Generation of nonclassical states of light via truncation of mixed states

E. P. Mattos, A. Vidiella-Barranco

A possible way of generating nonclassical states of light is via the truncation of a given state in the Fock basis. In recent work, we presented an alternative scheme for such quantum scissors [ Phys. Rev. A 104 , 033715 ( 2021 ) PLRAAN 1050-2947 10.1103/PhysRevA.104.033715 ], employing a nondegenerate parametric amplifier, a beam splitter, and photodetectors. An advantage of this setup is that it does not require the generation of Fock states beforehand, as in previous proposals. Here we extend this treatment to mixed input states. We show the possibilities of generating truncated states with either a maximum Fock number N or states having a minimum Fock number N . We discuss two specific examples of states to be truncated: (i) the thermal state and (ii) the phase-diffused coherent state. In either case, the generated field states can present sub-Poissonian statistics as well as non-Gaussian character. These nonclassical properties can be adjusted by changing the parameters of the scissors, e.g., the amplifier strength and the beam-splitter transmittance.

Non-Gaussian quantum states generated via quantum catalysis and their statistical properties

Xiao-Yan 晓燕 Zhang 张, Chun-Yan 春燕 Yang 杨, Ji-Suo 继锁 Wang 王 +1 more

A new kind of non-Gaussian quantum catalyzed state is proposed via multiphoton measurements and two-mode squeezing as an input of thermal state. The characteristics of the generated multiphoton catalysis output state depends on the thermal parameter, catalyzed photon number and squeezing parameter. We then analyze the nonclassical properties by examining the photon number distribution, photocount distribution and partial negativity of the Wigner function. Our findings indicate that nonclassicality can be achieved through the implementation of multiphoton catalysis operations and modulated by the thermal parameter, catalyzed photon number and squeezing parameter.

Preparing magnonic non-Gaussian states by adding a single magnon onto Gaussian states

Zi-Xu Lu, Huai-Bing Zhu, Xuan Zuo +1 more

Quantum magnonics based on yttrium iron garnet (YIG) spheres provides a new arena for observing macroscopic quantum states. Here, we propose to prepare two kinds of non-Gaussian magnonic states by adding a single magnon to two Gaussian states, namely, coherent and thermal states. We adopt an optomagnonic system of a YIG sphere and use fast optical pulses to weakly activate the magnon-induced Stokes scattering. Conditioned on the detection of a polarized single photon, a single magnon can be added to an initial Gaussian state. We use a microwave cavity to prepare an initial magnon coherent state and finally read out the generated single-magnon added coherent or thermal state. Both the non-Gaussian states of a magnon mode in a large YIG sphere are macroscopic quantum states, which exhibit many nonclassical properties, such as sub-Poissonian statistics, quadrature squeezing, and a negative Wigner function. Further, both states show a smooth transition from a quantum state to a classical state with the change of the coherent or thermal magnon excitations and thus can be used for the fundamental study of the quantum-to-classical transition.
