Weak Measurement

Andrew N. Jordan, Irfan A. Siddiqi

In Chapter 4, we take a limit where the coupling of the measurement apparatus to the quantum system is very small, and in this limit, discuss weak measurements and weak values. The later involved a sequence of a weak and a strong measurement. Generalizations of these effects are discussed using the concepts in Chapter 3, and we discuss generalized eigenvalues of quantum observables that can exceed the eigenvalue range and reincorporate the concept of observables in generalized measurement theory.

Phase-space formalism: Generalized Hermite polynomials, orthogonal functions and creation–annihilation operators

G. Dattoli, A. Torre

Hermite polynomials with many variables and many indices play a crucial role within the framework of phase-space formulation of classical or quantum mechanics. A generalized operational formalism useful to handle these polynomials is discussed and also a new set of creation–annihilation operators associated to the phase-space harmonic oscillator orthogonal functions is introduced. The Fourier transform of these orthogonal functions is studied by discussing the analogies with the ordinary case. Finally, the integral representation of the generalized Hermite polynomials and a simple technique to deal with the generalized heat equation are discussed.

Quantum wells and the generalized uncertainty principle

Gardo Blado, Constance A. Owens, Vincent Meyers

The finite and infinite square wells are potentials typically discussed in undergraduate quantum mechanics courses. In this paper, we discuss these potentials in the light of the recent studies of the modification of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle into a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) as a consequence of attempts to formulate a quantum theory of gravity. The fundamental concepts of the minimal length scale and the GUP are discussed and the modified energy eigenvalues and transmission coefficient are derived.
