Reality and Locality in Quantum Mechanics

It is argued in this work that in order to explain the conflict between Bell's inequality (BI) and quantum mechanics (QM), it is neither necessary to give up the notion of Einstein locality (LOC), nor that of reality, as is done in some recent work. The definite existence of EPR's “elements of reality” is shown by using a result in a former thought experiment by M. Renninger. Einstein locality is saved by sticking to the failure of counterfactual definiteness (CFD) at the level of individual quantum processes.

Counterfactuality and the Physical Reality: lessons from quantum mechanics

Counterfactual Physics Laboratory: Probing Unmaterialized Quantum Paths via Quantum Control

Jincheng Zhang

Traditional physical experimentation is fundamentally constrained by actuality, focusing exclusively on how physical systems evolve under conditions that are physically realized. In contrast, this paper introduces the theoretical framework of the Counterfactual Physics Laboratory (CPL), a paradigm that extends quantum inquiry beyond actualized trajectories into realizable counterfactual branches. By leveraging advanced quantum control protocols, CPL constructs multiple dynamical pathways that could have occurred but did not explicitly actualize in the historical record of the system. We formulate the mathematical representation of counterfactual probability distributions, denoted as P(O) = sum_k P(O|C_k)P(C_k), and define the counterfactual observable deviation as Delta O_cf = O_actual - O_counterfactual. This framework allows us to rigorously test whether unmaterialized quantum possibilities leave measurable, observable imprints on actual measurement outcomes. The establishment of CPL bridges the gap between quantum measurement theory, causal inference, and fundamental physics, offering profound implications for our understanding of reality, potentiality, and quantum foundations.
