Abstract

Optical N00N states are N-photon path entangled states with important applications in quantum metrology. However, their use was limited till now owing to the difficulties of generating them in an efficient and robust manner. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate two new simple, compact and robust schemes to generate path entangled N00N states with N = 2 that emerge directly from the nonlinear interaction. The first scheme is based on shaping the pump beam, and the second scheme is based on modulating the nonlinear coefficient of the crystal. These new methods exhibit high coincidence count rates for the detection of a N00N state, reaching record value of 2 × 105 coincidences per second. We observe super-resolution by measuring the second order correlation on the generated N = 2 state in an interferometric setup, showing the distinct fringe periodicity at half of the optical wavelength. Our findings may pave the way towards scalable and efficient sources for super-resolved quantum metrology applications and for the generation of bright squeezed vacuum states.

Simulating Correlations of Structured Spontaneously Down‐Converted Photon Pairs

Sivan Trajtenberg‐Mills, Aviv Karnieli, Noa Voloch‐Bloch +3 more

Abstract Introducing structure into photon pair generation via spontaneous parametric down‐conversion (SPDC) is shown to be useful for controlling the output state and exploiting new degrees of freedom for quantum technologies. This paper presents a new method for simulating first‐ and second‐order correlations of the down‐converted photons in the presence of structured pump beams and shaped nonlinear photonic crystals. This method is nonperturbative, and thus accounts for high‐order effects, and can be made very efficient using parallel computing. Experimental results of photodetection and coincidence rates in complex spatial configurations are recovered quantitatively by this method. These include SPDC in 2D nonlinear photonic crystals, as well as with structured light beams such as Laguerre Gaussian and Hermite Gaussian beams. This simulation method reveals conservation rules for the down‐converted signal and idler beams that depend on the nonlinear crystal modulation pattern and the pump shape. This scheme can facilitate the design of nonlinear crystals and pumping conditions for generating non‐classical light with pre‐defined properties.

Phase super-resolution with N00N states generated by on demand single-photon sources

Markus A. Müller, Hüseyin Avni Vural, Peter Michler

Multi-photon entangled states such as `N00N states' have attracted a lot of attention because of their possible application in high-precision phase measurements. So far, N00N states have been generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion sources and by mixing quantum and classical light on a beam splitter. However, single-photon on demand sources promise to be more efficient and scalable than down-conversion sources which are probabilistic in nature. Here, we demonstrate super-resolving phase measurements based on two-photon N00N states generated by a quantum dot single-photon source utilizing the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect on a beam splitter. The quantum dot was excited through a two-photon resonant excitation scheme. Using a $π$-pulse, this results in the deterministic generation of indistinguishable single photons from both, the biexciton and exciton radiative recombination processes. Launching either type of the photons into both inputs of an interferometer, phase super-resolution, i.e. an interference fringe spacing with doubled rate relative to the single photon rate has been observed for both transitions. Interference visibilities of $V_{N=2,\mathit{XX}}=0.54\pm0.01$ for the biexciton and $V_{N=2,\mathit{X}}=0.46\pm0.02$ for the exciton transition have been obtained, respectively.

Compact generation scheme of path–frequency hyperentangled photons using 2D periodical nonlinear photonic crystal

Yang-He 洋河 Chen 陈, Bo 波 Ji 季, Nian-Qin 念芹 Li 李 +6 more

Hyperentanglement is a promising resource for achieving high capacity quantum communication. Here, we propose a compact scheme for the generation of path–frequency hyperentangled photon pairs via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) processes, where six different paths and two different frequencies are covered. A two-dimensional periodical χ (2) nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC) is designed to satisfy type-I quasi-phase-matching conditions in the plane perpendicular to the incident pump beam, and a perfect phase match is achieved along the pump beam’s direction to ensure high conversion efficiency, with theoretically estimated photon flux up to 2.068 × 105 pairs⋅s−1⋅mm−2. We theoretically calculate the joint-spectral amplitude (JSA) of the generated photon pair and perform Schmidt decomposition on it, where the resulting entropy S of entanglement and effective Schmidt rank K reach 3.2789 and 6.4675, respectively. Our hyperentangled photon source scheme could provide new avenues for high-dimensional quantum communication and high-speed quantum information processing.

Efficient Generation of Large Number-Path Entanglement Using Only Linear Optics and Feed-Forward

Hugo V. Cable, Jonathan P. Dowling

We show how an idealized measurement procedure can condense photons from two modes into one and how, by feeding forward the results of the measurement, it is possible to generate efficiently superposition states commonly called N00N states. For the basic procedure sources of number states leak onto a beam splitter, and the output ports are monitored by photodetectors. We find that detecting a fixed fraction of the input at one output port suffices to direct the remainder to the same port, with high probability, however large the initial state. When instead photons are detected at both ports, macroscopic quantum superposition states are produced. We describe a linear-optical circuit for making the components of such a state orthogonal, and another to convert the output to a N00N state. Our approach scales exponentially better than existing proposals. Important applications include quantum imaging and metrology.

Scalable generation of multiphoton path entanglement with high NOON-state fidelity

I. Afek, O. Ambar, Yaron R. Silberberg

"Schrodinger's cat" is a gedankenexperiment intended to highlight conceptual difficulties in the interpretation of quantum mechanics. The generation of 'cat-like' states is central to numerous quantum information protocols. In particular, much attention has been drawn by states containing N photons in a superposition of all being in one of two designated modes. These maximally path entangled states, known as 'NOON' states, exhibit enhanced phase sensitivity and allow reaching the fundamental quantum limit of precision measurement. Such states could also be used for obtaining 'super-resolution' in quantum lithography. Creation of NOON states in the lab, has been limited to N=3. Surpassing this has proven a formidable experimental challenge. Here, we realize a scheme for generation of high fidelity NOON states with arbitrarily large N. We demonstrate the versatility of the scheme by measuring up to N=5 in a single setup, this is in contrast to previous experiments which were custom-designed for a specific N. The scheme is based on high order interference between 'quantum' down-converted light and 'classical' coherent light in the photon number basis. Our results verify the high degree of path entanglement which emerges naturally from the interference of two ubiquitous, easy to generate, states of light.
