Electromagnetic-induced transparency of Wannier-Mott excitons

M. Artoni, Giuseppe Carlo La Rocca, F. Bassani

We predict a remarkable quenching of the absorption due to electromagnetic-induced transparency in an undoped bulk semiconductor. For free-exciton lines the effect is expected to be as large as that observed in atomic systems. The conditions for its occurrence are determined and numerical estimates are presented for the specific case of the "yellow" exciton of

Self-induced transparency in semiconductor quantum dots

Giovanna Panzarini, Ulrich Hohenester, Elisa Molinari

We present a theoretical analysis of self-induced transparency in a sample of inhomogeneously broadened semiconductor quantum dots. A general theoretical framework accounting for mutual light-matter interactions in the presence of single and biexciton transitions is presented. Numerical results demonstrate that intense light pulses can propagate in realistic state-of-the-art dot samples without suffering strong losses.

Optical solitons in semiconductor quantum dot waveguides

Guram T. Adamashvili, A. Knorr, C. Weber

A theory of self-induced transparency for a TM-mode propagating in a planar semiconductor waveguide sandwiched between two dielectric media is developed. A transition layer between the waveguide and one of the connected media is described using a model of a two-dimensional sheet of quantum dots. Explicit analytical expressions for the optical soliton in the presence of single-excitonic and biexcitonic transitions are obtained with realistic parameters which can be reached in current experiments.

Theory of Many Wannier Excitons. II. Absence of Self-Induced Transparency

Eiichi Hanamura

The present paper has the dual purposes. As the first purpose, it is demonstrated that the boson description of Wannier excitons introduced in the preceding paper is suitable also to discussion of non-linear coherent interaction of Wannier excitons with the radiation field. The second purpose is to discuss the possibility of self-induced transparency due to Wannier excitons on the basis of the boson description by making clear the difference between a two-level atomic system and a system of excitons which can propagate in a crystal as polariton. As a result, stable pulse propagation of the radiation field is shown to be prevented by the polariton effect of excitons.

Massive creation of entangled exciton states in semiconductor quantum dots

Ulrich Hohenester

An intense laser pulse propagating in a medium of inhomogeneously broadened quantum dots massively creates entangled exciton states. After passage of the pulse all single-exciton states remain unpopulated (self-induced transparency) whereas biexciton coherence (exciton entanglement) is generated through two-photon transitions. We propose several experimental techniques for the observation of such unexpected behavior.
