Abstract

The informed dynamic scheduling (IDS) strategies for the low-density parity check (LDPC) decoding have shown superior performance in error correction and convergence speed, particularly those based on reliability measures and residual belief propagation (RBP). However, the search for the most unreliable variable nodes and the residual precomputation required for each iteration of the IDS-LDPC increases the complexity of the decoding process which becomes more sequential, making it hard to exploit the parallelism of signal processing algorithms available in multicore platforms. To overcome this problem, a new, low-complexity scheduling system, called layered vicinal variable nodes scheduling (LWNS) is presented in this paper. With this LWNS, each variable node is updated by exchanging intrinsic information with all its associated control and variable nodes before moving to the next variable node updating. The proposed scheduling strategy is fixed by a preprocessing step of the parity control matrix instead of calculation of the residuals values and by computation of the most influential variable node instead the most unreliable metric. It also allows the parallel processing of independent Tanner graph subbranches identified and grouped in layers. Our simulation results show that the LWNS BP have an attractive convergence rate and better error correction performance with low complexity when compared to previous IDS decoders under the white Gaussian noise channel (AWGN).

Improved Decoding Algorithms of LDPC Codes Based on Reliability Metrics of Variable Nodes

Xingcheng Liu, Li'e Zi, Dong Yang +1 more

The informed dynamic scheduling (IDS) strategies for decoding of low-density parity-check codes obtained superior performance in error correction performance and convergence speed. However, there are still two problems existing in the current IDS algorithms. The first is that the current IDS algorithms only preferentially update the selected unreliable messages, but they do not guarantee the updating is performed with reliable information. In this paper, a two-step message selecting strategy is introduced. On the basis of the two reliability metrics and two types of variable node residuals, the residual belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm, short for TRM-TVRBP, is proposed. With the algorithm, the reliability of the updating-messages can be improved. The second is the greediness problem, prevalently existed in the IDS-like algorithms. The problem arises mainly from the fact that the major computing resources are allocated to or concentrated on some nodes and edges. To overcome the problem, the reliability metric-based RBP algorithm (RM-RBP) is proposed, which can force every variable node to contribute its intrinsic information to the iterative decoding. At the same time, the algorithm can force the related variable nodes to be updated, and make every edge have an equal opportunity of being updated. The simulation results show that both the TRM-TVRBP and the RM-RBP have appealing convergence rate and error-correcting performance compared with the previous IDS decoders over the white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel.

Two Informed Dynamic Scheduling Strategies for Iterative LDPC Decoders

Huang–Chang Lee, Yeong-Luh Ueng, Shan-Ming Yeh +1 more

When residual belief-propagation (RBP), which is a kind of informed dynamic scheduling (IDS), is applied to low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, the convergence speed in error-rate performance can be significantly improved. However, the RBP decoders presented in previous literature suffer from poor convergence error-rate performance due to the two phenomena explored in this paper. The first is the greedy-group phenomenon, which results in a small part of the decoding graph occupying most of the decoding resources. By limiting the number of updates for each edge message in the decoding graph, the proposed Quota-based RBP (Q-RBP) schedule can reduce the probability of greedy groups forming. The other phenomenon is the silent-variable-nodes issue, which is a condition where some variable nodes have no chance of contributing their intrinsic messages to the decoding process. As a result, we propose the Silent-Variable-Node-Free RBP (SVNF-RBP) schedule, which can force all variable nodes to contribute their intrinsic messages to the decoding process equally. Both the Q-RBP and the SVNF-RBP provide appealing convergence speed and convergence error-rate performance compared to previous IDS decoders for both dedicated and punctured LDPC codes.

Low-Complexity Check-Node-Based Serial Scheduling Belief Propagation for LDPC Codes

Lenan Wu

Compared to classic channel coding,Low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes have proved to be very powerful channel coding schemes with a broad range of applications. However,as maximum-likelihood decoding is too complex to implement, suboptimal decoders have to be employed. One of the most popular decoding algorithms of LDPC codes is belief propagation(BP) decoding.Informed Dynamic Scheduling(IDS) can provide a better BER performance, but hard to implement due to high computational complexity increased. In order to improve the convergence,a simple low-complexity sequential check-node-based scheduling strategy is proposed.A new check-node-based reliability measure is defined, which represents the degree of reliability approximately. The reliability measure is used for ordering while the actual message updates still use the exact BP equations.During an iteration, the schedule strategy finds an update sequence, which is arranged by the new defined reliability measure in ascending order.Complexity is compared among those algorithms.Mechanism why the new strategy works effective is presented.Simulation shows that the new approach significantly improves the BER performance using short-length block LDPC codes and reduces iterations.

LDPC Decoders with Informed Dynamic Scheduling

Andres I. Vila Casado, Miguel Griot, Richard D. Wesel

Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes are usually decoded by running an iterative belief-propagation (BP), or message-passing, algorithm over the factor graph of the code. The traditional message-passing scheduling, called flooding, consists of updating all the variable nodes in the graph, using the same pre-update information, followed by updating all the check nodes of the graph, again, using the same pre-update information. Recently, several studies show that sequential scheduling, in which messages are generated using the latest available information, significantly improves the convergence speed in terms of number of iterations. Sequential scheduling introduces the problem of finding the best sequence of message updates. We propose Informed Dynamic Scheduling (IDS) strategies that select the message-passing schedule according to the observed rate of change of the messages. In general, IDS strategies require computation to select the message to update but converge in fewer message updates because they focus on the part of the graph that has not converged. Moreover, IDS yields a lower error-rate performance than either flooding or sequential scheduling because IDS strategies overcome traditional trapping-set errors. This paper presents IDS strategies that address several issues including performance for short-blocklength codes, complexity, and implementability.

An efficient scheduling scheme for layered belief propagation decoding of regular LDPC codes

Hua Li, Hong Wei Ding, Linhua Zheng +3 more

Schedule plays an important role in layered belief propagation (BP) decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. It affects the error-rate performance as well as convergence rate of the decoder. In this paper, an efficient scheduling scheme is proposed to arrange the updating order of check nodes for layered BP decoder of regular LDPC codes. This scheme selects check node one at a time based on the reliability of the variable nodes. Specifically each time the check node with maximum number of low-reliability neighbors is selected. For simplicity, we introduce the updating state instead of the real-time messages to represent variable-node reliability. Simulation results on regular LDPC codes prove that the proposed scheduling scheme can obtain efficient schedules with fast convergence and good error-rate performance.

A Novel Fast LDPC Decoder Using APP-Based Dynamic Scheduling Scheme

Tian Xia, Hsiao‐Chun Wu, Scott C.-H. Huang

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are favorable in modern telecommunication technologies due to its superior error-correction capability especially when the codeword length is large. The commonly-used LDPC decoders are based on the belief-propagation (BP) algorithms. It is well known that the layered (serial) belief-propagation (LBP) decoding algorithms can reduce the number of iterations by half in comparison with the flooding (parallel) BP decoding algorithms. Further reduction in total number of iterations can be achieved by using the informed dynamic scheduling techniques, such as residual BP (RBP) and node-wise residual BP (NWRBP) methods. However, the incurred additional computation of residuals is far from trivial. In this paper, we propose a novel efficient dynamic scheduling scheme, called a posteriori probability RBP (APPRBP) algorithm, which offers more flexibility to leverage the performance-complexity trade-off using a threshold parameter. The simulation results demonstrate that the average iteration numbers for our proposed APPRBP algorithm can be remarkably reduced especially in the low E_b/N_0 (signal-energy-per-information-bit to noise-power-spectral-density ratio) conditions while the bit-error rate (BER) performance is subject to slight degradation.
