Abstract

A new photonic N00N state source is presented, where the two entangled photons are directly generated at a spatially shaped periodically poled nonlinear crystal. An interference experiment shows the super resolution that characterize such states.

Compact 2D nonlinear photonic crystal source of beamlike path entangled photons

We demonstrate a method to generate entangled photons with controlled spatial shape by parametric down conversion (PDC) in a 2D nonlinear crystal. A compact and novel crystal source was designed and fabricated, generating directly path entangled photons without the use of additional beam-splitters. This crystal supports two PDC processes, emitting biphotons into two beamlike modes simultaneously. Two coherent path entangled amplitudes of biphotons were created and their interference observed. Our method enables the generation of entangled photons with controlled spatial, spectral and polarization properties.

Direct generation of high brightness path entangled N00N states using structured crystals and shaped pump beams

Giuseppe Di Domenico, Shaul Pearl, Aviv Karnieli +4 more

Optical N00N states are N-photon path entangled states with important applications in quantum metrology. However, their use was limited till now owing to the difficulties of generating them in an efficient and robust manner. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate two new simple, compact and robust schemes to generate path entangled N00N states with N = 2 that emerge directly from the nonlinear interaction. The first scheme is based on shaping the pump beam, and the second scheme is based on modulating the nonlinear coefficient of the crystal. These new methods exhibit high coincidence count rates for the detection of a N00N state, reaching record value of 2 × 105 coincidences per second. We observe super-resolution by measuring the second order correlation on the generated N = 2 state in an interferometric setup, showing the distinct fringe periodicity at half of the optical wavelength. Our findings may pave the way towards scalable and efficient sources for super-resolved quantum metrology applications and for the generation of bright squeezed vacuum states.

Compact generation of a two-photon multipath Dicke state from a single χ(2) nonlinear photonic crystal

Huaying Liu, Rong Zhang, Ping Xu +3 more

Multipartite quantum entanglement is a powerful resource for enriching the functionality of quantum computation and quantum communication. In this Letter, we propose a new method to generate a two-photon multipath Dicke state with concurrent spontaneous parametric downconversion processes from a single periodically poled nonlinear photonic crystal. We design the poling structure to produce a three-path Dicke state where three quasi-phase-matching conditions are fulfilled simultaneously by a hybrid one- and two-dimensionally poled nonlinear photonic crystal. We use genuine multipartite entanglement concurrence to quantify the entanglement of the Dicke state. Using a more complicated poling configuration like multiple-periodically poled two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal, we can also produce four-path, five-path, or multipath Dicke states by a single crystal. The multiple-periodically poled two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal provides a new method, to the best of our knowledge, for the integrated generation of multipartite quantum light sources.

A novel compact and efficient source of photonic entanglement

Fabian Laudenbach, Sebastian Kalista, Michael Hentschel +2 more

Summary form only given. Up to this point, photon-entanglement sources suffered from the compromise of being either compact or efficient, but not both at the same time [1-6]. Our new concept of creating entanglement [7] combines most of the advantages of the various existing schemes. The setup offers high coupling efficiencies due to its collinear design and is still as compact and simplistic as a BBO source [1], requiring only one crystal with uniform poling periodicity, pumped from only one direction.Periodic poling of a nonlinear crystal allows for a positive energy transfer from the pump (p) field to signal (s) and idler (i). The required poling periodicity to support a given process kp - ks - kt requires an alternation of the effective nonlinear coefficient deff in integer multiples of a certain grating length, the poling periodicity A = 2πμ/Δk, where m is an odd integer and Δk = kp - ks - kt is the momentum-difference vector. Note that Δk can be both positive and negative. Our source relies on the fact that one periodically poled crystal with grating period A, pumped with a given laser frequency, can provide phase-matching for two downconversion processes simultaneously: one with a positive momentum-difference vector Δk and one whose Δk is of same magnitude but opposite sign. Careful design of the experimental setup allows for generation of two orthogonally polarised pairs which are interchangeable in wavelength. This results in a polarisation- and frequency-entangled state.
