The short Doppler-limited coherence time of the laser-excited Rydberg state, usually orders of magnitude shorter than the lifetime of the Rydberg state, hinders the Rydberg-mediated quantum technologies. Here, we show that a 649~nm~
−~658~nm two-photon excitation of the
6sng 1G4 Rydberg state from a long-lived d-orbital clock state of barium can be achieved with a two-photon wavevector that is tiny, which effectively removes the Doppler-limited decoherence. Moreover, the
6sng 1G4 Rydberg state has strong dipole-dipole interaction due to small Förster defect with nearby Rydberg states and possesses long radiative lifetime. These can benefit quantum computing based on individually trapped neutral atoms, and can enable long-lived Rydberg polaritons in atomic media, which brings fresh opportunities in all-optical quantum information.
By combining the quantum theory of radiative transition with multichannel quantum-defect theory, we have derived a general formula to calculate the lifetimes of highly excited states for atoms. As an example, we have evaluated the lifetimes for the perturbed 6snd
1D2 (n=8--40) and 6snd
3D2 (n=10--26) Rydberg levels, and the perturbers of the ytterbium atom. We have not only obtained results that are in perfect agreement with the recent measurements, but also predicted the lifetimes of 18 other highly excited states. The results indicate that the dramatic variation for lifetimes of Rydberg states in the vicinity of perturbing states is due to the strong channel interaction.
The highly excited even levels of the lutetium atom are studied by two-step resonance ionisation spectroscopy. Four Rydberg series, 6s 2 ns 2 S 1/2 (n=17-76), 6s 2 nd 2 D 3/2 (n=14-105), 6s 2 nd 2 D 5/2 (n=19-87) and 6s 2 ng 2 G 9/2 (n=21-61), are measured and analysed. A very weak perturbation from an unassigned J= 3 / 2 even valence level is observed around 6s 2 52d 2 D 3/2 as a dip of ion signals induced by a decrease of radiative lifetimes in the perturbed Rydberg states. Small dips observed in nearby 6s 2 ns 2 S 1/2 and 6s 2 nd 2 D 5/2 Rydberg states are interpreted as the influence of the quadrupole hyperfine interaction of 175 Lu (I= 7 / 2 ).
