Abstract

This study has used the exact diagonalization technique to examine the Extended Hubbard model. The basis vectors were first generated using binary integers available in matlab, the Hamiltonian matrix were subsequently generated using the basis vectors,after-which the Eigen values of the low and some highest laying states were obtained. The results obtained would serve as a good reference against which other results obtained from other approximation techniques can be compared .

Exact diagonalization: the Bose–Hubbard model as an example

J. M. Zhang, R X Dong

We take the Bose-Hubbard model to illustrate exact diagonalization techniques in a pedagogical way. We follow the road of first generating all the basis vectors, then setting up the Hamiltonian matrix with respect to this basis, and finally using the Lanczos algorithm to solve low lying eigenstates and eigenvalues. Emphasis is placed on how to enumerate all the basis vectors and how to use the hashing trick to set up the Hamiltonian matrix or matrices corresponding to other quantities. Although our route is not necessarily the most efficient one in practice, the techniques and ideas introduced are quite general and may find use in many other problems.

Exact diagonalization of the one-dimensional hubbard model up to sixteen sites at half-filling

A. S. Olatinwo, N. Salako, A. Amosun

Numerical exact diagonalisation (ED) of the Hubbard model is traditionally constrained by the exponential growth of the Hilbert space. In this study, we implemented a symmetry-based ED framework to investigate the one-dimensional Hubbard model at half-filling for system sizes up to L=16. By exploiting particle number conservation, spin projection, and translation invariance, we significantly reduced the Hamiltonian dimension, enabling the resolution of ground state energies and dispersion relations without additional approximations. Our results confirmed the transition from a metallic to a correlated insulating regime with increasing on-site repulsion U. Furthermore, extending calculations from ten to sixteen sites revealed scaling trends that asymptotically approached the thermodynamic limit predicted by the Bethe Ansatz (𝐿= ∞). These results served as precise, reproducible benchmarks for validating approximate many-body techniques such as the Density Matrix Renormalisation Group (DMRG).

An exact solution to the extended Hubbard model in 2D for finite size system

S Harir, Mohamed Bennai, Y. Boughaleb

An exact analytical diagonalization is used to solve the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model (EHM) for a system with finite size. We have considered an EHM including on-site and off-site interactions with interaction energies U and V , respectively, for a square lattice containing 4 × 4 sites at one-eighth filling with periodic boundary conditions, recently treated by Kovacs and Gulacsi (2006 Phil. Mag. 86 2073). Taking into account the symmetric properties of this square lattice and using a translation linear operator, we have constructed a r-space basis only with 85 state-vectors which describe all possible distributions for four electrons in the 4 × 4 square lattice. The diagonalization of the 85 × 85 matrix energy allows us to study the local properties of the above system as a function of the on-site and off-site interactions energies, where we have shown that the off-site interaction encourages the existence of the double occupancies at the first excited state and induces a supplementary conductivity of the system.

Ground and excited states of even-numbered Hubbard ring at half-filling: comparison of the extended Gutzwiller approach with exact diagonalization

Yimei Fang, Feng Zhang, Zhuo Ye +6 more

It remains a great challenge in condensed matter physics to develop a method to treat strongly correlated many-body systems with balanced accuracy and efficiency. We introduce an extended Gutzwiller (EG) method incorporating a manifold technique, which builds an effective manifold of the many-body Hilbert space, to describe the ground-state (GS) and excited-state (ES) properties of strongly correlated electrons. We systematically apply an EG projector onto the GS and ES of a non-interacting system. Diagonalization of the true Hamiltonian within the manifold formed by the resulting EG wavefunctions gives the approximate GS and ES of the correlated system. To validate this technique, we implement it on even-numbered fermionic Hubbard rings at half-filling with periodic boundary conditions, and compare the results with the exact diagonalization (ED) method. The EG method is capable of generating high-quality GS and low-lying ES wavefunctions, as evidenced by the high overlaps of wavefunctions between the EG and ED methods. Favorable comparisons are also achieved for other quantities including the total energy, the double occupancy, the total spin and the staggered magnetization. With the capability of accessing the ESs, the EG method can capture the essential features of the one-electron removal spectral function that contains contributions from states deep in the excited spectrum. Finally, we provide an outlook on the application of this method on large extended systems.

Exact Diagonalization of the Hubbard Model: Ten-electrons on Ten-sites

Kingsley N. Onaiwu, Robinson O. Okanigbuan

By exactly diagonalizing the Hubbard model for ten electrons on ten sites in a one-Dimensional (1D) ring, we extend the study of Jafari (2008) to more than two electrons on two sites. We equally show the sparsity patterns of the Hamiltonian matrices for four- and eight-site problems and obtain the ground state energy eigenvalues for ten electrons on ten-sites. The technique we employ will be a good guide to a beginner/programmer.

Pairing in the two-dimensional Hubbard model: An exact diagonalization study

H. Q. Lin, J. E. Hirsch, Douglas J. Scalapino

We have studied the pair susceptibilities for all possible pair wave functions that fit on a two-dimensional (2D) eight-site Hubbard cluster by exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. Band fillings corresponding to four and six electrons were studied (two or four holes in the half-filled band) for a wide range of Hubbard interaction strengths and temperatures. Our results show that all pairing susceptibilities are suppressed by the Hubbard repulsion. We have also carried out perturbation-theory calculations which show that the leading-order ${U}^{2}$ contributions to the d-wave pair susceptibility suppresses d-wave pairing over a significant temperature range. These results are consistent with recent Monte Carlo results and provide further evidence suggesting that the 2D Hubbard model does not exhibit superconductivity.
