Abstract

A continuous excitation band of a free-bound photoassociation transition of ytterbium atoms is observed as a red wing of the $^{1}S_{0}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{1}P_{1}$ atomic line at 399 nm for a hot thermal vapor. The excitation to the ${0}_{u}^{+}$ molecular state is observed by monitoring fluorescence from the $^{3}P_{1}$ state atoms, which allows us to detect the production of ${\mathrm{Yb}}_{2}$ molecules with high sensitivity. The photoassociation is characterized in comparison with transitions to atomic Rydberg states. The time profile of the fluorescence signal suggests that the ${0}_{u}^{+}$ molecular state predissociates with states correlating to the $^{1}S_{0}+^{3}D_{2}$ atomic states.

Photoassociation spectroscopy of lattice-trapped Yb171 atoms near the S01−P13 (f=1/2) intercombination line

Changyue Sun, Di Ai, Taoyun Jin +4 more

We report on the photoassociation (PA) spectroscopy of cold $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$ atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The PA spectral lines correlating to the $^{1}S_{0}+^{3}P_{1}$ $(f=1/2)$ state are observed experimentally. High accuracy and narrow atom-loss spectra are measured ranging up to about 1.2 GHz red detuning with respect to the atomic resonance. The main systematic frequency shifts of the PA transitions are determined with total uncertainties less than 100 kHz, which is more accurate than previous similar experimental results. We determine the initial scattering state of the PA spectra by comparing the spectra with polarized and unpolarized atomic samples. By comparatively analyzing theoretical results calculated based on an adiabatic molecular potential with experimental data, the excited molecular potentials corresponding to the spectral lines are clarified. The precision measurement of the narrow PA spectra plays an important role in exploring atomic interactions and lays the groundwork for the study of cold ytterbium molecules.

HgIn photoassociation, bound-bound transitions, and excimer emission

Paola Bicchi, C. Marinelli, Robert A. Bernheim

Laser excitation of In atoms at the $6{}^{2}{S}_{1/2}--5{}^{2}{P}_{1/2}$ atomic resonance transition wavelength of 410.3 nm in the presence of Hg vapor produces several types of emission features: HgIn excimer satellites on the red wings of the In resonance fluorescence transitions at 410.3 and 451.1 nm, bound-bound HgIn molecular fluorescence at 499 and 522 nm resulting from photoassociation of $\mathrm{In}(6{}^{2}{S}_{1/2})$ with $\mathrm{Hg}(6{}^{1}{S}_{0}),$ and UV atomic fluorescence from the $\mathrm{In}(5{}^{2}D)$ states that lie at energies above the $\mathrm{In}(6{}^{2}{S}_{1/2}--5{}^{2}{P}_{1/2})$ excitation. These various spectral features are interpreted in terms of a proposed HgIn potential-energy level diagram with additional information from measured excited-state lifetimes and the power dependence of the laser excitation at 410.3 and 522 nm. Direct excitation of the 499 and 522 nm HgIn bound-bound transitions also produces emission at 410.3 and 451.1 nm resulting from collisional dissociation of the excited HgIn states.

Photoassociation Spectroscopy of Laser-Cooled Ytterbium Atoms

洋介 高須, Yosuke Takasu, 和仁 本多 +8 more

We report the photoassociation spectroscopy of laser-cooled ytterbium atoms in an optical trap. We observed more than 90 photoassociation resonances of vibrational levels in the 1Σu+ state, including 80 consecutive series, up to 490 GHz detuning with respect to the atomic resonance. From the resonance frequencies we derived the atomic radiative lifetime of the (6s6p) 1P1 state to be 5.464±0.005 ns, which is about 2 orders of magnitude improvement over previous results. We also observed line broadening of resonances, which is ascribed to the predissociation to the triplet states, and estimated the transition probability to be 0.2. Furthermore, we observed the decrease of the photoassociation signal intensity, from which the scattering length is estimated to be equal to or less than 3 nm.

Photoassociation, photoluminescence, and collisional dissociation of the Sr2 dimer

T. H. Bergeman, P. F. Liao

We report observations and analysis of the laser-excited photoluminescence of Sr2. The spectra contains some discrete molecular line spectra, but is dominated by extensive, deeply modulated continua characteristic of bound–free transitions of excimer systems. Dye laser and argon laser excitation of the Sr2 dimer is used. Some of the spectra is attributed to fluorescence from dimers created by laser induced photoassociation of free Sr atoms. Techniques are developed to obtain Morse potential parameters by computer modeling of the observed spectra. We find for the X 1Σ+g state, De=1100±100 cm−1, ωe=39.6±1 cm−1; for the A 1Σ+u state, De=5460±100 cm−1, ωe=83±3 cm−1; and Re″−Re′=0.49±0.02 Å. Strong collision-induced predissociation is observed and attributed to a potential curve crossing. Cross sections for dissociation by argon are reported as a function of laser excitation wavelength.

High-Resolution Photoassociation Spectroscopy of Ultracold Ytterbium Atoms by Using the Intercombination Transition

賢 東條, Masaaki Kitagawa, Katsunari Enomoto +4 more

We observed high-resolution photoassociation spectra of laser-cooled ytterbium (Yb) atoms in the spin-forbidden 1S0 - 3P1 intercombination line. The rovibrational levels in the 0u+ state were measured for red detunings of the photoassociation laser ranging from 2.9 MHz to 1.97 GHz with respect to the atomic resonance. The rotational splitting of the vibrational levels near the dissociation limit were fully resolved due to the sub-MHz linewidth of the spectra in contrast to previous measurements using the spin-allowed singlet transition. In addition, from a comparison between the spectra of 174Yb and those of 176Yb, a d-wave shape resonance for 174Yb is strongly suggested.
