Abstract

We design and fabricate phononic crystals in single-crystal diamond hosting silicon vacancy centers. The complete bandgap in the phononic crystals aims to improve coherence of optical transitions in silicon vacancy centers by suppressing phonon-driven processes.

Coherence Properties and Quantum Control of Silicon Vacancy Color Centers in Diamond (Phys. Status Solidi A 11∕2017)

Jonas N. Becker, Christoph Becher

In the last decade atom-sized point defects in diamond, so called colour centres, have proven to be suitable systems for quantum information processing as well as quantum communication and sensing applications. Besides the wellknown nitrogen vacancy centre, the negatively charged silicon vacancy centre has recently proven to be a promising candidate due to its superior spectral properties such as narrow zero-phonon line widths and small phonon sidebands. In this feature article (article No.201700586) the authors summarize the center's electronic and optical properties as well as recent advances in controlling its quantum state using microwave as well as ultrafast all-optical control techniques which make it accessible for future quantum information processing applications. Moreover, the authors outline potential future experimental directions to improve the center's coherence time scale which so far is limited by phonon-induced decoherence. The cover picture shows an artistic representation of the silicon vacancy centre with its inversion-symmetric structure in a diamond crystal being addressed by an ultrashort laser pulse.

Revealing the Orientation Dependence of Coherent Coupling in Silicon-Vacancy Centers in Diamond

Matthew W. Day, Kelsey M. Bates, Christopher L. Smallwood +8 more

We investigate the orientation dependence of coherent coupling in the zero-phonon line of an ensemble of SiV− centers in diamond. The results indicate that crystal orientation and polarization could be tools for coherent optical control.

Coupling of Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers to Photonic Crystal Resonators in Monocrystalline Diamond

Andrei Faraon, Zhihong Huang, Víctor M. Acosta +2 more

The zero-phonon transition rate for nitrogen-vacancy centers is enhanced by coupling to photonic crystal resonators fabricated in monocrystalline diamond. Autocorrelation measurements on the spectrally filtered zero-phonon line demonstrate coupling of a single emitter.

Coupling of silicon-vacancy centers to a single crystal diamond cavity

Jonathan C. Lee, Igor Aharonovich, Andrew P. Magyar +2 more

Optical coupling of an ensemble of silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers to single-crystal diamond microdisk cavities is demonstrated. The cavities are fabricated from a single-crystal diamond membrane generated by ion implantation and electrochemical liftoff followed by homo-epitaxial overgrowth. Whispering gallery modes spectrally overlap with the zero-phonon line (ZPL) of the SiV centers and exhibit quality factors ∼ 2200. Lifetime reduction from 1.8 ns to 1.48 ns is observed from SiV centers in the cavity compared to those in the membrane outside the cavity. These results are pivotal in developing diamond integrated photonics networks.

We present all-optical, ultrafast coherent control of single silicon vacancy color centers in diamond and single qubit operations both on a direct transition and in a Λ-system. We further discuss methods for efficient photonic interfacing.
