Pushing the limits on chip-scale quantum light generation for sensing and precision metrology

Trevor J. Steiner, Joshua E. Castro, Lin Chang +2 more

The AlGaAsOI material platform offers great promise as a source of quantum states of light that can be utilized for enhanced sensing and metrology beyond the standard quantum limit. Here we focus on preliminary results from AlGaAsOI microring resonator sources that demonstrate a 1000-fold improvement in the brightness of entangled photon pairs compared to state-of-the-art chip-scale sources. The source maintains high single photon purity < 99% and time-energy entanglement visibility < 95%.

Electrically driven source of time-energy entangled photons based on a self-pumped silicon microring resonator

Francesco Garrisi, Federico Andrea Sabattoli, Savda Sam +8 more

Time-energy entangled photon pairs are fundamental resources for quantum communication protocols since they are robust against environmental fluctuations in optical fiber networks. Pair sources based on spontaneous four-wave mixing in silicon microring resonators usually employ expensive external tunable lasers to compensate for ambient fluctuations; adopting self-pumped configurations, instead, lifts the need for such external source. Here we demonstrate the emission of time-energy entangled photon pairs at telecom wavelengths from a silicon self-pumped ring, obtaining a Franson interference fringe with 93.9 % ± 0.9 % visibility.

Narrowband and High-Rate Entangled Photon-Pair Generation from a High-Q Silicon Microring Resonator

Shoichiro Yasui, Tomohiro Inaba, Hidetaka Nishi +4 more

Entangled photon-pair sources are essential components for emerging quantum information-processing technologies. Among various platforms, on-chip microresonators offer strong potential due to their resonant enhancement and suitability for wafer-scale integration. In this study, we demonstrate ultrabright entangled photon-pair generation from high- Q silicon microring resonators. By optimizing the device geometry and coupling configuration to suppress sidewall scattering and selectively excite the fundamental mode, we achieve single-mode resonance with an intrinsic Q -factor of 1.26 × 10 6 using only standard fabrication processes available in CMOS foundries. The resulting high- Q resonator yields a record-high brightness coefficient of 3.9 × 10 9 Hz/GHz/mW 2 . At an on-chip pump power of 240 μW, we obtain a maximum brightness of 22.0 MHz/GHz and a maximum photon-pair generation rate of 9.19 MHz. At a low-pump power of 10 μW, Franson-type two-photon interference exhibits a visibility of 98.0 ± 0.2%, confirming high-quality time–energy entanglement. These results show that narrow bandwidth and high generation rate can be achieved simultaneously in CMOS-compatible silicon photonic sources, thereby advancing their use in quantum repeaters and scalable quantum networks.
