All-optical Kerr modulator based on a carbon nanotube resonator

Jinjin Li, Wei Jian He, Ka-Di Zhu

A scheme for an all-optical Kerr modulator based on a carbon nanotube resonator is proposed. Theoretical analysis has shown that the enhanced optical Kerr effect can be modulated instantaneously while tuning the intensity of the control field. This control laser, like a modulator, dramatically controls the magnitude of the optical Kerr effect in the carbon nanotube. We attribute this tunable optical Kerr effect to the vibration of carbon nanotube, which makes a contribution to additional auxiliary energy levels so that the optical Kerr effect can be realized. Using this optical Kerr modulator, we also provide a method to measure the vibrational frequency of the carbon nanotube in an all-optical domain.

Kerr Effect in Brillouin Fiber-optic Ringesonator

Wang Jun

Based on the mechanism of Kerr effect in Brillouin Fiber-optic Ring Resonator(BFRR),the resonant cavity characteristic is researched theoretically when considering the Kerr effect,in order to get the possibility of occurrence of first-order Stokes light optical bistability. Experiments show that the optical bistability in 30 meters short cavity happens while input light intensity is about 440 μW,and the bistability is related with coupling coefficient and the insertion loss of the cavity coupler. Secondly, the Kerr effect in BFRR of Brillouin Fiber-optic Gyroscope (BFOG) is analyzed, focusing on the influence of resonant deviation on gyroscope nonlinear output and dynamic working range. Furthermore, the double-loop BFOG program is proposed, which provides a potential solution of Kerr effect error in Brillouin fiber-optic gyroscope.

Kerr-Type Leaky Resonators

M. Nevière, E. Popov, R. Reinisch +1 more

Kerr-type leaky resonators are distributed couplers. They can be prism or \ngrating couplers, Fabry-Pérot's or multilayer devices all which include a nonlinear \nmedium that exhibits the optical Kerr effect [IX. 1 and IX.2]. One of the key features of \nthe optical Kerr effect is that it gives rise to a light-intensity dependent refractive index, \nallowing in this way to control light with light [IX.3]. This constitutes a fascinating field \nof nonlinear optics. The resulting all-optical interactions lead to numerous manifestations \nranging from optical bistability to "exotic" behavior such as self-pulsing, chaos, strange \npattern, light bullets, etc. The first observations of optical bistability date back to the \n1970s [ІХ.4-ІХ.7]. A proper study of these effects requires the development of a spatiotemporal theory of the optical Kerr effect in leaky resonators [IX.8].
