Manipulations of cold atoms in a one-dimensional ring lattice

Abstract

The dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional ring optical lattice is related to the interplay of the open system conditions and the initial atomic distribution. The circulation evaluation model based on the relative atomic density on each site is established to analyze the circulation strength under low dissipation. The direction of the circulation due to the symmetry breaking can be manipulated by changing the primary atomic distribution and the number of lattice sites. The effect of the atomic interaction on the atom flow in the optical ring lattice is analyzed to maintain the current interval rotation behavior.

Dynamics of a driven optical lattice with distance-selective dissipation

B. Cui, S. C. Hou, W Wang +1 more

We analyze the dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional driven optical lattice in the presence of distance-selective dissipation. The interplay of on-site interactions, tunneling, external driving and dissipation dominates the feature of the dynamics. Relative atomic density on each site in the lattice and the standard deviation of the relative density are calculated. The effect of the distance-selective dissipation and an external driving on the diffusion of the atoms is analyzed. As a simple example, a BEC in a double-well potential, is analyzed in detail, and the steady state is analytically derived.

Bose–Einstein condensates in rotating ring-shaped lattices: a multimode model

M Nigro, P. Capuzzi, D M Jezek

Abstract We develop a multimode model that describes the dynamics on a rotating Bose–Einstein condensate confined by a ring-shaped optical lattice with large filling numbers. The parameters of the model are obtained as a function of the rotation frequency using full 3D Gross–Pitaevskii simulations. From such numerical calculations, we extract the velocity field induced at each site and analyze the relation and the differences between the phase of the hopping parameter of our model and the Peierls phase. To this end, a detailed discussion of such phases is presented in geometrical terms which takes into account the position of the junctions for different configurations. For circularly symmetric onsite densities a simple analytical relation between the hopping phase and the angular momentum is found for arbitrary number of sites. Finally, we confront the results of the rotating multimode model dynamics with Gross–Pitaevskii simulations finding a perfect agreement.

Bose–Einstein condensation in one-dimensional optical lattices: Bogoliubov’s approximation and beyond

Mohamed K. Al-Sugheir, Mufeed A. Awawdeh, H. B. Ghassib +1 more

Bose–Einstein condensation in a finite one-dimensional atomic Bose gas trapped in an optical lattice is studied within Bogoliubov’s approximation and then beyond this approximation, within the static fluctuation approximation. A Bose–Hubbard model is used to construct the Hamiltonian of the system. The effect of the potential strength on the condensate fraction is explored at different temperatures; so is the effect of temperature on this fraction at different potential strengths. The role of the number of lattice points (the size effect) at constant number density (the filling factor) is examined; so is the effect of the number density on the condensate fraction. The results obtained are compared to other published results wherever possible.

Hartree-Fock Approach for Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensation in One-dimensional Deep Optical Lattice

Azza M. El-Badry, Shemi S.M. Soliman, Mahmoud Salah

In this work, we investigated the thermodynamic behavior of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensation with non-zero interatomic interactions in one-dimensional optical lattice theoretically. Our system is formed by loading three dimensional boson-clouds into 1D optical lattice and subjected to rotate with angular velocity ɷ about the z axis. We employed the semiclassical Hartree-Fock approach to calculate the condensate fraction, critical temperature, entropy and the heat capacity of the system. Thereby, we investigated the effect of the rotation rate, optical potential depth and the interactions parameter on these parameters. The obtained results provide a solid theoretical foundation for the current experiments of rotating interacting Bose-Einstein condensation produced or transferred in optical lattices.

Cold Atoms in Driven Optical Lattices

M. Ayub

The center of mass dynamics of cold atoms and the Bose-Einstein condensate in one dimensional optical lattice is considered both in the absence and in the presence of external forcing. We discuss three situations for matter waves: first, the cold atoms; second, sufficiently dilute condensate where the dynamics are governed by the single particle wave packet dynamics; third, strong interaction regime, where, inter-atomic interaction can no longer be ignored. The analytical formalism developed for the two regimes, namely, deep optical lattice and shallow optical lattice. Parametric dependencies of energy spectrum and classical period, revival time and super revival are explained for the two regimes. The dynamics of condensate in driven optical lattice crystal are analyzed by studying dynamical stability of the condensate. The stability is determined by the dispersion behavior of the condensate excited in driven optical lattice. The recurrence behavior of the condensate close to the nonlinear resonances is analyzed as a function of time for delicate recurrences which take place for instance when lattice is weakly perturbed and robust recurrences which may manifest themselves for sufficiently strong external driving force. The analysis is not only valid for dilute condensate but also applicable for strongly interacting homogeneous condensate provided, the external modulation causes no significant change in density profile of the condensate. We explain parametric dependence of the dynamical recurrence times which can easily be realized in laboratory experiments. In addition, we find a good agreement between the obtained analytical results and numerical calculations. The stability of condensate is also explored in driven optical lattice numerically.
