Abstract

In this paper we investigate non-Markovian evolution of a two-level system (qubit) in a bosonic bath under influence of an external classical fluctuating environment. The interaction with the bath has the Lorentzian spectral density, and the fluctuating environment (stochastic field) is represented by a set of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. Each of the subenvironments of the composite environment is able to induce non-Markovian dynamics of the two-level system. By means of the numerically exact method of hierarchical equations of motion, we study steady states of the two-level system, evolution of the reduced density matrix and the equilibrium emission spectra in dependence on the frequency cutoffs and the coupling strengths of the subenvironments. Additionally, we investigate the impact of the rotating wave approximation (RWA) for the interaction with the bath on accuracy of the results.

Non-Markovian dynamics of a two-level system in a bosonic bath and a Gaussian fluctuating environment with finite correlation time

V. A. Mikhailov, Nikolay V. Troshkin

The character of evolution of an open quantum system is often encoded in the correlation function of the environment or, equivalently, in the spectral density function of the interaction. When the environment is heterogeneous, e.g., consists of several independent subenvironments with different spectral functions, one of the subenvironments can be considered auxiliary and used to control decoherence of the open quantum system in the remaining part of the environment. The control can be realized, for example, by adjusting the character of interaction with the subenvironment via suitable parameters of its spectral density. We investigate non-Markovian evolution of a two-level system (qubit) under influence of three independent decoherence channels: two of them have classical nature and originate from interaction with a stochastic field, and the third is a quantum channel formed by interaction with a bosonic bath. By modifying spectral densities of the channels, we study their impact on steady states of the two-level system, evolution of its density matrix, and the equilibrium emission spectra. Additionally, we investigate the impact of the rotation-wave approximation applied to the bath channel on accuracy of the results.

Exact dynamics of quantum correlations of two qubits coupled to bosonic baths

Chen Wang, Qing-Hu Chen

Dynamics of the quantum entanglement and quantum discord of two qubits in two independent baths and a common bath with the Lorentzian spectrum are studied exactly in the numerical sense within the hierarchy approach. The effects of the counter-rotating-wave terms from the system–bath coherence on these quantum correlations are systematically discussed and comparisons with previous ones under the rotating-wave approximation are also performed. For two independent baths, beyond the weak system–bath coupling, the counter-rotating-wave terms essentially change evolutions of both the entanglement and quantum discord. With increase of the coupling, revival of the entanglement after a period of complete disentanglement is suppressed dramatically and finally disappears, and the quantum discord becomes smaller monotonically. For the common bath, the entanglement is also suppressed by the counter-rotating-wave terms, but the quantum discord shows quite different behaviors if initiated from spin-correlated states. In the non-Markovian regime, the quantum discord is almost not influenced by the counter-rotating-wave terms and is generally finite in the long-time evolution at arbitrary coupling while in the Markovian regime, it is significantly enhanced with the strong coupling.

Two-Qubit Spin-Boson Model in the Strong Coupling Regime: Coherence, Non-Markovianity, and Quantum Thermodynamics

Hasan Mehdi Rizvi, Devvrat Tiwari, Subhashish Banerjee

We investigate the dynamics of a two-qubit open quantum system, in particular the two-qubit spin-boson model in the strong coupling regime, coupled to two thermal bosonic baths under non-Markovian and non-equilibrium conditions. Two complementary approaches, the Hierarchical Equations of Motion (HEOM) and Reaction Coordinate Mapping (RCM), are employed to examine various coupling regimes between the qubits and their respective baths. The dynamical features of the model and the impact of the tunneling amplitude on quantum coherence of the system are probed using the $l_1$-norm of coherence. The model is further shown to have non-Markovian evolution. The nontrivial task of calculating entropy production in the strong-coupling regime is performed using auxiliary density operators in HEOM. Motivated by the realization of a quantum thermal device in the strong-coupling regime, the non-equilibrium steady-state behavior of the system is investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between the heat and spin currents and the tunneling amplitude is probed.

Crossover between non-Markovian and Markovian dynamics induced by a hierarchical environment

Tiantian Ma, Yusui Chen, Tian Chen +2 more

Non-Markovian evolution of an open quantum system can be induced by the memory effects of a reservoir. Although a reservoir with stronger memory effects may seem like it should cause stronger non-Markovian effects on the system of interest, this seemingly intuitive thinking may not always be correct. We illustrate this by investigating a qubit (a two-level atom) that is coupled to a hierarchical environment, which contains a single-mode cavity and a reservoir consisting of an infinite number of modes. We show how the non-Markovian character of the system is influenced by the coupling strength between the qubit and cavity and the correlation time of the reservoir. In particular, we found a phenomenon whereby the qubit Markovian and non-Markovian transition exhibits a anomalous pattern in a parameter space depicted by the coupling strength and the correlation time of the reservoir.

Non-Markovian dynamics of the mixed-state geometric phase of dissipative qubits

Wei Guo, Jian Ma, Xiaolei Yin +2 more

We investigate the geometric phase of a two-level atom (qubit) coupled to a bosonic reservoir with Lorentzian spectral density and find that for the non-Markovian dynamics in which the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is performed, the geometric phase has a $\ensuremath{\pi}$-phase jump at the nodal point. However, the exact result without the RWA given by the hierarchical equations of motion method shows that there is no such phase jump or nodal structure in the geometric phase. Thus our results demonstrate that the counterrotating terms significantly contribute to the geometric phase in the multimode Hamiltonian under certain circumstances.
