Abstract

We present a method for generating photon triplets in mid-infrared in a length of micro-fiber. By intermodal phase-matching, we show that the photon creation rate can achieve 1.6 triplets/s in 1-m fiber with 1-W pump power.

Third-order spontaneous parametric down-conversion in thin optical fibers as a photon-triplet source

María Corona, Karina Garay-Palmett, Alfred B. U’Ren

We study the third-order spontaneous parametric down-conversion (TOSPDC) process, as a means to generate entangled photon triplets. Specifically, we consider thin optical fibers as the nonlinear medium to be used as the basis for TOSPDC in configurations where phase matching is attained through the use of more than one fiber transverse modes. Our analysis in this paper, which follows from our earlier paper [Opt. Lett. 36, 190--192 (2011)], aims to supply experimentalists with the details required in order to design a TOSPDC photon-triplet source. Specifically, our analysis focuses on the photon triplet state, on the rate of emission, and on the TOSPDC phase-matching characteristics for the cases of frequency-degenerate and frequency nondegenerate TOSPDC.

Numerical investigation of mid-infrared single-photon generation

Richard A. McCracken, Francesco Graffitti, Alessandro Fedrizzi

Single-photon creation through parametric downconversion underpins quantum technology for quantum sensing and imaging. Here we numerically study the creation of single photons in the near- and mid-infrared regime from 1.5 - 12 um in a range of novel nonlinear semiconductor and chalcopyrite materials. We identify phase-matching conditions and single out regimes in which group-velocity matching can be achieved with commercially available pump lasers. Finally, we discuss how mid-infrared single photons can be detected. Using our numerical results, we identify materials and pump lasers for up-conversion detection in conventional wavelength bands. Our study provides a complete recipe for mid-IR single-photon generation and detection, opening up quantum enhancements for mid-IR applications such as bio-medical imaging, communication, and remote sensing.

Experimental proposal for the generation of entangled photon triplets by third-order spontaneous parametric downconversion in optical fibers

María Corona, Karina Garay-Palmett, Alfred B. U’Ren

We present an experimental proposal for the generation of photon triplets based on third-order spontaneous parametric downconversion in thin optical fibers. Our analysis includes expressions for the quantum state, which describes the photon triplets and for the generation rate in terms of all experimental parameters. We also present, for a specific source design, numerically calculated generation rates.

We investigate different glasses and fiber designs to explore the possibility of mid-infrared single photon sources. Several optimized fibers exploiting zero dispersion wavelengths to meet the phase-matching conditions have been achieved to generate single photons.

Impact of higher-order optical fiber modes for photon-triplet generation

Karina Garay-Palmett, Francisco A. Domínguez-Serna

This paper presents a study of the phasematching properties of the third-order parametric down-conversion process in multimode optical fibers with a step-index profile. Through this process, entangled photon triplets can be generated in the spontaneous regime. We show that phasematching is achieved in a wide range of fiber geometries, provided that the pump field propagates in a higher-order mode. Furthermore, we show the nonlinear coefficient and the absolute emitted flux for each source configuration, evaluated from expressions derived by us in previous theoretical studies concerning the spontaneous and stimulated emission regimes.

Engineering the spectra of photon triplets generated from micro/nanofiber

Chuan Qu, Dongqin 东琴 Guo 郭, Xiaoxiao 笑笑 Li 李 +4 more

Quantum light sources are the core resources for photonics-based quantum information processing. We investigate the spectral engineering of photon triplets generated by third-order spontaneous parametric down-conversion in micro/nanofiber. The phase mismatching at one–third pump frequency gives rise to non-degenerate photon triplets, the joint spectral intensity of which has an elliptical locus with a fixed eccentricity of 6 / 3 . Therefore, we propose a frequency-division scheme to separate non-degenerate photon triplets into three channels with high heralding efficiency for the first time. Choosing an appropriate pump wavelength can compensate for the fabrication errors of micro/nanofiber and also generate narrowband, non-degenerate photon triplet sources with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Furthermore, the long-period micro/nanofiber grating introduces a new controllable degree of freedom to tailor phase matching, resulting from the periodic oscillation of dispersion. In this scheme, the wavelength of photon triplets can be flexibly tuned using quasi-phase matching. We study the generation of photon triplets from this novel perspective of spectrum engineering, and we believe that this work will accelerate the practical implementation of photon triplets in quantum information processing.
