and Approximate Solutions

E. I. Lashin, Gehad Sadiek, M. Sebawe Abdalla +1 more

We study the dynamics of a two-qubit system coupled through time dependent anisotropic $XYZ$ Heisenberg interaction in presence of a time varying non-uniform external magnetic field. Exact results are presented for the time evolution of the system under certain integrability conditions. Furthermore, the corresponding entanglement of the system is studied for different values of the involved parameters. We found that the time evolution and different properties of entanglement such as amplitude, frequency and profile can be finely tuned by the interplay of the characteristics of the time-dependent magnetic field and exchange coupling. Also we show how the discrete symmetries of the system Hamiltonian, which splits its Hilbert space into two distinct subspaces, can be utilized to deduce the dynamics in one of its two distinct subspaces from the other one. Moreover, approximate results for the time evolution are provided utilizing the rotating wave as well as the perturbation approximations for the special case of either static magnetic field or exchange coupling. We compare the range of validity of the two approximation methods and their effectiveness in treating the considered system and determine their critical parameters.

Two interacting spins in external fields. Four-level systems

Vladislav G. Bagrov, Mario Cesar Baldiotti, Dmitri M Gitman +1 more

In the present article, we consider the so-called two-spin equation that describes four-level quantum systems. Recently, these systems attract attention due to their relation to the problem of quantum computation. We study general properties of the two-spin equation and show that the problem for certain external backgrounds can be identified with the problem of one spin in an appropriate background. This allows one to generate a number of exact solutions for two-spin equations on the basis of already known exact solutions of the one-spin equation. Besides, we present some exact solutions for the two-spin equation with an external background different for each spin but having the same direction. We study the eigenvalue problem for a time-independent spin interaction and a time-independent external background. A possible analogue of the Rabi problem for the two-spin equation is defined. We present its exact solution and demonstrate the existence of magnetic resonances in two specific frequencies, one of them coinciding with the Rabi frequency, and the other depending on the rotating field magnitude. The resonance that corresponds to the second frequency is suppressed with respect to the first one.

Coupled quantum dots as quantum gates

Guido Burkard, Daniel Loss, David Peter Divincenzo

We consider a quantum-gate mechanism based on electron spins in coupled semiconductor quantum dots. Such gates provide a general source of spin entanglement and can be used for quantum computers. We determine the exchange coupling $J$ in the effective Heisenberg model as a function of magnetic $(B)$ and electric fields, and of the interdot distance $a$ within the Heitler-London approximation of molecular physics. This result is refined by using $\mathrm{sp}$ hybridization, and by the Hund-Mulliken molecular-orbit approach, which leads to an extended Hubbard description for the two-dot system that shows a remarkable dependence on $B$ and $a$ due to the long-range Coulomb interaction. We find that the exchange $J$ changes sign at a finite field (leading to a pronounced jump in the magnetization) and then decays exponentially. The magnetization and the spin susceptibilities of the coupled dots are calculated. We show that the dephasing due to nuclear spins in GaAs can be strongly suppressed by dynamical nuclear-spin polarization and/or by magnetic fields.
