Abstract

Compared to classic channel coding,Low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes have proved to be very powerful channel coding schemes with a broad range of applications. However,as maximum-likelihood decoding is too complex to implement, suboptimal decoders have to be employed. One of the most popular decoding algorithms of LDPC codes is belief propagation(BP) decoding.Informed Dynamic Scheduling(IDS) can provide a better BER performance, but hard to implement due to high computational complexity increased. In order to improve the convergence,a simple low-complexity sequential check-node-based scheduling strategy is proposed.A new check-node-based reliability measure is defined, which represents the degree of reliability approximately. The reliability measure is used for ordering while the actual message updates still use the exact BP equations.During an iteration, the schedule strategy finds an update sequence, which is arranged by the new defined reliability measure in ascending order.Complexity is compared among those algorithms.Mechanism why the new strategy works effective is presented.Simulation shows that the new approach significantly improves the BER performance using short-length block LDPC codes and reduces iterations.

Check Node Reliability-Based Scheduling for BP Decoding of Non-Binary LDPC Codes

Guojun Han, Yong Liang Guan, Xinmei Huang

Scheduling strategy is considered an important aspect of belief-propagation (BP) decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes because it affects the decoder's convergence rate, decoding complexity and error-correction performance. In this paper, we propose two new scheduling strategies for the BP decoding of non-binary LDPC (NB-LDPC) codes. Both the strategies are devised based on the concept of check node reliability and employ a heuristically defined threshold which can adapt to the communication channel variations. As the scheduling strategies only update a subset of the check nodes in each iteration, they result in reduced iteration cost. Furthermore, since the BP performs suboptimally for finite-length LDPC codes, especially for short-length LDPC codes, by enhancing the message propagation over the Tanner Graphs of short-length NB-LDPC codes, the new scheduling strategies can even improve the error-correction performances of BP decoding. Simulation results demonstrate that the new scheduling strategies provide good performance/complexity tradeoffs.

A Reliability Profile Based Low-Complexity Dynamic Schedule LDPC Decoding

Ruijia Yuan, Tianjiao Xie, Zhongfeng Wang

In order to improve the error correction performance of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes, In this paper, we propose a Reliability Profile (RP) Based Low-Complexity Dynamic Schedule, called RPD. In terms of dynamic scheduling, the new RPD method is distinct from the existing residual belief propagation (RBP) and its variations, since RPD is based on residual criterion. Reliability divides nodes message into two categories: reliable and unreliable. By using as many messages as possible from the latest available current iteration instead of the previous iteration to update unreliable messages multiple times to speed up the convergence speed and increase the total number of updates of effective nodes message, so as to improve the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance. By not updating the reliable message, the number of ineffective nodes message updates is reduced, thereby reducing the decoding complexity. Besides, the more iterations increase, the fewer calculations of these reliable nodes. Moreover, based on reliability profile, RPD has an advantage over RBP for dynamic scheduling in that the former only needs integer operations, while the latter requires float operations. Therefore, the RPD algorithm not only accelerates the convergence speed of LDPC decoding and but also improves the BER performance while reducing the complexity. The analysis and simulation results show that the RPD strategy not only retains the fast-convergence advantage of RBP, but also has a better convergence BER performance compared to that of node-wise residual belief propagation (NW RBP). Furthermore, the simulation results show that the RPD can significantly improve the convergence speed of protograph LDPC decoding.

An efficient scheduling scheme for layered belief propagation decoding of regular LDPC codes

Hua Li, Hong Wei Ding, Linhua Zheng +3 more

Schedule plays an important role in layered belief propagation (BP) decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. It affects the error-rate performance as well as convergence rate of the decoder. In this paper, an efficient scheduling scheme is proposed to arrange the updating order of check nodes for layered BP decoder of regular LDPC codes. This scheme selects check node one at a time based on the reliability of the variable nodes. Specifically each time the check node with maximum number of low-reliability neighbors is selected. For simplicity, we introduce the updating state instead of the real-time messages to represent variable-node reliability. Simulation results on regular LDPC codes prove that the proposed scheduling scheme can obtain efficient schedules with fast convergence and good error-rate performance.

LDPC Decoders with Informed Dynamic Scheduling

Andres I. Vila Casado, Miguel Griot, Richard D. Wesel

Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes are usually decoded by running an iterative belief-propagation (BP), or message-passing, algorithm over the factor graph of the code. The traditional message-passing scheduling, called flooding, consists of updating all the variable nodes in the graph, using the same pre-update information, followed by updating all the check nodes of the graph, again, using the same pre-update information. Recently, several studies show that sequential scheduling, in which messages are generated using the latest available information, significantly improves the convergence speed in terms of number of iterations. Sequential scheduling introduces the problem of finding the best sequence of message updates. We propose Informed Dynamic Scheduling (IDS) strategies that select the message-passing schedule according to the observed rate of change of the messages. In general, IDS strategies require computation to select the message to update but converge in fewer message updates because they focus on the part of the graph that has not converged. Moreover, IDS yields a lower error-rate performance than either flooding or sequential scheduling because IDS strategies overcome traditional trapping-set errors. This paper presents IDS strategies that address several issues including performance for short-blocklength codes, complexity, and implementability.

Improved Decoding of Binary and Non-Binary LDPC Codes by Probabilistic Shuffled Belief Propagation

Moritz Beermann, Laurent Schmalen, Peter Vary

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have proved to be very powerful channel coding schemes with a broad range of applications. However, as maximum-likelihood decoding is utterly complex, suboptimal decoders have to be employed. One of the most popular decoding algorithms of LDPC codes is belief propagation (BP) decoding. In this paper, we present a novel scheduling for belief propagation decoding of LDPC codes. The new approach combines probabilistic scheduling with the known shuffled and check-shuffled serial scheduling algorithms. The resulting probabilistic shuffled and probabilistic check-shuffled decoders show a superior performance in terms of residual bit error rate. The drawback is that the convergence speed is slightly decreased. However, the convergence is still faster than for the standard and probabilistic flooding algorithms. Furthermore, we have adapted the probabilistic flooding schedule and the proposed probabilistic shuffled schedule to the non-binary case. We show that the aforementioned effects on the binary decoder can similarly be observed when applying the different schedules to the decoding of LDPC codes over higher order Galois fields.

Variable-Node-Based Dynamic Scheduling Strategy for Belief-Propagation Decoding of LDPC Codes

Xingcheng Liu, Yuanbin Zhang, Ru Cui

Among the belief-propagation (BP) decoding algorithms of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, the algorithms based on dynamic scheduling strategy show excellent performance. In this letter, we propose a variable-node-based dynamic scheduling decoding algorithm. For the proposed algorithm, the reliability of variable nodes is evaluated based on the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) values and the parity-check equations; then, a more accurate dynamic selection strategy is presented. Simultaneously, the oscillating variable nodes are processed so that the influence of the spread of error messages caused by oscillation are suppressed. In addition, the proposed algorithm updates the same number of messages in one iteration as the original BP decoding algorithm does, which is different from some other dynamic decoding algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms.
