Power Broadening of Saturated Absorption Resonances in a Gas 13CH3F

Abstract

Saturated absorption resonances in a gas 13CH3F at the vibration-rotation transition R(4,3) 0–1 of vibration mode ν3 detected in a probe radiation wave transmission in a presence of unidirectional saturating wave are investigated. The width of saturated absorption resonances is increasing with the growth of saturating radiation intensity. In the limit of strong saturation, the resonance shape differs from Lorentzian one by the sharper decrease in the wings, and the resonance width allows to estimate the dipole transition moment d = 0.045 D in good agreement with literature data for this transition of 13CH3F

Saturation and self-saturation effects in the field of intense laser waves: The J = 1 − J = 1 transition

Sergey G. Rautian, Э. Г. Сапрыкин, А. А. Черненко

The shape of the resonance of a saturated absorption is calculated at an arbitrary intensity of a probe field. It is revealed that, in the case of orthogonal polarizations of strong and probe fields, an increase in the intensity of the probe field can invert the shape of the nonlinear resonance of clearing of the medium, changing it to the resonance of absorption. The saturation of optical transitions by intrinsic spontaneous radiation increases the contrast of the inverted resonance of saturation and narrows its width. In the case of parallel polarizations of the optical fields, an absorption peak can arise in the shape of the nonlinear resonance upon splitting of the lower state.

Coherent Transients in a Gas 13CH3F Generated by Step Switch of Electric Field

Anton A. Rozhin, Ледовских Дмитрий Васильевич, Н. Н. Рубцова

Transient signals of optical nutations and free polarization decay arising in a gas 13CH3F (rotational transition R(4,3) of vibration mode 0–1 ν3 ) at the step-wise switch of electric field in the presence of resonant radiation of CO2 laser are investigated. In the limit of low intensity of radiation the peaks of free polarization decay are observed; the frequency of their appearance is proportional to the electric field strength. The number of observable peaks of free polarization decay decreases at laser intensity growth, and free polarization decay signal becomes indistinguishable at a background of optical nutations at high laser intensity. At high laser intensity the signal of transient optical nutations dominates. Results of calculations are in qualitative agreement with experimental data

Intensity-dependent spectral reflectivity of a dense-gas–dielectric interface

Richard M. Friedberg, Sven R. Hartmann, Jamal T. Manassah

Intense light incident on a dense-gas--dielectric interface, from the dielectric side, is reflected because of the combined effect of the discontinuities in the index of refraction at the interface and at the transition region in the gas where the degree of atomic saturation changes abruptly. This latter discontinuity gives rise to a self-reflected wave. At low intensities this self-reflected wave is weak, the problem is linear, and the net reflected wave intensity taken as a function of frequency has a simple shape that should allow measurement of the hitherto undetected self-induced frequency shift in a collision-broadened gas at an absorption resonance. Calculations show that in the weak intensity regime, r'', the imaginary part of the reflection coefficient, is quasi-Lorentzian and shifted by an amount comparable to its width. At high light intensity r'' broadens, shifts, and distorts. The distortion, which nonuniformly modulates the Lorentzian shape, comes from an interference of the forward and self-reflected waves. In the wings of the resonance line the self-reflected wave can be neglected, and the shape of r'' although not distorted is shifted from where it would be if there were no local field correction.

Coherent Nonlinear Resonances of Saturated Absorption at Transitions from the Ground 1S0 Atomic State in the Spectroscopy of Unidirectional Waves

А. А. Черненко, Э. Г. Сапрыкин

The shapes of the saturated absorption resonances at transitions from the ground 1S0 atom state in a gas medium in the field of two unidirectional waves are investigated both analytically and numerically. It is shown for the first time that the spectra of nonlinear resonances are formed by processes in the two-and three-level V-schemes resulting from the degeneracy of the upper P transition state, are qualitatively different at the resonant transition and transitions to the more excited atom states. It is established that the physical causes for differences of these spectra are due to the different degree of branching of the radiation from the excited to the ground state (the degree of openness) of transition. The degree of openness of transition determines the amount of contributions of coherent processes to the resonance shapes both in the system of two levels (coherent population beats) and three levels (nonlinear interference effect).

Theory of resonances of saturated absorption in low-pressure gases

N. M. Danileiko, Леонід Петрович Яценко

A theory of saturated absorption resonances is developed for the transit range of pressures of an absorbing gas with an arbitrary degree of saturation. The rate equation approximation is used to obtain expressions for the absorption coefficient in the cases of one traveling wave, weak and strong opposite waves, and a standing wave with a rectangular radial distribution of the intensity. An analytic study is made of the behavior of resonance widths when the saturating field intensities are varied and it is shown that, in particular, at relatively low densities the widths are proportional to the fourth root of the intensity.

The influence of higher spatial harmonics of atomic polarization on the saturated absorption resonance upon excitation of open dipole transitions by a field of counterpropagating waves

Denis V. Brazhnikov, A. S. Novokreshchenov

The effect of a double structure of saturated absorption resonance in the field of counterpropagating light waves interacting with an atomic gas is studied. The experimental observation of this effect was first reported in 2011 in a work by our colleagues at the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Laboratory of Frequency Standards). The essence of the effect lies in the fact that, on exciting an open dipole transition, another, narrower, resonance of an opposite sign can be observed at the center of the ordinary saturated absorption resonance. A theoretical analysis of this effect has also been performed in this work in terms of a simple spectroscopic model of an atom with two nondegenerate energy levels without taking into account higher spatial harmonics of atomic polarization and polarizations of light waves (scalar model). The present work is devoted to the development of a theory of the formation of a central narrow resonance for the example of a real F g = 1 → F e = 1 atomic transition and to the study of its main characteristics (amplitude, width, contrast, and amplitude-to-width ratio). In addition, the theoretical results obtained without taking into account the influence of higher spatial harmonics and with inclusion of the influence of first higher harmonics are compared. This comparison shows that their influence on the parameters of the new nonlinear resonance is strong even in moderately intense light fields (R ~ γ, where R is the Rabi frequency). The results of this study can be of interest for quantum metrology, as well as for many experiments in which the laser-radiation frequency is stabilized by the saturated absorption resonance on open dipole transitions in atoms and molecules.
