Abstract

We study the coherent manipulation of quantum spin dynamics via simple analytic solutions for a spin–orbit (SO) coupled ultracold atom held in a driven double well. In the high-frequency regime, we analytically obtain the quasienergies, the Floquet states, and the non-Floquet state of this system. When the system parameters are properly selected, the non-Floquet state reduces to special quantum states of simple forms which can provide a more intuitive understanding of some interesting quantum spin dynamical phenomena, such as the intrawell spin–flipping, the interwell spin-conserving tunneling, and the interwell spin–flipping tunneling. Specially, for the interwell spin–flipping tunneling, we surprisingly find that the selective coherent destruction of tunneling (SCDT) can occur at the anti-crossing (non-collapse) points of quasienergy spectrum, which breaks the conventional understanding that the SCDT is associated with the crossing of quasienergy levels. Further, we reveal the interwell spin–flipping tunneling strongly depends on the initial spin direction and the initial position of the SO-coupled atom. These novel results can be readily tested by the current experimental setups and may be useful for the design of spintronic devices.

Coherent control of spin tunneling in a driven spin–orbit coupled bosonic triple well

Yuxin Luo, Jia Yi, Wenjuan Li +3 more

Abstract We investigate the coherent control of spin tunneling for a spin–orbit (SO) coupled boson trapped in a driven triple well. In the high-frequency limit, the quasienergies of the system are obtained analytically and the fine energy band structures are shown. By regulating the driving parameters, we reveal that the directed spin-flipping or spin-conserving tunneling of an SO-coupled boson occurs along different pathways and in different directions. The analytical results are demonstrated by numerical simulations and good agreements are found. Further, an interesting scheme of quantum spin tunneling switch with or without spin-flipping is presented. The results may have potential applications in the design of spintronic devices.

Exact solutions for a spin-orbit coupled ultracold atom held in a driven double well

Yunrong Luo, Xuemei Wang, Jia Yi +4 more

Abstract Exact solutions for spin-orbit (SO)-coupled cold atomic systems are very important and rare in physics. In this paper, we propose a simple method of combined modulations to generate the exactly analytic solutions for a single SO-coupled ultracold atom held in a driven double well. For the cases of synchronous combined modulations and the spin-conserving tunneling, we obtain the generally accurate solutions of this system respectively. For the case of spin-flipping tunneling under asynchronous combined modulations, we get the specially exact solutions in simple form when the driving parameters are appropriately chosen. Based on these obtained exact solutions, we reveal some intriguing quantum spin dynamical phenomena, for instance, the arbitrary coherent population transfer with and/or without spin-flipping, the controlled coherent population conservation, and the controlled coherent population inversion. The results may provide a possibility for generating the accurate quantum entangled states and the exact control of spin dynamics for a SO-coupled ultracold atomic system.

Stabilizing correlated pair tunneling of spin-orbit-coupled bosons in a non-Hermitian driven double well

Miaoqian Lu, Xinzhou Guan, Mohan Xia +4 more

We present an analytical framework for stabilizing second-order correlated tunneling of two spin-orbit-coupled bosons in a periodically driven non-Hermitian double-well potential. By combining Floquet theory with multiple-scale asymptotic analysis, we derive effective second-order dynamics and exact quasienergy spectra in the strongly interacting regime. Our analysis reveals distinct stability mechanisms for three fundamental tunneling channels: interwell spin-conserving, interwell spin-flipping, and intrawell spin-flipping. For balanced gain and loss, we identify discrete, well-defined parameter regions where stable pair tunneling emerges, with the spin-flipping channel exhibiting a characteristic symmetry absent in its spin-conserving counterpart. Under unbalanced gain-loss conditions, stability is achieved only when the gain and loss coefficients satisfy specific parametric relations, enabling dissipation-controlled tunneling. Most notably, stable intrawell spin-flipping, while inherently unstable for an initial Fock state, becomes accessible when the system is prepared in a coherent superposition state, thereby revealing that initial-state coherence can serve as a control parameter for dynamical stability in non-Hermitian systems. These results expand the possibilities for controlling correlated tunneling in many-body systems with engineered dissipation.

Spin Josephson effects of spin–orbit-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates in a non-Hermitian double well

Jia Tang, Hu Zhou, Zhao‐Yun Zeng +5 more

Abstract In this paper, we investigate the spin and tunneling dynamics of a spin–orbit-coupled noninteracting Bose–Einstein condensate in a periodically driven non-Hermitian double-well potential. Under high-frequency driving, we obtain the effective time-averaged Hamiltonian by using the standard time-averaging method, and analytically calculate the Floquet quasienergies, revealing that the parity-time ( )-breaking phase transition appears even for arbitrarily small non-Hermitian parameters when the spin–orbit coupling strength takes half-integer value, irrespective of the values of other parameters used. When the system is -symmetric with balanced gain and loss, we find numerically and analytically that in the broken -symmetric regions, there will exist the net spin current together with a vanishing atomic current, if we drop the contribution of the exponential growth of the norm to the current behaviors. When the system is non- -symmetric, though the quasienergies are partial complex, a stable net spin current can be generated by controlling the periodic driving field, which is accompanied by a spatial localization of the condensate in the well with gain. The results deepen the understanding of non-Hermitian physics and could be useful for engineering a variety of devices for spintronics.

Transparent control of three-body selective destruction of tunneling via unusual states

Yunrong Luo, Gengbiao Lu, Jintao Tan +1 more

We study transparent control of quantum tunneling via unusual analytical solutions for three bosons held in a driven double-well. Under high-frequency approximation, we analytically obtain the fine band structure and general non-Floquet state. At some collapse points of the quasi-energy spectra, the latter becomes the unusual special states. Based on the analytical results and their numerical correspondences, we clearly reveal the mechanism of coherent tunneling and suggest a scheme to transparently control the tunneling of three bosons from one well to another. The results can be observed with the current experimental capability (Chen et al 2011 Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 210405)

Coherent control of atomic tunneling in a driven triple well

Gengbiao Lu, Wenhua Hai, Qiongtao Xie

Coherent control of quantum tunneling is investigated for a single atom held in a driven triple-well potential without tight-binding approximation. In the high-frequency regime within or without multiphoton resonance, we find the analytical solutions and their numerical correspondences, including the special Floquet states of invariant populations and the non-Floquet states of slowly varying populations. The Floquet quasienergy spectrum exhibits anticrossings and crossings for different values of the driving parameters, which are associated with different tunneling properties described by the non-Floquet states. Applying the presented results, we suggest a scheme for transporting a single atom between nonadjacent wells or between adjacent wells.
